The pet store owner went from sympathetic figure to full derp pretty quickly. Wonder what douchebag reporter said other than, "Can Mullet-Boy visit the pig?"

That is one spectacular mullet. All party, all the time. Mohawk in the front, long to the shoulders at the back. Well cared for. Yes, and 8/10 for sure.

They do know a pot belly pig is a very clean pet right? Much nicer than most yappy dogs that crap all over the fricken place.

Seriously, he could have been mistaken about the law and he had taken the steps for a refund.

What should be done is a reconsideration of the rule. I'm sure it's an old blanket barnyard animal rule that prevents a neighbor from running a small scale farm in a residential neighborhood, but having one potbelly pig isn't going to turn the city into Green Acres

Green Acres simul-post!

Anyway, I think they are more concerned about this possibility.

Apparently, the pig doesn't have a spider lady-friend.

The pet shop owner probably turned surly because the pig has already been put down. Once a pig has acclimated to a family, it is unable to transition back to either the wild or a new owner.

Sad, but Chumly is sleeping with the eggs now.

Well, there's some accusatory context that it was the store owner's fault for not informing them of the laws for pets in their city. Which, BTW, MANY of his customers probably don't follow.

The idea that The Mullet could visit him IS a douchebag question, because it's emotionally loaded yet impractical. I mean, he's a business owner, he sold that pig. He didn't sell it with emotional baggage. You can't be dicking around calling your customers with sob stories about prior owners wanting to come by. You can't sell pets and then come back and say that in ANY way it's still someone else's pet.

Interesting things to point out in this story . . .
First of all, BWAHAHAA! Hyper Mullet! For a while I was working in Michigan, and I saw quite a few kids sporting mullets that were clearly cut by mom, it's quite common - but that kid deserves a mullet trophy.
In my travels, something I have noticed about small town local tv news, and it is something that Drew has pointed out about the news cycles these days - - small towns don't really have enough "news" to fill a nightly report every night. And what I have noticed is that in small town local news there will inevitably be a story about somebody's pet, to fill out the half hour.
And, I believe the store owner when he said he wouldn't have sold it to the mom if he knew - the mom says "she told me it was ok to have a pig in Warren". So it wasn't the store owner, it was some low level clerk who probably didn't know any better.
Finally, feral pigs that escape from farms/owners, they are a serious problem in this country. You can find several reports about it on the 'net such as this one Feral Pig Problem (new window). Pigs are a non-native species to this country, and the fact that this kid's pig escaped demonstrates why having them as pets is not necessarily a desirable thing in places like Warren.

Every time you look into buying a farm animal (and I don't know too many people that are dumb enough to not realize pigs are generally considered farm animals...) you should always look into your city's laws. The pet store should inform people of the law, but that doesn't take the responsibility off the person buying. Most cities don't allow traditional farm animals on your property, though there are many that seem to be changing their laws specifically regarding chickens since a lot of people with smaller properties seem to be getting into raising them for eggs and meat since they don't take up much room and aren't as stinky or destructive to property as larger animals. Hell, dogs are a way bigger problem as far as that goes in cities than a small amount of hens would generally would be.

Anyway, I wonder what other research the people didn't do on owning a pig? A lot of people buy a cute little pig and give them up when they start getting large, destructive, and hard to handle and clean up after. In general I don't think pet stores should even be able to sell the things. If the pet store carries something it gives people the idea that they're housepets. And though some people have pigs that have made decent housepets (with a lot of work, training, exercise, and cleanup), most are better off outdoors in a proper enclosure, even the smaller species.

If anything, the City of Warren should either repeal such a pointless law, or at least revise it to allow permits of some type to be purchased.

And as for the station going on about the kid's hairstyle, I call dirty pool. Just give the kid his pig back already. If this were my kid, I'd shove a lawsuit down the station manager's throat for allowing this story on their site as-is, if only to make a point and run their name through the mud...

Anyone who wants a "pet pig" needs to run down to the farm right quick and see what that cute little piggy is going to grow up into...and then get the kid a guinea pig instead. It's just as smelly and makes the same noise, but fits in a much smaller cage and won't live nearly as long.

2012-03-28 04:07:51 AM
Oh, and I love how the news and parents imply that the boy should somehow be entitled to own a farm animal (that they couldn't keep contained nonetheless, considering it escaped) because the stupid parents didn't do their research and let him get attached to it. Sorry lady, but rather than telling your son he deserves to have his pig back, maybe you should explain that you didn't check with the city like you should have, and that type of animal belongs on a farm anyway and not in the house, for good reason.
Also, no one should be stupid enough to trust a salesperson as far as knowing the law, or even general facts about what they're selling. Who even knows how long they've been working there, or how well they're trained, or how much of their training they remember? Most minimum wage employees aren't gonna put a ton of effort into learning everything about what they're selling, since they're likely only there, or think they are, until they find better employment.
Not to mention this woman CLAIMS this mystery salesperson told them it was ok, when more likely she didn't even care about the law and may not have even asked, or if she did just ignored it.
I've become acquainted with several pet store owners due to being in the fish hobby, going as far as to help them out with customers or maintenance, and one of my close friends even owned one not long ago, and as far as I've seen you can tell most customers all kinds of information and they'll simply ignore it if they really want the animal. Or they'll just lie about where they live, or their enclosures. Can't keep an Oscar in that betta cup you just bought? "Don't worry I'm gonna upgrade when I get paid." But of course the person never comes back to do so, and then tries to get a refund when they inevitably kill their fish.
Excuse me for assuming most of the customers are like that, IME they are. Only a small percentage seem to actually want to care for their animals properly, and most of them are going to get bored with them and get rid of them soon anyway. The large majority of pet sales from a store are impulse buys, and the person has their heart set on the animal right then, no matter whether it's legal, they don't have the means or facilities to care for it, or don't know enough about it to care for it properly, etc. And in the end the pet store always gets blamed because they wanted that animal RIGHT NOW, rather than doing the research to see if they should have it.
You can educate people on the animal all you want (although I do agree that most pet stores need to be more vigilant), and more likely than not it'll go in one ear and out the other.

What makes you think it's a pointless law? Pigs generally don't make good pets in the city, and feral pigs are a problem in our country. These people demonstrated quite adeptly that they are one of the many people that shouldn't own one consider they allowed their animal to escape.
As far as permits, I'd assume that those would require the person prove they can properly contain the animal, and considering the pig escaped which is why the city found out in the first place, obviously they weren't a very good candidate for a permit if there was such a thing.

And what is your grounds for suing the station if it was your kid? The parents seemed to voluntarily go on the news and biatch that their son is entitled to an animal that they illegally owned in the first place. After you put you and your kid's face and story out in public, people are entitled to make whatever opinion they deem appropriate, including the media, as long as libelous comments aren't made.
