Well shiat, I have never seen so many pretentious Debbie Downers in a single thread. Sure, a 1,000 hp Mustang is totally ridiculous and probably pointless, but that's also what makes it so insanely fun. The fact that we can even engineer something like this is farkin amazing and totally kickass. Is it really that hard for you guys to just enjoy something? You don't even have to pay for it or get behind the wheel.

$200K?

I can think of a lot more fun things to blow 200K on, vehicular-wise.

Doesn't seem very practical. Plus these new plastic Mustangs are chick cars. 80% of Mustang drivers around here are middle aged women, the rest are old baby boomer guys.

Groink: Beyond the whole car versus car issue, I think some people are mistaken about one thing: the best handling or best engineered car isn't going to imbue you with superior driving skills. Idiot driver is still idiot driver with all the same bad habits.

This.

I've seen a horrible POS Taurus out-drive an Alfa on an ice-racing track.

The operative word is Drive.

Bad drivers will pay through the nose, fail, then blame the car.

Great drivers can seemingly take anything, I mean anything, and drive circles around others, myself included.

At that point, you have to laugh, and realize that in many cases it comes down to skill. You don't let the butthurt even hit you; you realize you got spanked by someone who was on their game more, and then you grin and keep reaching for that level of skill, and better.

But if you do suffer from being easily knocked off your pivot, then that means you're probably going to be all up in your own mind as you race, which again means, you're not truly in it.

Above all, have fun. The moment you want to share in something cool, you'll have my undivided attention. Try to tell me how cool you are, and my eyes glaze over.

Girion47: its not even about going fast, its about traction. How does your mustang handle snow? My WRX has never slid on me. Neither has my A4.

You seriously just moved the goalpost yet again.

To answer your question, though, I would never drive my car in the snow. I don't doubt that your cars would perform better in snow. Then again, your cars would outperform a Ferrari Enzo in the snow too, so what's your point?

Awright, here's my two cents.

Cars are like women. What one guy likes, the other might not be into.

It's OK to go for what lights you up - seriously. I'd far rather drive something that makes me insanely happy for what I get out of it, than drive something I hate just because the vox populi gets a boner when I go by. I'm living for me, not you. If you happen to dig what I'm into and vice-versa, awesome.

So, yeah - I think that *every* car, right down to the lowly Pinto, gives something unique to the driver that no other car can. The whole point is not to go all I HAVE THE BEEF SUPREEEME of cars, but to ENJOY AS MANY AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN BEFORE YOU DIE.

Reminds me of the time that Intel announced a 1 GHz PC processor.
The local news went on the street, asking people if they felt they needed a 1 GHz computer.

I'd rather have a 1 THz machine! Give me a break!

That kind of horsepower is pointless unless you spend all day every day at the track. There's only so much fun to be had showing off around the city by racing to the next red light while a Geo Metro can keep up by doing the speed limit.

Plus I'm antisocial and would rather not invite other people to talk to me about my car.

Oh FFS.

It's a muscle car.

It's purpose in life is to go really, really fast in a straight line (or on an oval track), not to break records 'round the 'Ring.

mercator_psi: asciibaron: i bet it handles great in the corners.

Exactly. If they even attempt to steer it, it'll end up rolling and burning into a charred cinder about the size of the driver's micropeen.

I want a Caterham. Really badly. They look like the most fun you can have in a car without hookers and blow.

I finished building a Westfield three years ago. Here's a pic:

a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net

Essentially, Westfield is Caterham's competition in the UK. Went with Westfield after the US dealer was an absolute rude jackass.

Built the whole car for under 15k, cornering is 1.2G, (Yes, not 1.02) and braking is 1.3G. 0 to 60 is under 5 seconds. It's a fun giant-killer, essentially a four wheeled motorcycle.

I don't get the fascination with sports cars. Give me a car that has a good stereo, and will get me from point A to point B with no trouble, and I am perfectly happy.

asciibaron: steamingpile: r1niceboy: Great news. Now if they'd could just learn to use suspension that wasn't taken from a shopping cart, we'd have a Ford that wasn't a complete deathtrap taking a bend at anything above 40mph.

None of you even have a clue what you are talking about, three changes and even 99 mustangs handle great, most road guys learned how to drive on the old fox body mustangs.

three changes, let me guess, new front end, replace rear with indy, and then you do what for the body roll?

Steel I-beam strut tower braces, adamantium anti-roll bars, some roller coaster track...
