methinx, tnx for pix of Tibbs & Nova at varying ages.. For those without TF, yobbery's cat-reading-Simon's-Cat is from a gallery of cats reading books about cats that wasn't greenlit. ugh, i really wanted a nap but baby is being too fussy to sleep. she isn't wet, isn't hungry, struggles when i hold her and cries when i put her down. we had a nice long discussion on how i knew she was merely faking it and finally she decided to settle down and take a few minutes to sleep. elwood loves her, i think. he loves curling up next to her while she's passed out on my bed. i caught him wrapping his arms around her leg and resting his head on her but as soon as i moved to get the camera she woke up wanting to be fed.

i saw kate mulgrew in a production of antony and cleopatra. i was thrilled when she ran down the aisle so close i could have touched her. and then i got an accidental panty shot while she was lolling on the floor of the stage. still don't know how i felt about that. yes, i am geeky enough to have driven down to Connecticut just to see captain janeway play cleopatra

14 pounds!!!! holy cats!!!! Ellie is 15.7 pounds (and a fat) but the boys are 13, 12 and 10 pounds each and the dogs are 13 and 8 pounds...and Gremmie isn't done growing. He is gonna be a big boy.

Alien, I am sad that Gremmie isn't with you physically but I know you did what is best for him and for you. And I am so glad you get to see him and know how he is doing. I will share mine vicariously if you like. But you have to clean up the litterboxes and take the lizards away and save them.

BTW, it cracks me up that your birthday is on April Fool's day. I cannot imagine a more perfect birthday for you.

[i211.photobucket.com image 550x305]

plus cat...
[i211.photobucket.com image 450x586]

When i briefly worked in the car hire industry (i almost wrote cat hire, hihi) we sometimes dealt with those types. They are nice people but their ignorance is astounding. As in driving through flooded rivers astounding causing the SUV to be written of due to water damage. The guy thought it would be ok, he had a 4x4. Mostly we had UN, WHO and NGO types that were a bit more clued up.

I pretty much had the opinion that it was mostly the newer generations who were not taught world geography let alone American geography until I started meeting people here who didn't know where California was, or even that it was to the west. The story that really surprised me the most was an Iowa farmer I met at an air show who told me about a well-dressed "mature" woman he once met who corrected him when he told her where he was from. She said "where I'm from, we pronounce it O-hi-o" in a very superior voice.(!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?)

//I guess you can't fix stupid

I can't believe that people don't know the basics of geography, maybe a lot of schools cut back on it?

I remember growing up in elementary school we memorized state capitals, etc and I'm only 25. I can point out roughly were most countries are on a map. Also, my parents had maps and globes all around the place and I used to play with them so maybe that's it.

People really need to be taught critical thinking skills, even if I'm not sure of something I can't at least say "I'm going to need to research this" or "I don't think that's right".

Which is why we have the political climate we do!

Ornery Alien: Posting one pic at a time because I'm off to Hunger Games as soon as hubby gets home.

Nova and Tibbs weren't littermates, but I thought they'd bond because they're the same age and opposite genders. Nope! Nova doesn't mind other cats, but she prefers people. And Tibbs decided early on that he was in looooove with Pixel. He also seems to prefer hubby over me. I guess he just likes boys better. What can you do? Here he is resting his head on his Pixel.

lethological_lassie, akimbotoo, Zizzowop, yobbery: and anyone else I may have missed who is trying to medicate a hyperthyroid cat, I have a couple of suggestions based on my personal experience. While crushing the pills to mix in food is all well and good, it still tends to be a bit grainy. Try dissolving the pill in a little hot tap water before adding to the food.

Dragon hates pill pockets, so I hit upon the simple solution of breaking the pill into quarters so that they would fit into his favorite soft treats. Sure, he still beats me from time to time, but I figure (and my vet agrees) that his getting 3/4 of a pill instead of spitting the whole thing out where I find it a day later is better than nothing.

Odd cat toy: A fluorescent fixture ballast.

My Onyx is a sweet kitty, but in some ways she's the least playful cat ever. Occasionally she'll bat at the feathery/bell/crinkly thing I have hanging on the stairrail, but she's really not into toys.

Until today when I got a new ballast to replace the failing one in my work room. I sat on the bench on my porch and untangled it, you don't have to know what it is to understand it other than "it's a block with long springy wires coming out of it," and evidently Onyx is all about springy wires.

For probably the first time since we met, Onyx was going nuts over a toy. I sat there winding her around and around and around... "Woo! It's over here! No, wait! It's over there! Hah! It poked you in the butt! Hah! Now it's over here!"

There really is no science to cat toys.

/ mind you, there is a reason Onyx's other major name is "Noodlehead."

Remember

We come into this world with eyes wide,
With those we love, bide.

They enter the world blind of eye,
Someday soon to see the sky.

We have the gift to others hold,
To venture into the world so bold.

When they are small and weak,
Remind us to be humble and meek.

Salve to the soul, we seek.

Wanders into our life, makes it fine,
Mirrors the Divine.

All Love and Care,
Harden your heart if you dare.

Look into that face,
Find you place.
Fills a space,

You never knew was empty.

Rejoice.

(and anyone else who might be on the wrong end of a carelessly-deployed claw)

I've found that cleaning the wound with H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) IMMEDIATELY AS POSSIBLE really cuts down on swelling, redness, welting, and incipient infection.
Seems to speed the healing a bit, too.

I get a textbook example of "Your body's immune system reacting to an unfriendly invasion", i.e., swelling around the wound, redness, itching...
a quick cleansing with peroxide not only doesn't hurt (though it bubbles really cool), but can save you some problems down the road.

If only it were a claw hit - those heal rather cleanly for me. This was a double fang snap. I touched a tender spot I didn't know was there, and she snapped. Dr. gave me antibiotics & additional Tylenol 3 to deal with the pain. So far swelling & redness is confined to the distal portion of my left thumb. Makes typing interesting, and may postpone my piano lesson for the week.

My 15 yr old was just diagnosed with slight hyperthyroidism. He just started meds and it's half a pill, so luckily I can hide it in a piece of meat and he eats it with no problems. Question though---do any of you know what happens if you don't medicate them for a few days? I'm worried about what will happen during the holidays when we go out of town for the weekend and no one else will come over to medicate him every day.

Hurrah, happy birthday, AlienDandelion! I hope that the Cadbury Eggs where you are get imported from the UK or something, 'cause the ones we get in the US are total rubbish. RUBBISH! (Same for Kit-Kats. Why can't we get nice stuff here? I can't even say that Americans' taste is only in their mouths, because I've seen most of our food and that's a total lie.)

Either way, things have been nice and quiet here. Rainy, too. As such, Sonny has been extra-cuddly, though he apparently has no concept of personal space.

i60.photobucket.com

Really, now. Really?

i60.photobucket.com

He's also quite fond of sleeping on the pillows next to us at night, since we've got a cal-king bed and a massive number of pillows and blankets. The other night, the hubby and I were wrapped up together, chatting about this and that, being obscenely cute and cuddly, and just enjoying each others' company as we drifted off for sleep. Then, he gave me a rather cross-eyed look of surprised pain. Sonny, on one of the pillows above him, had decided that since human-scritchies are so nice, he'd share some kitty-scritchies with him! As such, he had planted all four paws in the top of my husband's scalp and was gently flexing his claws, looking quite satisfied with himself. ...It's the thought that counts?...

Yeee-ouch! I thought it looked like a bite. The antibiotic should fix you right up.

Once when my Mom was holding her cat Cindy for a shot, Cindy bit my Mom's wrist..and broke a bone! My said to the vet, " Glad I'm not a rabbit".

Chimpasaurus: sherpa18: lethological_lassie, akimbotoo, Zizzowop, yobbery: and anyone else I may have missed who is trying to medicate a hyperthyroid cat, I have a couple of suggestions based on my personal experience.

Thanks for the hint, sherpa18! I'll try that. Got the baby food and liver/chicken kitty crack food this afternoon.

Chimpasaurus: I don't know that it is dangerous to skip the meds for a few days, but I do remember the vet tech telling me that the medication is fairly short lived in the animal's system. We had to get Sneaker's kidney levels checked once he was on the meds for a month, and since we had so much trouble getting it in him, it was almost 2 months before the dosing was consistent enough for the test. He's on methimazole. Here's a link that suggests missing "a few doses" isn't dangerous, but not optimal treatment. I'd check with your vet to be sure, tho.

When the NotSmartKitty was young she bit the stuffing out of my hand. My Russian neighbor came to my door very early one morning, she held her fingers up by her ears and meowed at me, when I looked at her like she was nuts she grabbed my arm and dragged me to the fence.
I saw the kitty hanging by one back leg on the other side of the fence. She had been walking along the top of the privacy fence and fell with her back leg caught between two boards. She was a very heavy and hairy young cat and she was flailing around and yowling. I ran to the back yard and threw a sawhorse against the fence while calling my son to come and help.
After climbing up on the saw horse I could just barely reach over the fence to get a hold of her. I pulled her straight up and out of the boards while she grabbed my wrist with her claws and bit my hand to pieces. I tossed her to my son so he could check out her leg and went inside to pour peroxide on my hand and arm.
At work that day my hand looked like a mickey mouse balloon hand. I had to go to the quick care and get a tetanus shot and some antibiotics.

Ornery Alien: //Trying to think of what cake to make for my classmates to celebrate the end of our Masters in Counselling program. Freud seems cliche, Counsellor Troi cake (with mint frosting) probably too obscure for this crowd.

Fruit cake?
