The St. Louis Blues made the playoffs every year from 1980 to 2004, but whatever.

When you have more teams in the playoffs than out, getting in is no big accomplishment.

2012-03-27 11:53:38 AM
Technically, subby, as there were no playoffs in 2004-05 and the Red Wings have made it 21 consecutive seasons, a person born the last time they missed the playoffs (1990) would now be 22.

How many cups did they win? Hell, how many cup finals did they reach during that stretch?

None. But the headline made a big deal out of the playoff streak. I doubt Red Wings really care about the streak, though.

Bruins made it every year from 1968 to 1996.

Much like the Wings, I don't care about a streak. All I care about is them winning the Cup.

2012-03-27 12:37:54 PM
Eh, if I was going to congratulate the Red Wings on something it would be the Cups they've won, not playoff appearances. When over half of your league makes the playoffs every year, it's not like that's a major accomplishment. As others in this thread have pointed out, other teams have had streaks just as long or longer.

The fun part is when the playoffs start, anyway. That Preds/Wings matchup in the first round is going to be some great freakin hockey.

They did make it once, although given how that series went for them, I suppose you can still say they avoided it.

Which is probably why the topic is about it happening 21 times in a row, not just once.

The odds of it happening 21 years in a row is exceedingly small

Considering this is a thread about consecutive playoff appearances, the Cup talk is beside the point.

OTOH... the Blues would probably have been better off sucking a couple of those years and getting some decent draft picks instead of 1st round losses.

I'd rather my team won big and lost big instead of being just "okay" for 20 years... so, props to the Wings for managing to be very good for 20+ years.

Red Wings trifecta in play.

I would like to take this moment to point out that tonight the Toronto maple leafs are a regulation loss away from missing their 7th consecutive playoffs. Prior to this streak the leafs have NEVER missed the playoffs 3 years in a row. SO...

WELL DONE BOYS!!

Leaf fans will never accept a legit rebuild. (like Edmonton) And that is why they will never win a Cup during Detroit's next 20 years of playoffs.

Everything eventually cycles back around.

In the 17 years from 1967 to 1983, the Red Wings only made the playoffs twice.

They've had a remarkable run, but eventually they'll cycle back to the bottom again.

2012-03-27 01:50:48 PM
The Wings are just starting to get healthy after going through a rough stretch. They have as good of a chance as anyone but having to face Nashville in the first round and possibly St Louis in the second is going to be a brutal route to take to get to the conference finals.

2012-03-27 01:59:25 PM
If you are old enough to remember what the Red Wings were like before the streak started (aka Dead things) you had plenty of reasons to drink

/I think that with Ron Duguay the Wings are going to really turn things around this year

2012-03-27 01:59:43 PM
Good on the wings. For many of those years they were a fairly decent team and that run includes multiple Stanley Cups. It may have been done before by others and for longer but either way you cut it if you're a longstanding Red Wings fan they've kept you entertained in the post over these years.

I love Red Wings/Preds games. Honestly, I like seeing any of the top 4 Central teams play each other (Blues/Preds tonight woo!).

Those two though, some damn good hockey and a series will be most entertaining.

lacrossestar83: More than half the teams make the playoffs each year.

This is true. The odds of making the playoffs in a given year are 16/30, or 53.3%.

Therefore, the odd of making it two years in a row are 28.4% (0.533*0.533).

By the same logic, the odds of making it 21 years in a row are 0.533^21, which works out to 0.00018%. Or about 2 out of a million.

(Assuming a league that stays constant 30 teams with 16 playoff spots).

Yeah I know titles are the be-all, end all, but plenty of teams would kill just to make the playoffs 50% of the time.

To add to the fire, there are only TWO teams that have not made the playoffs since the lockoout.

Toronto Maple leafs
Florida panthers. (currently in 3rd place and leading their division and making the playoffs this year)

And everybody else in the West is damn happy that one of those teams will be gone in the first round.

Speaking of Preds/Blues tonight, what line has Radulov been skating on? It's going to be interesting to see if that locker room is going to jell in time for the playoffs.

My post was mostly intentionally inflammatory because fark the Red Wings, but I do appreciate that streak.
I just wiki'd it, and it turns out that they used to have 16 of 21 teams qualify, but I believe that was before the streak in question started.

Despite your antipathy towards my team, I have to say that I have a special place in my heart for Kings fans thanks to them taunting the Twilight fans camped out for the "Breaking Dawn, Part 1" premiere while on their way to and from the Staples Center.

Plus I've got a feed in which we can still hear the Devils commentators talking to each other during replays and heading to commercial breaks.

Chico Resch just needed to be told how to pronounce the name of one of Chicago's players.
