St. Louis FBI looking for information on three small planes

11/12/2001 05:20 AM

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- The FBI is looking for information on the owners of three small model planes that were reported to have dropped gray smoke over boats on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers.

In a release, the FBI said Sunday that tugboat workers reported three small aircraft flying about 30 feet from the boats. One plane reportedly dropped what appeared to be gray smoke on some of the boats, the release said.

According to the FBI, the planes appeared to be one-person ``kit'' airplanes. Two of them were described as white with black markings, and the third was either red or orange. The reports came from areas of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers near Cairo, Ill., and Crystal City, Mo.

Crystal City is about 30 miles south of St. Louis, and Cairo is about 100 miles farther south.

U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Josh McTaggert said the FBI did not find any suspicious material on the boats.

``It was determined that there was no residue to be found on the tugboats whatsoever,'' McTaggert said. ``The boats have been released, and there's no injuries, no nothing.''

I love this. Americans are saying how strong they are, and that no one will break your resolve, but you're all paranoid as hell. The terrorists did win, most Americans are to blind to see it.

Paranoid doesn't necessarily equal weak.

My money says that the Taliban will take credit for this. They said they downed our helicopter when they found a wheel, right?

Looks like they have the black box. Wheee!

Turned on the tube this morning and it was on every news station, constantly, all day long. If there was another news story, it was buried. That's with a plane crash that is ostensibly an accident. Too good to be true.

A black box - the digital flight data recorder. Cockpit voice recorder still in there somewhere.

I just said "Cock".

For some reason, ABC was showing "The View" this morning. I guess those hair-coloring tips were more important.

BlessedRubicant

What the hell are you talking about? Paranoid and on edge, hell yeah we are. Why shouldn't we be? We are at war! Are we backing down? Hell no! Also along with Americans being paranoid and on edge I'd like to ad we are also being brave and courageous.

And on a more juvenile level, GO FARK YOUSELF!!

Bongoman: If you are gonna get incinerated in a plane crash, you'd better make sure you are looking your best or you won't get into heaven. Just ask Jack Chick. The View, as always was doing a public service.

anyone know a back door for msnbc?

Who dug up that feggucking crop duster tale again. It showed up in the news shortly after CNN started screaming the word "ANTHRAX!", then it was debunked. If the dateline on the article was correct, it looks like it's back.

If it was a bomb, it will be easy for them to detect the telltale residue.

Hey BlessedRubicant... strong doesn't mean smart or non-panicky. That's humans in a nutshell... dumb panicky animals (what movie is that from?!?).

And, I for one was thrilled they put The View on. I was NOT thrilled when they went right back to news. I get really irritated when they repeat the same two expert speculations over and over again then give us 20 conflicting eyewitness accounts then tell us how eyewitness accounts rarely match up then give us the same two speculations then give us another 20 accounts.... You can see where it's going. And when you have 10+ channels ALL doing the SAME thing I begin to fear for my sanity. When they do that kind of continuous reporting they end up doing a lot of things besides just reporting. They spread a lot of incorrect conjecture and call it fact until it's proven wrong (ie mixing up the types of planes). Not to mention then burying the NEW news in the old conjecture so that any one like me who gets fed up ends up missing it. This crash happened at about 9:30+ this morning. Four hours later they were STILL reporting the SAME 2 conjectures with nothing more in the way of information than they had three hours previous. Can you tell me that's not driving a story into the ground? I'd love to see a normal everyday person manage to talk about this for 4 hours straight and not lose interest.

I'm not saying they shouldn't report it. But really. Do they have to drive a story into the GROUND?!? Isn't that CNN's job?

thank you for the link, it was appreciated much by a friend who lives on 119 and Rockaway. His family is safe (thank goodness) but it was kind of scary even up here in Northern NY.

whoever said it had a "shiat load of fuel" is silly.

a) true, the dominican republic is as far as la to ny, but that's not as much as it would be carrying if it was going to europe

b) IF IT WAS HIJACKED BY SOMEBODY TRYING TO HURT SOMETHING, THEY WOULD CRASH IT INTO SOMETHING IMPORTANT - NOT A FARKING HOUSE!

Rainewalker: Try listening to NPR! During the market report a couple of days ago (at least where I live) the following "... and now we have proved that we can get 5 minutes 40 seconds into a news cast without mentioning terrorism or anthrax." For the next half hour they used those two words as much as they could. It was hillarious.

Anyone else notice there were no ads on that cnn page?

Felgraf: That's pretty funny. It's kind of like the "Clinton-free" zones some of the radio stations in Seattle were becoming during the BJ-scandle. Ah, how I miss Seattle....
