I have 2 kids in college as of this year.

Dear god, I don't want them coming back or asking for help with those student loans.

Please, .... economy, I'm begging here....

FTFA:Overall, employers projected hiring 10.2 percent more graduates than they did a year ago. The respondents revised their prediction upward from the association's most recent survey last September, when they estimated a 9.5 percent increase.

The average company in the survey reported 116 job openings, vs. 105 in 2011 and just 45 in 2010.

So 160 companies are creating 1760 more entry level jobs then last year?
It's something but I wouldn't get to excited yet
You have it where people who were working midlevel jobs got laid off and took entry level jobs they had held earlier in the careers. Why hire a new college grad who you have to train up when for the same money you can get someone with experience for the same money?

If they are going to school to be an engineer, especially in computers, then they are set.

organizmx: Just got back from Starbucks, and everyone who works there always seems really, really happy.

I had to stop going to a smaller coffee chain called Dutch Bros. Their stuff is great, but everyone must be required to be SUPER HAPPY at all times. They're bug eyed, loud, with blaring pop music in the background, and immediately start acting like we're long lost friends (asking me what I'm doing, what I'm up to, what are my plans for the weekend, etc). It's the same at every location and it's awful. I'm always courteous, but I'm just looking for a coffee, buddy, not a new best friend.

Not to be pedantic, as I am sure you are being sarcastic, but that line usually refers to stupid folks and/or those who choose not to go to college.

Truth be told, I kind of wish I had gone into trades. Don't get me wrong, I love being a medic and helping people at their most vulnerable, but it's not exactly high pay. If you're lucky enough to BE paid, that is, as many places rely heavily if not exclusively on volunteers.

But a good licensed and bonded plumber or electrician is making ~$100 an hour in most places and has great job security. Things always break or clog, after all.

I would miss helping the sick and injured, but I would be missing it from the deck of my freaking boat.

Why anyone would major in English or art history is beyond me.

Had a friend who majored in ah and claimed he was going to appraise art. His most comment phrase now is: "would you like to know what our specials are?"

What a load of crap the employment market has become. Every ad for employment requires college.
My son-in-law was looking to hire a beer display person to build displays in supermarkets. HR gave him the minimal requirements the the person should possess, yes a degree from college was a requirement.

Typing from an Android tablet right now, I feel ya.

My sister graduated from college with an English degree, thinking she could get a job ANYWHERE. She cited working at an ad agency proofreading things. After graduating she worked at J.Crew until she got a job as a flight attendant. Now she only does J.Crew part time.

That's something similar that I've been telling a buddy of mine. He went and wasted 5 years getting a BS of Applied Science or some crap and was having hell finding a job that he wanted. He would get more frustrated when he went out and the barrista had a master's degree and was serving him coffee. The waitress bringing his food had a BA.

On the flip side, I have another buddy that started trade school this year going for HVAC and he's got three job offers lined up for him the second he graduates. All of them wanting to start him at about $20/hr. All he has to do is pick where he wants to go, whether he wants to do the HVAC at a plant or wants to do commercial and residential calls.

You're absolutely right, man. Those tradesmen, plumbers, electricians, HVAC, that's where the real money is at right now and where the job growth is. If I wasn't set in what I was doing, I'd seriously consider going back to school and getting my plumbers licenses.

Job increases at the bottom still contribute to the overall recovery. Yes, it's hard to swallow when working minimum wage, but it's better to be working and have cash than not. Eventually something more fitting will arise.

Any engineer should be proficient in at least 3 of those 4 but the catch is you have to pay them. Look for engineering tech (ie engineering diploma rather than degree) they probably have enough knowledge that they could be highly productive in less than a year. I have no idea what your particulars are so please don't take this personally, but the problem most companies have in this area is that they expect a degree to to be the same as a diploma. You still need to train your employees regardless of how many letters they have after their name.

A recent grad from any decent design school has no excuse not to be proficient in these basic skills.

I can't speak for law, but even medicine has been hit hard. When the economy crapped out and everyone's 401k went in the toilet, all these nurses who were supposed to retire didn't. You have all sorts of people getting out of nursing school now and can't find a job nursing, except for in elderly care homes. And that's just soul sucking.

So much this, and I taught AutoCad for a year when I was between 'real' jobs. SolidWorks is the cats ass, but it costs about 10x more than AutoCad.

Serious question:

If you have a degree and cannot find a job, would it be reasonable to think that you could work at McDonald's and move up into lead or management pretty quick ? I mean look at the people who work at Walmart. At least here in Florida, they are retards of the highest order. I mean even a supervisor role in the night shift is better than homelessness.

Does anyone know anyone who has done this?
