I'm a little surprised that the Chinese government put up with them. I know this is a private company and all, but someone with enough money to put up a skyscraper can buy a local pol or two.

When they built the Three Gorges Dam they basically just said GTFO to a metric fark ton of people.

2012-03-26 12:00:30 PM
And those skyscrapers will never be occupied. China is building ghost towns for the sake of building. There is no demand.

2012-03-26 12:05:07 PM
This reminds me of when Bill Brasky said let's go to a bar and led us to an empty lot. He sat down right in the middle of it and said "this is the place." We waited there with him for two years, and sure enough, they built a bar on that very spot. We drank there the whole night, and then Brasky burned the place down, just for closure."

The version I heard:

"So one night, Brasky and I decided to go out for drinks. We drove around for two hours and couldn't find a bar. So Brasky pulls us into a vacant lot, and we waited there for a year. And sure enough, they built a bar around us. Brasky took one drink, and burned the place to the ground. Over the roar of the flames, I heard him say 'Always leave places the way you found them!'"

Not if they build them with substandard building codes (likely) they may be ready to fall down by the time they are ready to be used. A lot of towers made in the 80s in the US are being abandoned because of substandard materials.

antidisestablishmentarianism: Now Disney can recoup the money lost on John Carter.

Man, i don't know why they lost so much money. John Carter is hands down the best movie out so far this year. Seems like every year the movies that suck the most get the best box office draw and the movies that rock get the worst draw. Two things I think cause this. I am too old and don't understand the shows that the generations behind me like. The second is that the new movies and reality shows are a measure of the stupidity of America. Idiocracy is imminent.

Well the beauty of putting in a dam is YOU don't have to MAKE them move. The rising water level forces the issue all on its own. Pictures of a holdout sitting on a roof don't look so heroic, you look like an idiot out of one of the forgettable, unfunny Monty Python skits.

Am I the only old person here?

Nope, it's what I came in here to mention.

Once upon a time there was a real life example of this, here in Milwaukee, downtown, on 8th street very close to the Marquette Interchange. It was the former home of Cyril Colnik, a local genius wrought iron artist ("Blacksmith" doesn't do him justice. Google him.), his daughter wouldn't sell the house, and it found itself surrounded on three sides by an ugly 1960s office building. After she died, they tore it down, and now it's a parking lot.

It's a pity. It was a beautiful little Italianate cottage.

I agree. Aside from some very clunky exposition at the beginning and middle, it was the best film of its kind that I've seen in a long time. Struck the right balance between seriousness and humor, felt like a real adventure rather than an action slog, and was fun. I'm disappointed it did so poorly.

It does not take very long before a building to become uninhabitable due to lack of maintenance. A small rain leak here and there that goes unresolved for a few years will put untold amounts of mold into interior materials. Or, in the case of concrete structures, imperfect sealing and unresolved leaks could corrode the rebar and interior steel to the point the building may have be torn down, or significantly rebuilt.

At the very least, if these buildings are to ever be occupied they will require a lot of rehabilitation.

Yowza! Those peeps held out for three years and ended up with a new dowtown apartment and over $500,000. I think the couple in tfa is trying to do the same.

Half a mil is a LOT of money to have in China (unless you're one of the super rich with connections to the Government. See, communism does work).

In the U.K half a mil in $ is just over £300,000. That's not enough to get a (decent sized) 3 bedroom house in London.

I love this gem from the comments:

Just build the skyscrapers underneath. ;D

Seriously, I would love to have my house rebuilt on top of a skyscraper. :D

EvilEgg: I'm a little surprised that the Chinese government put up with them. I know this is a private company and all, but someone with enough money to put up a skyscraper can buy a local pol or two.

ShawnDoc: So, does this happen a lot in China? Or is it the same couple/house every time this shows up on Fark?

Amos Quito: lohphat: And those skyscrapers will never be occupied. China is building ghost towns for the sake of building. There is no demand.

Instant Detroits?

When China's bubble finally bursts it's going to make the current "difficult economic times" (TM) like a farking walk in the park. I particularly love the segment with the property developer that basically admits it's all a scam...as they interview him in the minuscule flat that he shares with 8 other people. Fark.

This predates Up. They should sue Disney.

fact is they move if you give them more money, sadly no other thing, last standing normally get more

cman: No references to Herbie Rides Again? Fark I am disapoint

I was scrolling looking for references to a Herbie movie and the only mention is you looking for references. It's older then "Up", "Batteries Not Included", hmmm, don't know about the age of the Bugs Bunny one though.

It's old...like 1950's old.

When they built the Three Gorges Dam they basically just said GTFO to a metric fark ton of people.

No, apparently. ;-)

I'm with you guys.

Get off my lawn, you kids with your loud music and baggy pants.

Ditto. I say we toss out all the young 'uns and take over the joint.

'cept the chicks. They can stay.

Who is with me?

Am I the only old person here?

Finally!

I was getting scared, seriously for a moment I thought Batteries not Included was from Disney which baffled me a little. Good to see we are not the only ones.

//And now I got the plot of Up completely spoiled, thanks Fark.

I'm guessing you have not seen the movie.

csb time

Chris Ford of Pixar came to the local JC for a lecture. Left brain and right brain: the marriage of art and technology. It was really interesting and Up was showcased. He showed the entire production view of a Pixar production from beginning to end.

Man! Talk about a lot of work. Geez. And their end product shows it.

They have the left brainers/right brainers in their respective sides of the building and they meet in the middle.

They had problems with the Mac setting it up for the presentation screen and the Mac screen. Notes on one and the presentation on the other. Someone asked the audience for help and my daughter volunteered me. I eventually got it working for them.

/enjoyed it very much
//the movie and the lecture

Trance750: moops: leonel: Am I the only old person here?

Nope, I saw Batteries Not Included in the theater when I was a kid.

Remember when we used to go to the movie theater instead of torrenting movies?

Hell, I am old enough (barely) to remember drive-ins

Heck. I saw Elephant Walk and The Vikings with Kirk Douglas at the drive-in.

Grew up in those things. Loved 'em.

csb

I went to the snack bar alone when I was around seven or so. Came back to the car and climbed in. I noticed my sister was not there. Two people were staring at me from the front seat. I didn't know them.

Turns out I got into the wrong car. Same make and color as ours but it was a few more down.

Oops!

beta_plus: Is it true the owners are martial arts experts? I heard that the contractors sent thugs to beat them up and found out the hard way that they did not think their cunning plan the whole way through.

/would make the best kung-fu movie ever

I think that movie just came out (pops).

All actors are top martial artists, so the plot and acting are paper thin, but the action is brutal and nonstop.

Well the beauty of putting in a dam is YOU don't have to MAKE them move. The rising water level forces the issue all on its own. Pictures of a holdout sitting on a roof don't look so heroic, you look like an idiot out of one of the forgettable, unfunny Monty Python skits.

Did they get the ring out of the rolltop desk?

Pretty sure Bugs Bunny was Warner Brothers, not Disney, failmitter. The specific short in question is Homeless Hare.

Ugh. Because if there's one thing Portland needs, it's more unaffordable yuppie housing in a city that largely makes $10/hour.

Isn't there also a story about some home owners that refused to sell their house and property to Disney in Orlando so Disney built all around their place? I vaguely remember this actually happening in DisneyWorld.
