And why did Fringe match Grimm?

Because Grimm hit series low ratings. (new window)

I did not watch the last episode yet (will in a couple of minutes) but I have to say this:

I would rather they wrap up Fringe this year rather than keep it up for a new season. They lost A LOT of steam this season. The end of Season 2 and all of Season 3 were all absolutely incredible and minblowing, but so far its been underwhelming and it really feels like they don't know where it's going.

End it now, please.

Gotta be honest, I have really liked the last however many episodes of Fringe, including last nights. The show really turned a corner once Olivia started getting 'her' memories back. The show stupidly, stupidly, stupidly thought it would be a good idea to spend half the farking season not having our character interact in ways they have developed to react - you know, the heart of the show.

Now we're sort of back to normal, but in a weird way. I really like it. Not sure it was worth the first half of the season, though.

Yeah that's the thing.

I haven't watched tonight's episode, but I have to agree with your assessment 100%. At least now we know it's not Universe C and D, but rather a makeover of universes A and B.

Still, that was a farking long time for nothing. The only episode so far this season that equaled the last two seasons for me was the very Twin Peak-esque episodes with the town where people were going crazy, and was caught in a bubble. That was outstanding.

The rest was good to passable at most.

I thought the episode with Steven Root was pretty excellent as well, one of their best sci-fi standalone premises which reminded me a lot of White Tulip.

Well I think they have an ending for this plotline but it's probably not 2 hours worth of material and they're just doing the freak of the week filler to stretch it out.

I don't care how good ratings are; when you're dealing with FOX, quality programming is always in severe danger of being unjustly canceled.

Fox gets a really bad wrap. They may cancel some shows too early, but at least they give them a shot. The other networks don't even try to put weird stuff on the air.

They clearly do, since they renewed Fringe for a fourth season. Do you really think they don't look at Friday shows relative to other Friday shows? Networks are dumb, they aren't THAT dumb.

sorry, but Grimm is shiat. Fringe is a much better show.

2012-03-31 08:25:18 PM
Grimm probably hit season lows because people forgot that there was going to be a new episode last night.

People probably forgot that Grimm was on because NBC has been starting and stopping and dribling out the new episodes since January.

NBC probably has been starting and stopping Grimm because they are continuing to suffer from carnial-rectal translocation.

Seriously NBC, let the program run for awhile so that people who are going to watch can get into the habit. You can't make something "must see tv" just because you say so. Let the people get familiar with the show.

Grimm is pretty much the only thing I watch on NBC these days. Aside from the Office/P&R

Well, I never want to be the threadshiatter so I'll just say I hope you guys get as many more episodes of this show as you want to see.

Maybe I'll give it another go sometime, providing I don't hear it wound up pulling a lost.

All the principles said they want a 15 episode season 5 to wrap it up. If it ends with this season we won't get any real closure.

Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired: sorry, but Grimm is shiat. Fringe is a much better show.

With Hulu, I watch both. Fringe is the better show, but Grimm is like chewing gum for the mind. Not real deep, but I like the flavor. Doesn't take itself too seriously. Has a good time with the characters. Neat premise. I'm interested in seeing how it plays out.

That's part of the thing: with services like Hulu or DVR, you don't have to choose. The industry still hasn't really adjusted to this. Shows aren't necessarily in competition with one another anymore. You can have your cake and eat it too. The ratings system hasn't really adjusted to this model yet, and more's the pity.

2012-03-31 09:09:56 PM
For some reason this reminded me of Dark Angel. The two shows have nothing to do with each other, but the Fox thing, cancelling shows. It's really just too bad that they gave Dark Angel two whole seasons, when Firefly didn't even really get one whole season. Anyways, the first season of Dark Angel wasn't bad, but that second season, I can see why it got cancelled, that shiat was beyond awful. At least Michael Weatherly found a new, much, much, much better gig.

As for Fringe, it's had a longer run than most good shows on Fox, if it ends after this season, oh well. Oh, a question for those who watch Lost Girl: Why does Dyson never actually ride that motorcycle he keeps in his home? He treats the damn thing like furniture. It's almost as bad as that one guy on The Unit who always wore Triumph t-shirts, but never rode a motorcycle.

You don't cancel a show that Leonard Nimoy appeared on. NBC gave up after buying 80 episodes of Star Trek and missed out on getting a piece of the 625 subsequent productions in that franchise.

2012-03-31 09:26:47 PM
The last 2 episodes were horrible & went nowhere. I like the series, but these last 6 or so episodes have boring cases, and 10 minutes of personal drama at the end.

Yes they do keep track of +7 ratings for DVRs but for some reason advertisers are less interested in how many people DVR shows and fast forward through commercials.

2012-03-31 10:11:54 PM
Ratings "matter" because they show how many people are being forced to watch the commercials. Hence, DVR numbers count for very, very little compared to live ratings.

Tell me about it.

On the topic of Fringe...anyone else notice a pattern (hah! I said pattern) with this show? It seems like each new season sucks at first, then picks up steam, and is awesome by the end of it. Remember season 2? Remember the first six episodes? When Olivia was all crippled and the religious FBI agent who shall never be spoken of again came and left suddenly? Yeah, that kind of sucked. But by the end of season 2, it was like "This is the best show evah!"

Season 4 is having that effect on me. The return of the porcupine mutants and the Mystery Ship of Mutanty Badness have me praying for a season 5. Which will suck at first, but then get awesome?

Season 3 is the opposite. The first half of season 3 was, IMO, absolutely fantastic TV, and it sort of lost the plot after that.

At this point, I'm watching purely out of obligation. The show's barely holding my interest at this point, and the flying porcupines aren't helping. They really dropped the ball after the climactic end of last season. Had they picked up where they left off, with the two universes having to work together to save both, that could have made for a great season. After building all that mythology, it's a real let-down for them to go back to monster of the week with a mythology coda most weeks.

Are they unaware that even when watching "live" you can still FF through commercials if you simply pause the playback at some point? Or does the simple act of hitting FF disqualify you as a "live" viewer? Genuinely curious.

So...haven't watched the show in several years I think. Stopped sometime during the big 'We're crossing universes now' story arc season finale. It just wasn't interesting to me any more. I enjoyed the schlocky X-files aspect more than the running storyline about Walter and the magical Mcguffin-child.

Is it worth it for me to pick the series up where I left off, or did they drop the aspects I like entirely?
