Why can't we just be naked in public? Why do we need a LAW to say we can't be naked? I don't care what my neighbor looks like. Why should he care about me?

Unfortunately, we've been taught that every instance of nudity must have something to do with sex, and we've also been taught that sex should only occur between ourselves and people who meet specific criteria of beauty. Ergo, we believe that we should only see people naked who meet specific criteria of beauty, because of the implied sexuality of it.

It's a complete load of crap that we've been fed our entire lives, but most people lack the desire to do anything about it.

You're right. The list of things I choose not to care about is almost as long as the list of things available to care about -- nudism is one of those things I don't give a fark about.

Gaylord Q. Tinkledink: Because you're ugly and nobody wants to see you naked?

Thanks, Gaylord, for missing the point (FWIW I have a fairly attractive face but a very hair body). Nobody should care. Nobody needs a law for this. We are overlegislated to the point of absurdity. People routinely ignore the information that surrounds them. Nudity should not bother anyone.

Curious: "It's not the nudists who are really the problem but the people who go and watch them from the trees."

Absolutely wrong. Absolutely wrong! I hate this point of view! You want to protect me from some nonexistent stranger??? Here's the thing: while we don't care who sees us, we aren't putting ourselves on display! We just want to be nude. That's all. Most of us are home-nudists not out of fear or embarrassment or shame, but because cads who can't handle life insist we be controlled.

Christ, you're making me sound like a Tea Partier. I'm gonna go be naked in my own house. The first thing I do when I get home is I furiously take off my clothes. I wish I could be nude with my friends and with my coworkers but I know that due to societal norms it is impossible. Do you know what it's like to live in secret? I'll tell you what: it sucks. It hurts. You can't even share this kind of thing casually because the people you know might vehemently disagree, and a private nudist made public in a world where it's taboo somehow becomes a pervert.

If you actually seek to reduce nudity, I have only one thing to say to you: sincerely fark you.

There is actually a movement to get a younger generation into nudism. There is a very successful and growing group in Florida called Florida Young Naturists (their website is not safe for prudes, but otherwise a great source of information with a view of what they do). They are about to have their 4th Annual Summer gathering with about 250 folks between 18-30. And no, it's not sexual and it's not all guys, it's about 50/50 male/female and it's a great time.

The venues (resorts / beaches ) in America and Europe that I've been to don't fit the stereotype perpetuated in this thread either. The average age overall is probably about 40 with most every age represented.

Give it a try sometime. You know you want to.

Almost cool story time.

2001 I was in Germany on business for two months, staying at the Hilton. Being a big fan of saunas and having lived in Finland, I made extensive use of the co-ed clothing optional sauna in the hotel's fitness center. Of course, I left my clothes in my locker. One day I was in there and there happened to be two other Americans in there. At one point the door opened and I looked up and saw this drop dead gorgeous (natural!) blonde with huge tits walk in. I took a quick look and then focused my attention elsewhere. A few minutes later she starts yelling at the two Americans in German, then in English, calling them perverts and other less polite names. They ran out of their with their tails between their legs. The woman takes a few minutes to calms down and then says something to me in German. I apologized and told her that I did not speak German. She was astonished and asked, "You are an American? But you do not act like one!" We then spent the next ten minutes or so talking. I had to leave as I had been in there much longer than she had, but we had agreed to meet for coffee a short while later at the cafe in the lobby. While we were having coffee there were two big bruisers hovering around our area, obviously there to keep other people away. Sadly, coffee with her was very short, only about 15 minutes, and then she was on her way as she was checking out and had to go. After she left one of the bell hops came over and asked if I knew who she was. When I said, "No," he told me she was some famous German porn star! Fortunately I did get her e-mail address. Unfortunately, nothing ever came from it as I was not in Germany much longer and somewhere along the way I lost that address.

I'm very curious. I get that being naked is a natural state for you, so wearing clothes is more then inhibiting. But what about during the winter months? would you still feel like walking around nude outside while it's very cold? I'm not trolling, I'm really curious. I understand due to exposure to the elements you wouldn't but is the urge just a strong knowing how unfriendly the temperature is outside?

We're nudists, not stupid.

Clothing is for protection from the elements. Puritans, among others, added reasons for it to be worn for "modesty" etc.

Think of it this way. If you are out doing yard work in the summer, it doesn't make sense to wear a sweaty, sticky shirt and pants, so nude would be more comfortable and practical and reasonable given the weather.

If it's snowing humans need the added warmth of clothing. That is it's only function for nudists. It's a practical thing.

Oh, I wasn't offended. The first line of my response was meant to be tongue in cheek.

I wrote a few papers in college relating to the psychology of nudism as far as body acceptance is concerned (kids raised as nudists have virtually zero chance of becoming bulimic or anorexic and rate their satisfaction with their body much higher than non-nudist youth, regardless of their size, shape etc.).

As for what you're interested in I haven't really seen or done any research, but I may be able to provide some insight from experience. What specifically are you interested in psychologically speaking? Just the desire to not wear clothes itself?

Most nudist are not people that most would want to see nude, that said... Every beach should be a nudist beach. Nudity really should be allowed just about everywhere. Its not about "being seen" anyways. Its about shedding clothing if you want. Clothing is nothing more than an artificial way to protect ourselves from the elements and thus to keep warm. The "morality" aspect of it is total useless nonsense.

It's more than past time that all the "morality" laws died. The only rules we need are those that benefit society in a tangible way. We need laws to protect us from the harmful actions of others, and protect others from our harmful actions, and nothing else. Nudity does not pass this test.

But what about the children? Won't somebody think about the children?!

They will be just fine. Seeing a naked person will in no way harm them. The naked body is our natural state, and absolutely no benefit comes from shielding the children of this basic truth and knowledge of the human body. The only other requirement is your basic parenting to explain these things to curious young minds. I think far more mental harm comes from us being raised to view our bodies as something "filthy" and "shameful."
