I pretty much hate any policy that the conservatives come up with, but I'm okay with this. The penny has been useless for 20 years.

My daughter told me she was going to collect pennies now, so she could tell her kids about when you used to be able to buy something with them. I reminded her that that has never been true in her lifetime either.

I'm not seeing anything about MP's golden pensions being touched, but they'll raise the OAS to 67 and they'll dip into public servants pensions. Gesh.

Hey, but the Governor General is going to pay income tax for the first time ever. Of course, he's getting a raise to even that out, but still...

I actually wouldn't mind at all moving to Canada. At least there I could marry my partner and have him live in the same country that I do rather than this 2 continents thing we have to do now. Silly immigration laws and all that though...

Canada's not all sunshine and roses, but I spend enough time in here(Fark) to know we actually understand equality a whole lot better than most of our southern neighbours. If there is anything I can do from here, let me know..EIP. If you find yourself near Toronto, let me know too, I don't get to cook for company often enough.

I try to get to Toronto once a year. My partner is coming to the US next month, and I've been trying to get him to get a Canadian tourist visa so we can visit Toronto together. I haven't won that battle though (apparently, Canadian tourist visas aren't so easy to get for Russians). I will try to remember to give you a warning before I head up next time.

As long as the Conservatives (think moderate Republicans) are in charge with a majority government, I don't see a lot of positive reform in the visa/immigration thing any time soon... There are a lot of Russians at the north end of Toronto, any chance he might know someone? Have a 2nd cousin twice removed? 3rd cousin that knew a guy?

I once had a problem with pigeons nesting on my balcony. They make the most godawful cooing noises, especially in the wee hours of the morning.

I had a coin bank and would hurl pennies at them to get them to shut up.

I guess now it'll be nickles.

Now every coin collector will hoard pennies thinking they'll be worth something some day. In reality, millions if not billions of pennies are in circulation so you might as well melt them down now and get your 1.6 cents worth

Millions of college students will never "penny" somebody and their girlfriend into their dorm room while they are having a weekend sex session. It's so sad.

I don't think it will work very well with dimes or quarters or even nickels. They're just not the right size.

I have to admit that it will make little practical difference because for transactions, the difference between the last penny value and the price you pay without the penny will be plus or minus five cents. A lot of merchants give you the benefit of the doubt or have a "need a penny, take a penny" bowl and some donate any "profit" to charity. You won't lose pennies on every item, just the after tax total, and the store can afford to give you a nickel instead of three cents on a $100 purchase.

Still, the penny has sentimental value. Think of all the JFKs that will vanish from our pockets, not to mention the kissing Lincolns and the Lord's Prayer on a penny (or the Gettysburg Address, as the case may be).

Before long, people will be demanding the abolition of the nickel. Debasement of the currency is just too convenient for governments to give up, which is the fallacy of gold and silver bugs. Fiat currency is just as good as gold--which is also an arbitrary and easy to debase store of value.

Some cynics believe this is just a diversionary tactic any way. The cost of making pennies is trivial compared to other government expenditures and even waste. They could save more money but re-using old binders by buying binders with a slot for the label instead of sticky labels that spoil the binder for re-use. I expect the Government spends more on paperclips that get thrown into paper recycling bins. I have certainly saved a few hundred dollars by not doing this myself.

What are you talking about? They're almost pulling this directly from the US GOP playbook: all cuts and no revenue increases. That's the reverse of progressive (plus I'll bet it tanks their economy).

I was really just referring to the pennies. Even though if I were Canadian I would not vote for their Conservative Party, I don't think they're nearly as scary as the US Republican Party. More like Blue Dog Democrats.

And now we won't be able to get rid of pennies here in the U.S. for another 50 years because the GOP will tie the idea to Canada and socialism and unAmericanism.

Geez, seriously? I've never had a problem spending Canadian small change. And where do I get it in the first place? In change. It circulates. Doesn't work in vending machines, but eh, it happens. Then again, Canada's really not that far away. The closer the border, the more mixed up the change?

This completely distorts the equilibrium achieved by the markets in the price of thoughts and unsolicited viewpoints. I am not happy.

That's pretty stupid considering the two currencies have been roughly on par for the last few years.

I tried to spend a Sacajawea dollar in Washington state and had the clerk hand it back to me saying "We don't take Canadian money." I handed it back and explained that her government had issued dollar coins last year and the one she was holding was from a Walmart in Tulsa. She seem confused by the whole idea.

Funny thing about the Tories: they were blamed for increasing the deficit, back during the minority government days, and now are going to be blamed for trying to eliminate it. So they can't win, because they'll always be accused by the usual shrieking neurotics of having a Secret Right-Wing agenda, even when that agenda is cunningly disguised by spending increases.

In any case the proposed "cuts" are far milder than they could have been, and some new programmes are even being funded. $1 billion for science and technology, and $275 for aboriginal education? Guess the Fourth Reich will have to wait.

That's the reverse of progressive (plus I'll bet it tanks their economy).

Whereas spending increases funded by raising taxes on small business and the middle class would somehow help the economy? Far from being "tanked", Canada's economy over the past few years has being doing exceptionally well, and if you were honest you'd admit that several years of Tory rule can account for a good deal of that. (By contrast, all you have to do is look at the state of the US under their current Idiot- in- Chief.)

I'm happy about the penny. Less so about this one:

Elections Canada funding will be cut by $7.5 million a year, starting in 2012-13. (new window)

But I suppose they had it coming after making such a fuss about those silly little robo-calls.

Ivo Shandor: But I suppose they had it coming after making such a fuss about those silly little robo-calls.

Yeah, I'm sure the calls prevented the NDP from getting the massive landslide they would otherwise have had coming.

Interestingly, I recently noticed this comment on a Canadian politics blog: "I'm in Alberta where an election was called this morning, and I just sat through the most offensive robocall "poll" you can imagine. As soon as I pressed "2" to indicate that I was planning to vote Wildrose, the questions changed to a personal attack: "Press 1 if you are opposed to proper health care, Press 2 if you think students don't deserve to go to kindergarten, Press 3 if you think that people should be allowed to drive drunk up to the legal limit without consequence, etc., etc."

Gosh, one would almost think from reading this that dirty tricks are not the monopoly of any one political party (though they are certainly to be deplored whenever they occur, of course).

oh man I cant stop laughing, how many paperclips could you possibly be buying that you were able to save a few hundred dollars by making sure none end up in the recycling bin?

just in case you arent trolling, the purpose of eliminating the penny isnt to save the government money, its to so business can increase productivity by not having to deal with them. Their value isnt high enough to justify the amount of time spent storing them, counting them, exchanging them etc.

It's not huge, but it's not insignificant. My rough calculation is that if the U. S. Mint took back all 140 billion (est) pennies in circulation and sold the metals on the open market, they'd recover about $1.15 billion.

Obviously, Canada would recover much less.
