Very nicely composed and performed. It just goes to show that in competent hands even Michael Jackson's music can be made palatable.

Johnny Depp is in a band?

When did musicians with talent become "hipsterish"? In fact, "hipsterish" normal means popular without talent. The reason many groups like the Civil Wars are popular is because there is no adult pop music anymore. There is extremely shiatty techno-lite rap/hip-hop/whatever the f*ck, pop country which is really just easily listening songs from the 1980's at this point, and angry white boy "rock" that looks exactly like hair bands of the 1980's. The rise of bluegrass, classic county(no twang), and folk has more to do with a generation of kids that grew up listening to their parents old CSNY albums than it does anything else.

This was okay. A little slow for me, but it definitely didn't suck.

I can't find the video of it, but a million years ago, or so, I saw Tuck and Patti do a much more kick ass, upbeat, acoustic version of this song. If anyone can dig through the Googles to find it, you might really like it.

I came to mock... and it turns out to be pretty decent. Nice control on both of their voices, strong harmony, and no oversinging. Plus good simple guitar pluck/strum technique.

Well done.

I'm sorry. Thriller was a damn good album on its own.

Also, the chick singer seems to be channeling the not-yet-dead-soul of Stevie Nicks.

The husband is jealous of the wife. He winces when she sings.

Sorry folks ...I thought that was the most melodramatic hunk of garbage I have heard in a long long time. I hate it when singers cry lyrics out like they just learned their dog died. Cracking, cry baby, waa waa trash. Good god, it sucks.

/Quincy Jones and Thriller cannot be defeated.

WTF Indeed: When did musicians with talent become "hipsterish"?

When it started guaranteeing a green-light. A specific TFer is to blame, with a handle descriptive of what he studied in college while eating way too much.

Anyhow, I dig the Civil Wars. They're consistently good.

You shut your whore mouth.

Look at her hands, how they move around aimlessly, as if they were unattached. The singer has that disease, I forget the name, where you don't feel you're part of the universe.

2012-03-30 01:29:21 PM
Tholian disease, that's it.

Welp. They've heard of Chris Cornell.

They're not married (to each other). Joy is married, and expecting, I think, but I'm not sure if John is or not.

honest question....

why do singers who sing like this (pretty good actually) always look like they are trying to pass a baseball through their digestive system?

Why do you wave your hands while on the telephone?

Meh. They are talented, but wasn't blown away. I think the trendy unwashed hair/vintage clothes/melodramatic presentation of the dude gives it the hipster feel.

2012-03-30 02:30:57 PM
Oh for FARK's sake. They remind me of "Sausalito," that lounge band in "Lost In Translation." This is just more hipsters blowing themselves ironically.

Not a fan of The Civil Wars, but the chick from Phantogram is way hotter.

2012-03-30 03:18:16 PM
This is the best because it is the only hipster version that exists.

It didn't suck too badly, however that male singer is in desperate need of a haircut and a bath.

Not a fan of this. I don't mind some slow, contemporary sounding covers, but this was overly pretentious, and the woman's voiced bothered my ears. Her high notes were too harsh sounding for me.

When did "hipster" become a genre of music?

Something gave me a hint of Norah Jones there

Better than MJ anyday

I enjoy threads like this, if only for the people who chime in with 'such-and-such is similar/much better'. I always find new stuff to add to my list.

Indeed it was. That's one of those records where, if you strip back the glossy pop sheen, reveals itself to be an incredibly well-written batch o' tunes. You can take many of the songs on that record, interpret them a dozen different ways, and they'll remain strong. It's a trick few can pull off, and it's a sign of a well-written song.

Yes! Also book threads... I often get several months' worth of new reading material from a hearty book recommendation thread.

Hmmm..... maybe I should submit a "top 50 books of my favorite genre, your favorite books suck" type of article... even if it doesn't get greenlit, the discussions/recommendations on TF are still worth it.

Civil Wars put on a great show, but I would not put forth their cover songs as a good sample of what they do.

My current favorite Civil Wars tune is Poison & Wine (new window). Come for the cleavage, stay for the talent. Also liking the song they did with Taylor Swift, Safe & Sound (new window).

Still getting used the album, some good, some growing on me. Different from what I am used to buying.

Wow, hipster fail music. That sucked even more than the original. Thanks. Made it about 50 seconds in then hit the kill button.

Showing it in black and white raises the hipster level a few points.

So did she. The fact that they are actually capable and interesting, while unexpected in todays music, is a bonus.
