I'd like to see Newt challenge Obama to a boxing match.

2012-04-01 03:00:33 PM
This entertaining (and surprisingly brutal) fight was broadcast on SunTV (new window). The best part about this was Ezra Levant crowing all week (and through this match) about how the namby-pamby liberal was going to get his clock cleaned. Listening to him having to act magnanimous about the whole thing in the post-fight interview (14:00 or so) was awesome.

I feel kinda bad for Brazeau, an Algonquin, having to cut his hair as part of the bet- that's a pretty significant warrior shaming. But if he didn't want to cut his hair, maybe he should have talked less and trained more.

And if you don't care about Canadian politics, left vs right, or boxing, there's a boob-shot bonus at 13:24.

I love that Trudeau actually comes out and says "it really chews you up inside, doesn't it?"

Also: thanks for the boob tip, unyon!

It would probably look more like a professional wrestling match, with Newt being the chickenshiat heel, and it ends with Obama hulking up.

Sounds like Brazeau was expecting to put Trudeau away quickly and got gassed. Oh well good on both of them for raising money for charity and showing that politicians can be human!

fta: A well-heeled audience arrived at Ottawa's Hampton Inn early, decked out as fight crowds tend to be, with many men in power suits and tuxedos and women in skin-tight sheaths, high heels and miniskirts.

We *are* a deeply silly people.

That said, nice jerb, Justin. Beatin' up a conservative against 3-1 odds?

Just cos he had martial arts experience and was a reservist?

Meh, Brazeau didn't stand a chance against the legendary Trudeau footwork.

It's not even pseudo anymore, alas. I mean, we got an official-sounding phone call at our house, on election day, telling us to go to the wrong polling place. That's straight up Rove Doctrine, the only element missing is that we're not a black family.

Well the good news about some of their more blatant dumbassery lately is that I'm finally making progress with all the people (my mom in particular) who didn't believe me for years when I tried to convince them that Harper wants to be a Republican when he grows up.

I went to U of C at the same time as him. He was stabbiness inducing even then, but he was just so....grating...I never actually thought at the time that anyone would ever take him seriously. I don't think he'd go to Fox; I think he'd rather be the big fish in the little pond at SunTV rather than risk losing credibility if Fox's viewers didn't take him seriously because he's a Canuck. I could see him ending up with a Koch brothers think-tank though, since they have interests in Canada (like owning a crude terminal at this end of Keystone) and in college he did a summer internship arranged by the Charles G. Koch Foundation.

The best part of this is that Brazeau is going to have to wear a Liberal jersey. (Best part because the Liberals have jerseys?! Wha? Can I get one with WLM KING on the back?)

Actually, the best part of this is that Justin Trudeau a) scored the first Liberal victory since 2006 b) has better tattoos. LI-BER-AL LI-BER-AL

I would love to see Justin Trudeau beat down Conservative senators regularly until 2015, at which point, one hopes, the LPC will beat down the Conservatives electorally. I am ready to give the Liberal Party tens of dollars to see more beatings, but then again, it's probably best for Trudeau to retire at the top of his game.

Your first mistake was watching SunTV! Life without paying attention to Ezra, ever, is so blissful and then you aren't padding their ratings into the possible hundreds of viewers.

Your second mistake was not watching the whole fight broadcast in French because the commentary is pretty awesome. If your French isn't that great just the tone of their voices is probably enough.

In my dreams, Trudeau cold-cocks Ezra in that interview with the same left jab that put down Brazeau. Anyone that doubts Levant's douchebaggery can just look at that clip. It's exhibit 'A'.

I was in student government at MRC at the same time he was on the council at UofC. I had run ins with him at various conferences and events. I'm not sure whether he or Rob Anders is the bigger douchebag of that cohort, but I'm willing to concede Ezra the crown.

They'll need to merge with the NDP for that to happen. The Liberal "brand" has been tainted, but if they were to align with the NDP, moving the NDP closer to center-left, then they'll have the next election in a bag. Merging worked for the PCs when Reform started eating up the votes on the right, and with the left split between NDP and the grits, the cons are going to have a chokehold until the libs back down and accept defeat.

That reminds me of the Carlos Condit vs. Dan Hardy match, where they both landed a left hook at the same time. Condit's landed a fraction of a second earlier and dropped Hardy. It's cool to see politicians having some fun though, and for a good cause at that.

The problem with that is that it means that the only way to beat the right is to move to the right. I pay close enough to the ever-rightward-shifting 2 party system south of the border to think that following in their footsteps is a terrible idea.

Wild Rose is gaining ground quickly in Alberta. I'd rather see them go national and split the right.

There's no disconnect between the WR & federal Conservatives. That's got the same odds of happening as the NDP selling their souls to the Liberals.

Although with the right amount of LSD added to the butter tarts served at the next NDP national convention, nothing is impossible.

Serial: The Liberal "brand" has been tainted, but if they were to align with the NDP, moving the NDP closer to center-left, then they'll have the next election in a bag.

The NDP brand is tainted for some of us as well. I lived through them in government in BC, when they had just as many scandals, and I have doubts about the NDP's ability to govern at the federal level, particularly about the depth of experience they can draw on. I'll probably still vote for them provincially, but that's because I truly don't have a centrist option.

We'll see how things work out. I'm unwilling to let go of a party that's older than Confederation itself after just a few bad years. I also don't think it's necessary for the Liberal Party to move to the left; I think they would be abandoning a large chunk of the electorate if that happened. And I don't think the NDP base considers it acceptable to join with the Liberal Party on anything. There would have to be a much more significant attitude adjustment from the NDP about moving to the centre, and they won't want to be the mouse that turns into one of the cats. Additionally, the election of Thomas Mulcair is a sign they don't want to get serious about any kind of coordinated attempt to take down the Tories, merger, or anything else. Mulcair ran against that. The NDP wants to run the Liberal Party out of town, as they always have. For me, that shows that their priorities are all wrong both as the Official Opposition and as a group of people with a hope of running the country.

That's not to say that the Liberals have had their heads on straight recently, either. Michael Ignatieff was one of the worst calls in their history, completely tone-deaf to the Canadian electorate. I think even keeping Stéphane Dion on board as leader would have stanched some of the bloodletting that happened in '11. However, I can see a path to victory for some kind of Liberal-NDP minority coalition in '15 if the Liberals play their cards right.

Wrong. The CPC are doing everything they can to implement fully republican style conservatism and when they don,t succeed it's not because they magically about-face on their own political philosophy, it's always because either the opposition blocks them or the Canadian public won't let them because Canadians are not as far right as the CPC.
