star_topology: robodog: Partially hydrogenated coconut oil is high in both saturated and trans fat aka it's about the worst form of fat.

There's your problem. Go virgin. Why would you eat anything "partially hydrogenated," I mean wtf does that mean?

As for fats in general, I keep it simple:

Coconut oil, olive oil, bacon fat (FTW)

dodecahedron: robodog: star_topology: oldernell: Most commercial popcorn is popped in coconut oil, which is one of the worst.

Is that a blanket statement in reference to taste or overall health?

Either way, false.

Partially hydrogenated coconut oil is high in both saturated and trans fat aka it's about the worst form of fat.

That's why you want to get the extra virgin kind, which is one of the healthiest fats you can eat. The main saturated fat in it is Lauric acid, a medium chain fatty acid that is only found more plentifully in human mothers' milk.

These. And hardly any commercial popcorns use coconut oil...

I was more incorporating all of the toppings for popcorn OR a potato in my example of toppings.

Not that you haven't given us some ideas for the week's snacking.

No. I don't think so. Coconut oil is both reasonably good for you in some ways and also very expensive. Most popcorn is going to be popped in soy or canola oil.

pute kisses like a man: soo... are antioxidants even good for you anyways? like really good for you?

According to the USDA, a lack of antioxidants in your diet could lead to problems but there is no proof that additional antioxidants would have any benefit.

So they are good for you, but not to the extent that the people selling the products seem to suggest.

As a side-note, that stupid Acia berry isn't any better for you than a raspberry. It just sounds exotic.

It's a grain. It's been mutated through selective breeding for 6,000 years to make giant tasty seedpods that are awesome covered in butter and chili powder.

MaudlinMutantMollusk: dletter: Popcorn is the same thing at potatoes or a number of other foods.

It isn't the food itself that is bad for you.... it is how 90% of the people eat the food (with butter, sour cream, seasonings, etc, on the food).

Eating plain popcorn is a good way to feel full and not get very many calories, if you are eating PLAIN popcorn.

Butter, maybe... but sour cream on popcorn?

/dude... that's just wrong

I was out of butter once and tried melting cream cheese on some popcorn. Cream cheese replaced butter on bagels and toast, why not popcorn?

Because cream cheese doesn't liquify. Microwaving cream cheese only serves to piss it off and turn it into a coagulated stringy mass of pulsing goo.

Sour cream on popcorn doesn't sound half bad though.

In another surprising finding, the researchers discovered that the hulls of the popcorn -- the part that everyone hates for its tendency to get caught in the teeth -- actually has the highest concentration of polyphenols and fiber.

I'm not going to go into a great amount of detail here, but... evidence suggests those hulls aren't digestible.

Wasn't there something on Fark a while back that consuming high doses of antioxidants increased the lung cancer risk in people already at risk for lung cancer? Either way, antioxidants are supposed to mop up the free oxygen radicals in your blood. Unfortunately your immune system also used free radicals to kill crap. Over consuming antioxidants could/would lead to a weakened immune system.

The expectation of the kids being hyper causes the parents to presume and enable them being hyper.

Double-blind studies show no sugar-associated hyperactivity increase when kids eat sugar-containing vs sugar free foods.

As someone said, kids are just hyper sometimes because they are kids.

craigzy: as with most things, adding [images.quickblogcast.com image 320x480] makes popcorn delicious

I use Tabasco when cooking popcorn in the big kettle. You just have to be careful not to be leaning over the pot when you put it in, the steam becomes pepper spray.

Bonus of using hot sauce, make the popcorn feel hot like right after popping long after it has reached room temperature while you are eating it. Hot in the mouth not in the hand.

So, you're pretty much stating that fat is bad for you, right?

LOL

Hi, the 80's called. They want their nutritional hypotheses back. Where the fark have you been? So, nutrition is as simple as limiting/eliminating a macronutrient. Right? Forgetting the fact that your entire NERVOUS SYSTEM is pretty much made of fat. But yeah, fat's bad. Yup, we don't need it for manufacturing hormones or anything, either. Wow.

Excess adipose tissue on our bodies is bad. But eating things that are comprised of Fat is not the enemy. Refined sugars and flours, dehydrogenation vegetable oils, frankenfoods, and crap-in-a-box in general? There's your enemy. But you should listen to ConAgra, Kellog's, Nestle, and General Mills. They've obviously got your best interest at heart. Best of luck with that.

It means that the oil has been hydrogenated. Which means that hydrogen atoms were attached to the lipid chains to change the consistency.

But that fat will signal your brain that you're full a whole lot faster than a bag of chips (and the feeling of satiation will be longer) , chocolate or cookies. Fat might make you fat if you eat to much of it, but it has a build in fail safe. Unless you've been pigging out for years and conditioned your brain to ignore the signal you should be better of eating a few hands full of nuts an acai berries than eating loads of low fat foods and snacking in between because you feel hungry.

No, but I'm yet to find an oil application in the kitchen for which it doesn't deliver the goods. However, for us bacon is usually a weekend morning thing and popcorn is a weeknight deal.

Another tip: I've not had any success with cutting the recipe, so no matter how much we want popcorn, our batches are the same size.

I will hand pop a half cup of kernels on the stove in 3tbspoons of oil. Usually corn or canola. Then spread the popped corn on to a cookie sheet and season with Lawry's Seasoned salt and fresh ground pepper. Then I will grate some fine aged Parmesan or some very sharp cheddar. Bake for a few minutes. NOM NOM NOM!
