Let's Go, Bruins!

Brian Burke will be yet another GM who brings talent to Toronto, only to watch it flounder and die.

Given the choice between Columbus and Toronto, I wonder if Rick Nash wouldn't just rather stay in Columbus.

I don't know if Montreal has anything to sigh in relief about, though...

As much as the Leafs suck right now, they're still ahead of the Habs by three points in the Conference.

I'm new to hockey, but don't the conference standings go "Playoffs", "Continuing mediocrity", "Draft picks"?

(Unless you're the Blue Jackets, in which case "mediocrity" is excessive praise)

The president of Maple Leaf Foods (responsible for the Canadian listeria outbreak in 2008) was fielding questions about the possibility of another outbreak. Someone asked a question about kissing the Stanley Cup, wanting to know that if there was any risk of contamination, to which he quipped that no Maple Leafs have touched the Stanley Cup since 1967.

I suppose, but I don't know if it's something any team is relieved about... But, yeah, the Habs should get a good first rounder over the summer.

Toronto's problem, from an outside perspective, is that they have no team identity. Unless you count incompetent management as a team identity. The top line is good, but not good enough to really be a force like the Sedins or the Malkin line. The top D pairing tries to make up for being a defensive liability by chipping in on offense but doesn't produce the points. Their depth is OK but they can't roll 4 lines. They aren't particularly fast, and they don't grind particularly well.

Maybe it's because I mostly follow Western conference teams (outside of the NBC mandated PHI/WSH/PIT/NYR), but Toronto can't play 'their game' because they don't know what their strengths are. Even the Blue Jackets came into the season with a plan, even if it was just standing around and watching Nash and Carter try to score.

2012-03-28 10:58:38 AM
Toronto's problem is that they can never do a proper rebuild. The fans and market and media won't let them.

And by proper rebuild, I don't just mean finishing poorly and getting a high draft pick. I mean restocking the farm by trading their mediocre core for more picks and prospects.

Instead, they're always buyers. Acquiring Kessel. Acquiring Phaneuf. Acquiring Connolly. This is a team that spends to the cap every year. They need to sell.

Even though absolutely terrible, they have more fans than the vast majority of teams. And I will have a good time mocking as many of them as I can.

of course that is a big part of the reason why they are content with mediocrity and failure.

Jubeebee: Toronto's problem, from an outside perspective, is that they have no team identity.

They have an alright mix of young skill and speed among their forwards, but no real "power forward" that can play alongside a Kessel and/or Grabovski but still give some toughness at the same time. With Toronto, it seems like every line they throw at you is horribly one-dimensional.

If the Sharks miss the playoffs and want to blow things up this offseason, a Ryane Clowe might be a big help to Toronto, since he can punch in 20+ goals a year for you AND provide a snarl at the top of the lineup.

/of course, I didn't even go into their abysmal defense.

2012-03-28 11:08:24 AM
Phaneuf and Kessel are good players to build around. The problem is that their supporting cast is very pedestrian. Kessel needs a big body to make some room for him down low on his line. He needs a good #2 line to play against the top line on the other team. Phaneuf needs a goalie that doesn't suck.

Toronto needs a coach that has a good d-zone system to improve their abysmal PK and very mediocre team defense. If the cards fall right and Carlyle can pull a few bunnies out of his ass, they might make that playoffs next year as a #7.

Why are they content with failure? They spend to the cap, they have about 18 former GM's as assistants to Burke. They spend as much on scouting and development as anyone else. Do you think ownership is content to not have any home playoff dates? You think they like not getting that revenue?

This myth that they don't want to win is ridiculous and only people who don't understand the game buy into. They want to win, they want playoff dates. They just don't know who to do it and all of their attempts have been awful.

Its not complicated, they're just incompetent.

Hey, come on, don't talk like that; I'm cheering for the Sabres to take the 8th (7-8 Sens-Sabres ECF? You know you want it...)

W.r.t. the Sens: I don't care who's in net, putting up 8 on the Pens is a good sign (granted, them giving up 5 to the Isles diminishes that somewhat), and then burning down the barn in Winnipeg, that feels like a turnaround (that Montreal game where Erik freakin' Cole scored a natty in 5 minutes had to be a wake up call).

I think the East standings we see today are how they'll finish, save for maybe a Pens/Rangers flip-flop, or a Devils surge/collapse into 5th/7th.

Assuming Sabres in 8: who you do you want to meet in Rd. 1?

Don't get me wrong, Buffalo would be an underdog to any top seed. But I think that's a more favorable match-up than either the Pens or the Bruins.

I became a Leafs fan when I was in high school and they had the Doug Gilmour/Wendel Clark/Dave Andreychuk axis winning games and almost making the Stanley Cup where they lost to Gretzky and the Kings. They were a hardcore team, dishing out brutal hits and also had enough offensive firepower to keep them in most games.

Then, the team aged, players got traded and the Leafs never really recovered. They had one of the best players in hockey (Mats Sundin) and couldn't get anything put in place around him. But worst of all, they have *never* picked a plan for the franchise and stuck with it. One year it's a free agency binge, the next it's a youth movement, etc. You have to pick something and play it out for more than a year.

As for the ownership, the problem is that the Ontario Teachers Fund is happy as long as they are profitable. And they are, massively so. The Leafs lack an owner who can put the boots to people and instill a drive towards winning. I think they've tried, but the Leafs have been dysfunctional ever since Cliff Fletcher left.

All of this said, the Harold Ballard years were FAR worse. Read 'Maple Leaf Blues' for a sample of what it's like to have an owner who is utterly self promoting above the team and uses the franchise as an ATM.

/Still a Leafs fan
//Loyalty dammit
