This. I'm not laughing at Romney because he's rich, I'm laughing at him because he's trying to pretend he's not. in front of the masses.

So, someone should ask him how a regular guy would have to bribe city employees to quickly approve of an elevator for his cars.

that's right - the car elevator guy

Yellow Beard: out of curiosity, when was the last time a poor person was elected president?

Clinton wasn't that rich in 1992. Before him? Probably Ike or Truman.

Most recently, Truman.

Yellow Beard: out of curiosity, when was the last time a poor person was elected president?

Jimmy Carter lived in public housing when he was young, but he was governor for years before becoming President.

Anyone think there is something amusing about Obama, a pull yourself up by the bootstraps type monogamist vs Romney, a born millionaire polygamist(theoretically) who was the governor of an east coast state?

There is something very entertaining about Romney getting the pres nom. from republicans(when it happens.)

Yellow Beard: out of curiosity, when was the last time a poor person was elected president?

Well, if we're going by net worth comparisons, Obama has the lowest net worth in recent history, only about $5M. The last one lower than that was Truman, who is probably the best recent qualifies by everyone's standards.

The funniest thing is that he did do that a couple times (the I'M NOT APOLOGIZING FOR BEING SUCCESSFUL etc), but by not sticking with it he sounded like even more of a douchenozzle than before.

Yellow Beard: out of curiosity, when was the last time a poor person was elected president?

The last poor person was probably Truman. He was basically bankrupt before becoming a Senator in '34.

As far as 'not rich', you've got more choices. Most of Obama's money came from his book sales, so he wasn't rich until just a few years ago. I don't remember a lot of presidents in the Romney/Bush level of wealth. Kennedy and the Roosevelts were probably the only ones at that kind of money in the 1900's.

Yeah, no shiat. I don't need the president to be a regular person, hell I don't even want it. I just want the POTUS to give a shiat about regular guys.

"Look, I'm rich as fark, I have no idea what it's like to live paycheck to paycheck. I've been amazingly successful in my private business. But I recognize I'm not like most of Americans. So I've been doing a lot of talking with people who are and let me tell you, I'm going to keep meeting with people throughout my presidency. These are the people I'm going to focus my presidency on."

Yeah, I think that would go a long way.

I like that he is trying to be more personable.

However, I'm not going to vote for someone based on if I want to have a beer with them. I have a lot of people I drink beer with, and I don't think any of them are fit to be President of the United States. I'm going to look at his background and what he said he would do if President .... then I will make my decision.

In my opinion, Mr. Romney's main problem is that he is so far behind President Obama right from the start. President Obama has hit the brakes on a recessing economy, he's getting people back to work, he is making reforms in both health care and finance and has a seemingly magnetic personality when people speak with him. Sure, the sitting President has made some mistakes, but none that would keep me from wanting to see his competitor take the position. Yet.

When Gore and Kerry ran, the big criteria for the right was "Regular guy-ness" and a lack of "elite-ism"

I guess that no longer matters.

It's a little weirder than not mattering. The supporters are trying to prove the opposite. And then you have Santorum in the wings still basically saying Obama is the elitist in the race.

That number assumes full family inheritance. Kennedy didn't have nearly that personally, his father had most of it.

Oh, no question. I would hope that whatever formula they used was the same for everyone, though. It's not so much the raw, individual figures but how they compare against the others'.

Depends if you're talking about their early life or when they were running for president. Nobody since Kennedy was born into a very wealthy family except for the Bushes.

dang, I must be poor as fark then if 5mill is poor.
In today's world, a genuinely poor person has zero shot at any of the big offices.
