Tiffany Aching would have won the Hunger Games in three days and saved all the other kids at the same time, somehow.

I don't know about Mirror Mirror, but the advertising in the theatre of Julia Roberts' co-star looks just like Audrey Hepburn.

Looks like Hunger Games is the next Matrix in terms of pseudo-intellectual babble and terrible first-year-college-kid-at-Denny's rambling philosophical analysis. I really want to read articles written by people who walked past a Joseph Campbell book at the book store once. It really turns me on.

Can't wait to read about the first college course that compares and contrasts the the Matrix and Hunger Games FOR THE WIN.

Here's the problems I see with Mirror Mirror:-

1. The "twisting a fairy tale" has been done to death. Shrek, Tangled, Enchanted. No-one wants to see another one.

2. Julia Roberts is a shiatty actress with no range. Works for romantic leads, doesn't work for character supporting roles. Should have picked: Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham-Carter, Sophie Marceau, Jennifer Connelly.

/incidentally, if you've not seen Enchanted, it's a good, affectionate send-up of the fairy tale genre and utterly charming.

I saw the trailers for Mirror Mirror and Snow White & The Huntsman back to back knowing that Tarsem directed one of them. Imagine my shock when the movie with the crazy visuals and extravagant sets WASN'T the Tarsem one.

Exactly. I think both films promise to be pretty bad, but at least Snow White and the Huntsman looks intriguing. That's what I'm used to from Singh - awesome visuals, mediocre movie. But Mirror, Mirror holds back on the eye candy and comes off as.....

Joseph Campbell is so 20th century. THE MATRIX HAS CRAZY FUTURISTIC FIGHTS AND BULLET TIME EFFECTS! ALSO I LOVE SHAKY CAM EFFECTS AND KID FRIENDLY REMAKES OF BATTLE ROYALE! Campbell just had a strange infatuation with the word "bliss". Whatever that means. BOOORRRIIIINNGGG!

When a trailer uses a "Say hello to my little friend" joke as the stinger, it can't be good.

That, and "Snow White." "Snow Who?" "Snow Way!"

/Also, why does Lily Collins have a near case of Unabrow?

If they somehow worked out a way to put Edward Cullen, Harry Potter and whoever the actors are of the shows that are currently popular on the Nickelodeon and Disney channels into Hunger Games, there would be a global tween orgasmapalooza.

And aside from the Nickelodeon and Disney channel award shows, none of it would ever be mentioned again.

I got dragged to The Hunger Games and as it turns out, it was actually pretty good.

The loudest people I know who hate it claim that it was a ripoff of Battle Royale. Those people are very much like my ex. They plaster the back of their cars with bumper stickers of bands no one's heard of and live for someone to ask them what their favorite band is so they can start they're answer with "Well right now I'm into "...and then go into "Pazuzu Monkey Fecal Amino Acid".

It could have used a little more violence but obviously they were constrained by the PG-13 rating so that's not a fault of the film.

Mirror, Mirror looks like something I'd be forced to take my niece and a flask of vodka to.

Because this just proves that if you didn't like THG, you don't deserve to be a critic and should just die.

Yes. The amount of money a movie makes always proves how good it is.

That's how you know Twilight movies are amongst the best of all time. That's how you know Star Wars Ep. 1 with Jar Jar binks was a better movie than Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Graduate, The Godfather, Mary Poppins, Ghost Buster, The Dark Knight and Goldfinger, to name a few.

+1.

I broke down and read the book because the e-book was available for free for Amazon Prime subscribers.

All it's meant to be is a teenage romance/coming aware of sexuality novel with an action plot. The romance/love triangle is painfully heavy handed and contrived, and the dystopian vision of the future is thoroughly unoriginal. I bet Susan Collins even secretly concedes that it's a supermarket checkout paperback.

Mugato: The loudest people I know who hate it claim that it was a ripoff of Battle Royale.

What're you talking about? Being a ripoff of Battle Royale is what makes it good. In fact, since it's fundamentally an action movie, they gloss over some of the annoying tween romance stuff from the book and thus make it better than the novels.

2012-04-01 05:28:15 PM
I saw "The Raid: Redemption" and it is a good martial arts flick. It is non-stop action and I couldn't believe how many action scenes this movie has. I've never seen the lead actor in any other films but he is bad ass.

Cormac McCarthy, Jonathan Franzen, Jeffrey Eugenides, Michael Chabon, and Colson Whitehead are all American authors alive and writing new novels. What kind of nice things are you looking for?

thornhill: The romance/love triangle is painfully heavy handed and contrived

**spoilers**

Did you actually read the first book? There's no love triangle at all. She knows that in order to get help she has to play up a relationship with Peeta when all she really wants is to kill them all and go home. The "Romance" is second fiddle to what is actually happening. As for Gale, he's seen in the first chapter and mentioned once or twice, but never as a love interest as she's worried about her family and getting out of the games alive. It's only in the last chapter that she realizes that she may actually care about Peeta, only to crush him when she admits it was all a ploy to get help. As for Gale, she thinks that maybe he might have a thing for her at the end of the book, but with everything going on, that has to take a back burner to whatever the president has planned for her.

I've only read the book. Throughout it she's clearly feels some conflict for her feelings about Gale while having to pretend to be madly in-love with Peeta, and in the last third of the novel she's not sure if she's in-love with Peeta or not.

But the triangle dynamic is supposed to be light -- she's just becoming aware of her sexuality and when she kisses Peeta that's the first time she's kissed a boy.

And that's my point about it being a book aimed specifically at teenage girls. The intended reader is 12 years-old, so the sexual tension is purposely downplayed.

Agreed. Sure, it was derivative of at least 3 other stories, but it wasn't as bad as everyone says.
However, I don't get why this flick is a very big hit, but Darabont couldn't get "The Long Walk" off the ground after 15 years.

You can make fun of me for this, but the costumes for Mirror, Mirror looked so hideous that those alone were enough to keep me out of the theater. Seriously the Snow White dress was so fugly it made Lady Gaga's outfits look attractive. It looked like a sub-par, cheesy, made for tv-production by one of the lesser channels.

While I did liked the movie (I'll be honest, I haven't read the books, but they come hihgly recommended from a friend), I don't think the premise is that deep as it presumes it is. While the idea of a distopian world in which gladiatorial games are used as means of intimidation is appealing, I have a few questions, mainly which: Where's there rest of the world involved? Are they isolated from other nations or are they the only ones left?.

Either way, I might give it a read, but it's on the end line of The War of the Worlds, and A Song of Ice and Fire saga.

saw hunger games last night. jesus christ, what a horrible flick. i might have tolerated it if they'd trimmed off an hour or so, but it just went on and on... so many redundant scenes that didn't contribute to any further development of the shallow characters... stayed to watch all of the credits, as i often do... it's amazing how so much hard work of so many people can still just disappoint viewers...

Want to get together and over think some other children's lit? I hear that "There's A Monster At The End of the Book" is ripe for nitpicking. I'll hungrily devour your cock in the cab of my pickup truck if you'll slob my knob afterwards.
