WTF?

2012-03-27 12:51:42 PM
shiat.

2012-03-27 12:53:40 PM
Well, I can't get to the article, but probably don't have to to know how dumb this is.

2012-03-27 01:06:01 PM
I fail to see how the school has any jurisdiction over how a student users twitter (allegedly) from their home computer. Then again, I didn't see how Wales had the authority to jail a guy for tweeting racist shiat about a soccer player who had a heart attack, but that didn't stop them.

2012-03-27 01:17:21 PM
Well, fark that.

Methadone Girls: Well, I can't get to the article, but probably don't have to to know how dumb this is.

Here's an article from an IN paper: http://www.indianasnewscenter.com/news/local/High-School-Senior-Expell ed-For-Tweeting-Profanity---144022966.html (new window)

The school is saying he did it from a school computer, student says he did it from home. Then the school says something about being able to track his account even if he did it from home, so it's all BS.

2012-03-27 01:18:39 PM
The school says he used a school computer for it. He says it was a home computer.

2012-03-27 01:19:11 PM
Moral of the story: keep your damn tweets private

Wait, I thought schools always complained that they're not there to be parents.

FirstNationalBastard: Wait, I thought schools always complained that they're not there to be parents.

Where? In loco parentis is a foundation for a shiatload of education law.

Anyway, wise administrators know which battles to fight. This isn't one of them. This is what happens when a student defies a bad administrator's authoritah! Good luck with the expensive and inevitable lawsuit.

2012-03-27 02:17:49 PM
Yeah school is pretty much doomed on this one.

2012-03-27 02:36:54 PM
Blues_X: The school says he used a school computer for it. He says it was a home computer.

If only there is a way to track down information like that. Regardless, I see a couple of things: a) the school is trying to head-off the inevitable scenario where seniors start pulling stupid shiat for one last prank, or 2) this kid is a prick, bully, whatever, and the administration is getting some payback for four years of hell. Either way, I don't think the punishment fits. Hell, coaches use that kind of language all the time in high school not to mention some of the teachers. So I wonder where he got it from? Certainly not his mom. She struck me as a pillar of the community in that video.

I think this school should check out the Iron Sheik's Twitter feed then pull them selves back to earth.

He's in another school, but he's barred from prom and graduation. Depending how badly he wants in is how a suit will be filed.

He might just want to get on with his life, but if he wanted to call the school on this, it would be interesting.

I would suspect the school would cave in, pay a few grand, and let him go rather than admit they have a BS excuse.

by god... this may actually be a real first amendment issue.

If I ever have kids, I will teach them that there are certain behaviors, thoughts, beliefs, and speech that should not be uttered in public, and especially not through social media (or even "private" media like texts!)

It's not that I think those behaviors, thoughts, beliefs, or speech are inherently wrong. The problem is this country has embraced such an insane ideal of what is proper and valid that you have to tiptoe on eggshells and broken glass to avoid being punished for something that ought to be a complete non-issue. My children will fear the society you have built. My children will hate the civilization you have ruined. You might root out some of us, but most of us will sneak along; we might even pretend to be your friends. Someday your descendants will pay the price and your genetic line will be ended. I only wish you could be there to suffer knowing that the entirety of your life will have been in vain, and that you are now as empty and as worthless as your fantastical beliefs.

I've already emailed the school's administrators. Pending their response, my next addressees will be the three members of Congress who represent Garrett, Indiana. The moral of this story: people with math degrees (the principal and assistant principal) often know approximately dickall about the written word. Austin Carroll will be reinstated.

School says he did it from their computers. Which one of them is wrong could make a huge difference.

Austin was expelled from Garrett High School after tweeting the F-word under his account. The school claims it was done from a school computer. Austin says he did it from home.

"If my account is on my own personal account, I don't think the school or anybody should be looking at it. Because it's my own personal stuff and it's none of their business," said Carroll.

That it's your "personal" account is irrelevant if you did do it from a school computer.

That said...
The principal at Garrett High School claims their system tracks all the tweets on Twitter when a student logs in, meaning even if he did tweet it from home their system could have recognized it when he logged in again at school.

This could be saying that they've got a NetNanny type thing that scans accessed web pages for profanity, so if he accessed his Twitter account at school, it would throw up an alert that he's accessing a sensitive site.
But that's just supposition. I also wouldn't necessarily take the principal's understanding of technology as an accurate reflection of what they did. Filtering software could just as easily have been watching the contents of POST tags, which would point to him posting it at school.

This should be pretty easy, though. Twitter keeps timestamps. What time did he post it? Evening, or midday?

Also, that said...
"I didn't post the thing at school but their computer is saying that I did post it, and I shouldn't be getting in trouble for stuff I did on my own time, on my own computer," said Carroll.

What kind of idiot speaks in run-on sentences?

Not sure I understand your point... If it's the school's computer, they can place whatever restrictions they want on it. You can't use Twitter. You can't watch porn. You can't look at YouTube. You can't visit sites ending in .com. Etc.
It's not about whether some third party will be confused as to whether you're acting as an agent of the school, it's that the school has a right to control its property that it's letting you use.

CS, B:

To this day I rarely if ever swear, because every summer of high school I worked as a construction grunt and found out the hard way that if you spend 3 months of a year swearing like a construction worker it's rather difficult to *stop* talking like that the other 9 months.

I figured that out after unconsciously dropping the F-bomb during a discussion of the book of Genesis in English class. I didn't get in any trouble for it, I think the teacher knew that I was at least as startled by my use of the word as rest of the class was. But I figured out that that was just dumb behavior, so I don't indulge in it.

But yeah, sometimes people laugh at my talking like Ned Flanders from the Simpson at times when other people would use stronger language.

I know a guy who was born with his lower arm missing. He sometimes uses a prosthetic, and sometimes doesn't. During crunch times at work, he'd hang the prosthetic lower arm up in the door of his cubicle so people couldn't get in there and distract him. Someone complained to HR that it made them feel uncomfortable, and HR actually tried to tell him that he MUST wear his prosthetic when he's in the office. He kindly pointed out that he could sue the pants of them for discrimination and they relented. It's a really good thing for them that he's a genuinely nice guy.

Some little snowflake was actually offended that he didn't have a whole arm. How did they think HE felt about it? Jackasses.
