Hey guys...

Anyone mention Rush?

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame should be burned to the ground and the ashes dumped in the middle of the ocean. I can think of nothing more un-rock and roll than a rock and roll hall of fame.

Herehere! Also, is faith no more in the HOF? Cause, if not, they should be.

My husband and I have our own bands we would like to see in the HOF:

Me: Journey
Him: The Go-Go's

That being said:

The Cars - THIS

While there are several bands I would add to such a list (and most have already been mentioned)... I was pleasantly surprised by the five that were mentioned in TFA. I agree with all of them, enthusiastically.

Serious Black: Apart from the obvious omission of Rush, how the hell has KISS been kept out after 11 years of eligibility?

Because they suck?

2012-03-30 01:49:48 PM
The Jann Wenner Club (it is NOT the HoF to me) is an absolute joke. I think being excluded from it now is a badge of honor.

2012-03-30 01:50:01 PM

El Freak: factoryconnection: I agree with Wenner's snobbery on this front; KISS is almost exclusively a novelty act. They have so few songs that show any significant musicianship, I'm not sure that without the schtick they would have ever gone anywhere. They're an unrehearsed version of Thin Lizzy, musically. They didn't represent a new movement (like the Sex Pistols) nor have they improved with age.

They also got a hell of a lot of kids, including, most likely, some bands you listen to, to pick up instruments. They deserve some recognition just for that alone.

While that's true, I think most of the bands who would cite them as an influence cite them as one of a bigger batch of bands, including most of the popular rock bands of that era (Zep, Sabbath). Pretty much any of those bands that did a KISS cover simply aped their schtick, (Case in point: Nirvana's truly awful cover of "Do You Love Me", which itself is a truly awful song.)

KISS's entire career is basically that of a boy-band, except that their audience was pre-teen and teenage boys. Their musicianship is sub-par, their songs aren't particularly noteworthy, and their best album is essentially a compilation of their first few albums played "live".

However, they are a masterful live act. That's why they are/were so popular.

It's essentially WWE. Boys idolized KISS because they (Gene Simmons in particular) looked farking badass on stage.

Is being a masterful live act enough to get you in the HOF? Possibly, but that's a less clear path. If they had JUST been a live act, I think they'd have been in by now. (The HOF has inducted quite a few "performers".)

The biggest strike against them, and arguably the main reason they've been held out, is because of the marketing. For Gene, KISS is a profit machine. He/they will do anything and everything to make a dime. That's anathema to anyone who takes music as an art form.

Plus, the HOF knows full-well that if they induct KISS during Gene's lifetime, he'll turn the entire ceremony into a ridiculous circus. They'll overshadow all of the other recipients.

Personally, I think KISS will get in, but it'll be years from now.

Do you think, if Willie were to be inducted, he would even show up? He's more rock and/or roll/punk than most of the bands in the Hall, and just about anyone playing "punk rock" these days...

Another Government Employee: Jeff Lynne/ELO? Nothing Queen didn't do better.

I adore Queen and all but, really? Did you miss the part about Lynne not only producing Harrison's comeback album, but also producing Tom Petty'shiat album, helping form another successful band AND helping produce (technically speaking) the last two songs ever done by The Beatles?*

Again, I love Queen but did Brian May (or any of the other existing members) do anything remotely close to what Lynne's accomplished?

* -- really, really biased here. Only because I'd rather think of "Free Love" and "Free as a Bird" as fitting closure for a legendary band rather than "The Long and Winding Road."

Side two of Kate Bush's 'Hounds Of Love' is a masterpiece!

Those of you whom are asking "Who?" should really seek out Kate's work. 'Ariel' is also excellent but should have been pared down to one disc.

The Cars are deserving too.

The Hall of Fame needs more fan input. Every year the fans should be able to vote in one act. Nominees would be all acts who have been eligible for at least seven years and not inducted yet. Rock and roll would be nothing without the fans, and their voices need to be heard. Jann Wenner is not the arbiter of what rock and roll is, or of what bands deserve recognition.

Angry Drunk Bureaucrat: The author chose Jethro Tull over Rush, apparently.

The author chose to ignore the blatantly obvious. Saying, "The RnRHoF snubbed Rush" is like saying "Grass is Green." Everyone knows it and there's nothing to be gained from pointing it out for the hundred billionth time.

Really? You give us this list but leave out the greatest punk band of all time? That would be the Stiff Little Fingers. They may not have the sales numbers of Rush or Kiss or the Monkeys, but if the criteria is playing kick ass rock then these guys have to be in. Every decent Punk band covers them, and they had dozens of great songs. I'm also throwing in a vote for Joan Jett -- a chick who could rock with any of the boys and did it her way.

I'm glad to see the author put Jeff Lynne on that list. I don't know why he's complaining about Peter Gabriel since he was inducted as a member of Genesis(not saying he's not deserving of a solo induction as well, but he is in). I'm ticked to find out neither The Smiths, The Cure, or Joy Division aren't in (no I'm not goth and I don't wear black) I figure at least one of those bands should make it if nothing more than a representation of that era and style. But that's just my opinion. Which leads me to my boring preachy part.

Everybody sits around and argues about what is the greatest band/song/album etc... There's nothing wrong with that because it's just away of shooting the shiat and bonding with friends and all that good stuff. As has been mentioned above, the entire idea of a physical "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" is ridiculous. The only difference between that and friends talking about this over a few beers is that Jann Wenner convinced the city of Cleveland to fund a building for arguments to somehow give them legitimacy.

/also why is everybody so pissed of that Limbaugh hasn't been inducted? I know they have a few disc jockeys but that guy just talks.

El Brujo: Shez07: Before this thread gets filled with people I have never heard of... just wanted to leave these two names:

KISS

The Monkees

Continue proving your superior musical knowledge below

Not sure, but I don't believe fake bands qualify.

Know how I know you don't know jack about 1960s music? EVERYONE USED SESSION MUSICIANS IN THE 1960s. Also, The Monkees rebelled. Seriously, Mike Nesmith almost broke his damn hand, and put a hole in the wall right near Don Kirshner's (who is in the farking Hall of Fame, and he was just a goddamn producer) head, called him a motherfarker and told him it could have been his face. :)

Also, check out these lyrics by Micky Dolenz:

Ask your mommy and daddy, "What happened to the Indian?"
Ask your mommy and daddy to tell you where you really came from
Then mommy and daddy will probably turn and quickly walk away
Then ask your mommy and daddy who really killed J.F.K
Wa ta tick it ta too too...

Ask your mommy if she really gets off on all her - all her pills
Ask your Daddy, "Why doesn't that soldier care who he kills?"
After they've put you to sleep and tucked you safely down in your bed
Whisper Mommy and Daddy,
"Would it matter if the bullet went through my head?
If it was my blood spilling on the kitchen floor
If it was my blood, mommy, would you care a little more?"
Don't be surprised when they turn and start to cry
And tell your Mommy and Daddy, tell your mommy and daddy
Scream it to your mommy and daddy
They're living in a lie, a lie, a lie
It's all a lie, a lie, a lie
A lie, a lie...

Censored until 1996. Yea, that's right, the Monkees were censored. Also, you can't deny the influence the group had. They changed not only music (you can argue that they influenced the idea of commercialised, manufactured pop, they were far more open about their non-organic origins and the use of session musicians, and when you look at the diverse styles of the individual members, there's a lot of stuff to go through there, also, first pop/rock group to use synths on an album, and they sold more records than The Rolling Stones and the Beatles combined in 1967. Also, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and sometimes Young all met at one of Peter Tork's infamous parties, and arguably the fact that Hendrix toured with the Monkees, and quit had somewhat of an impact on his career), but they also had a major influence on television and film. You would have never had Easy Rider if there had never been the Monkees.

Also, they had no issues whatsoever tearing apart their own image, and eseentially committed career suicide, with the assistance of JACK NICHOLSON in their only feature film Head. Seriously, you have the execution of Nguyen Van show up like 20 times or more in the film. The TV show also slid a ton of shiat past the censors too.

Delawheredad: The Monkees as a band and Mike Nesmith as a solo artist. That is all.

This, so much this. Linda Ronstadt would have never had a career if it wasn't for a little song called "Different Drum," written by one Robert Michael Nesmith.

/Monkees fangirl, glad to see that farkers, and many others, are beginning to see that they weren't totally "a manufactured image, with no philosophies"

I'm a huge Rush fan, but if you're going to have a Hall of Fame for rock music, then

www.kinemagigz.com

and

abcdigmusic.net.au

belong in the HoF even before Rush.

No way should Genesis have gotten in before Crimson.

The excuse being offered is that both bands have had too many members to induct them--which guys do you induct? But it's a bullshiat excuse, as the induction of Genesis (three singers, three [or four] drummers, two guitarists, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks) also proves.

And if you're gonna have Miles Davis there, you also need these guys:

userserve-ak.last.fm

Agreed with all the others who mentioned Link Wray. Goddamn, the Hall is run by idiots.
