Ok, so I am having a rather irreverent thought, and I am going to share it! Especially since I know that AlienD enjoys them....

I remember as a kid watching " The Greatest Story Ever Told" around this time..and I was thinking..what Caturday cats could we cast..and costume in the various roles....

Yes, I do have a window seat on the bus....

Chimpasaurus: sherpa18: lethological_lassie, akimbotoo, Zizzowop, yobbery: and anyone else I may have missed who is trying to medicate a hyperthyroid cat, I have a couple of suggestions based on my personal experience. While crushing the pills to mix in food is all well and good, it still tends to be a bit grainy. Try dissolving the pill in a little hot tap water before adding to the food.

Dragon hates pill pockets, so I hit upon the simple solution of breaking the pill into quarters so that they would fit into his favorite soft treats. Sure, he still beats me from time to time, but I figure (and my vet agrees) that his getting 3/4 of a pill instead of spitting the whole thing out where I find it a day later is better than nothing.

My 15 yr old was just diagnosed with slight hyperthyroidism. He just started meds and it's half a pill, so luckily I can hide it in a piece of meat and he eats it with no problems. Question though---do any of you know what happens if you don't medicate them for a few days? I'm worried about what will happen during the holidays when we go out of town for the weekend and no one else will come over to medicate him every day.

If it's slight hyperthyroidism you should be ok. One of my previous cats was moderately hyperthyroid and our vet told us that going without meds for four days wouldn't be an issue. Still, make a quick phone call and ask your vet...every cat is different.

valnt9 huh?? please to explain. I WANT to be able to colorize at times and I've seen it done by others...:

Anytime you respond to a comment, their name is in blue. If you add your post before the appropriate HTML closing tags, it will all appear in blue (as above). If you take the check mark out of the HTML enabled box and refresh, you will you will see all of the basic coding instead of pics, text color, etc.
You can also use basic HTML font color codes.

syzygy whizz: I've found that cleaning the wound with H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) IMMEDIATELY AS POSSIBLE really cuts down on swelling, redness, welting, and incipient infection. Seems to speed the healing a bit, too.

AGREED! As a frequent recipient of Dragon punctures, I think I actually learned this from you on a previous Caturday thread, and it works wonders for me.

Thanks for the hint, sherpa18! I'll try that. Got the baby food and liver/chicken kitty crack food this afternoon.

Chimpasaurus: I don't know that it is dangerous to skip the meds for a few days, but I do remember the vet tech telling me that the medication is fairly short lived in the animal's system. We had to get Sneaker's kidney levels checked once he was on the meds for a month, and since we had so much trouble getting it in him, it was almost 2 months before the dosing was consistent enough for the test. He's on methimazole. Here's a link that suggests missing "a few doses" isn't dangerous, but not optimal treatment. I'd check with your vet to be sure, tho.
http://lorie-huston.suite101.com/tapazole-or-methimazole-for-cats-a10 4 881

I heard the same thing. You get the most consistent levels if you divide the meds into two doses...morning and evening.
/or afternoon and middle of the night if you're the daring sort.

Sherpa With practice and frustration my wife has become a markswoman with the pill popper. I'd bet she could shoot one down Alice's throat at 5 yards.

Eli had a special treat tonight....lamb! I made my lamb with artchoke stew, and as I was cutting up the meat Eli was dancing around the kitchen. I gave him a small nobble. EIP me if you want the receipe.

Today is adopt a black animal day, according to our local no kill shelter. I am a black cat fan, so of course I have a Tabby...lol!

I think he was waiting for us. We understood the biteys...in a kill shelter he would not have made it past the first few days.. I am so glad he chose our Boy as his person. He enriches our lives. And leaves hair on my black slacks....

Max's method for pilling a cat:

(this being Fark, it's probably going to sound like a rape scene, but...)

Have pill ready.

Catch cat.

(optional) Take her somewhere where she can't get traction such as tile or hardwood floors.

Kneel down with feet together, and scooch cat between legs so she has nowhere to go.

Hold her head in one hand, turn her head up, and gently press on her jaws with finger and thumb so she opens her mouth.

With other hand, put the pill as far back in her mouth as you can, ideally past her tongue. I never realized that a cat could spit until the first time I tried to pill a cat. It's also helpful if you have callused fingers that can deal with poinky teeth.

Once it's in, close her mouth and stroke her from chin to chest with a knuckle to get her to swallow.

Let her go, and tell her with words and pettings and lovings what a good cat she was (even if she wasn't.)

Also, if there is a liquid version of whatever meds... Go for that instead of pills.

maxheck: Let her go, and tell her with words and pettings and lovings what a good cat she was (even if she wasn't.)

I pill a cat 2 times a day. I do the same routine but no crouching etc. I just go up, scruff him, shove the pill down his throat, pick him up and snuggle and try to keep his back paws away from my skin (yeah, he has done damage).

I pilled Bob the cat for at least 4 years while he was on tapazole, 2 times a day.

I've pilled my neighbors cat the same way.

Not sure how or why I can. I just do. Now if I have to pill the heathens....that might be different. and when I had to pill my dog....nothing quite like shoving a pepcid ac down a large shephard/labs throat. She only bit me once...and that was her last day (she told me a few days before that it was time). She let me pill her....she was a sweet dog. And Bob the cat...sweet. Robin....mmm, psycho but I can still pill him.

thankful that I can pill them. whew.

* mega snip* this is how I pill Eli. But I gotta tell you I have had kittehs who swallow, and then spit out the pill! Sneaky little buggers!

Honestly, I ask the doc if there is a shot. To me it is worth the cash not to have to brave Eli's claws..which need to be trimmed.....

Don't worry too much, he should be fine. Like any medication (hoomin or feline), the effect is cumulative, and it should be OK for a weekend. Right after I started Dragon on his pills I too had to leave for a couple of days, and while the vet was not thrilled, he did say that once a cat was on a regular schedule, a few days would not really matter. While hyperthyroidism is no joke, treatment is basically a long term maintenance issue, and it is not in the same category as insulin shots. YMMV, check with your vet...and please note that most vet techs I have dealt with run a side-line business sitting/feeding/medicating cats, usually at a very reasonable cost.

Oh now horses are a different thing all together! At the barn where I ride, I watched my instructor load a rubber tube, insert it into the horses mouth..rather far.. That's even more hardcore than what I had to do... The device I had a tube with a plastic plunger in it, but the worst part was that I was pilling Brandy, who was a BIG horse... like 18 hands or so. Sweetest, dumbest, most gentle horse you'd ever meet... But if he didn't want something he could throw you through a wall.

Usually, though the worst part was the sheer quantity of horse slobber.

The late dearly loved Cheeky only bit me once either. She'd had a paralysing stroke that got her hindquarters. This was before fast access to Eddie's Wheels & like places. We sadly decided to take her to the Bridge, assisted by our vet at the time. I held her close when he administered the euth solution. She bit me, then licked my wrist where she'd bitten. She was 17, this was 1993.

It breaks my heart when Sneaker runs from me and he does it everytime I approach him after we've done pills the hard way. Now we only do the crushed pill in his evening food, hence the need to suit his majesty's ever-changing tastes. He LOVES getting his nails, trimmed, though, since we've made it part of a kitty massage and treat session since he was a kitten.

And yes, Fark was truncating me when I tried to quote a long post earlier and I'm not drinking tonight. May've been one of the updates?

Nope, I did my time at CWRU in Cleveland during the late 80's. Great engineering school meant there were 4 guys for every girl on campus so I never had to pay for a drink. The bad news was that there was a severe shortage of truly great kissers...

Nope, I did my time at CWRU in Cleveland during the late 80's. Great engineering school meant there were 4 guys for every girl on campus so I never had to pay for a drink. The bad news was that there was a severe shortage of truly great kissers...

and another cat! Here is Baxter and Mom. He spent last weekend with the grandparents since Mike was out of town. Mom had to hold him for the pic because he won't hold still for a camera

took me a minute to figure that out, I was distracted by the alcohol in the first pic.
Come on over and have a margarita. Or if I can find the lemon you can just have a shot, I know there is a salt shaker here somewhere!

/isn't there a rule about the birthday girl doing a shot with everyone that comes to the party?
//hope Alien has a BIG bottle of tylenol handy

valnt9: Bingledak: ANybody say happy birthday to Alien yet?

I heard it was her birfday

you're kidding!
I would have never guessed!

and Yobbery, just out of
curiosity, how many cards and
such did you get for your b-day?
Alien challenged that we couldn't do as
much for her b-day...just wondering...
I know quite a few people said they
had sent her cards and Cadbury eggs, etc.
I think we did (or will) beat your deliveries.

Fourteen people had sent me cards.
You can't close out this contest for another week or two. I'm sure there's still stuff in transit. Mine should get there this week, but I think somewhere along the path to BC they randomly set a portion of the mail aside to let it age.

Getting back to topic, tigerose reminded me of horses and barn cats, which led to:

For many years, my little brother's best friend was a cat named "Nuisance," and here is how she got her name....

My dad used to do electrical work for a local riding academy where my sister and I took riding lessons, and I helped him out as a step-and-fetch. One day when we were working in the barn we happened across a mama cat and a whole lot of kittens.

Evidently one of the kittens decided she liked us, because after doing our work, packing up, then driving 20 miles (stopping at a gas station along the way) when we arrived home and as I was helping to unload the truck...

A tiny tortise-shell kitten hopped out from under the truck frame.

She looked at us wide-eyed like we were looking to eat her soul, then zoomed up the nearest tree.

Fine. I climbed up said nearest tree, detached her from the bark, and took her down getting scratches every single-handed way down the tree.

We took her inside and fed her, and things were going well... My family is no stranger to cats. Then my brother came in the door, and she took the opportunity to zip out while the door was open and zoom up the same tree.

I went up after her. Halfway down I figured out her name, which was "Nuisance." She bonded with my little brother and was his best friend for the rest of her life.

I know... CS, B.
