It's sort of mentioned in the article, but I'm part of the "hey, we can move a 340 ton rock a helluva long way in one night if we feel like it, isn't that cool" crowd.

According to the author, it's "Mr. Christo". Which is further proof that the author is an idiot.

Although perhaps his best film, it most certainly led to a mighty decline.

"Perhaps most importantly it reflects a growing incapacity of many Americans to distinguish between events which are appropriate occasions for reaffirming social bonds and experiencing exhilaration and those which are meaningless and wasteful spectacles."

How many reaffirming social bond moments does a country have that does not exclude or piss off some segment of the populace? This one sounds like it's close. Let it go, man. So it's not your thing. We get it. Your article is trying to manufacture outrage against a rock. Not an idea or principle. A rock. That is a bigger sign of western decline, that everything is a bitter debate, rather than people looking at engineering and community involvement for the sake of art.

For the record, I don't get it either but it made a huge group of people happy, or at least interested. It's not my place to take that from them.

I would say the rock is less of a symptom and more a cause. At least in so much as it inspired this aimless, frustrated, desperate blame-fountain a blog.

I'm commenting on the absurdity of a point of view in which somebody could actually claim that video games are not art, considering the other things (including a giant rock) that our society considers art.

And that's OK, I think you're an idiot too.

This same site that salivates at thoughts of war with Iran that would cost billions (maybe low trillion) is biatching because a bunch of rich people bought a very large rock? If we're going to waste our money on something why not just move giant rocks? At least that won't make us less safe.
