(WRCB)   Latest anti-immigrant bill in Georgia would make it illegal for them to get (gasp) sewer services. Yeah, that'll teach 'em to sneak across the damn border   (wrcbtv.com) divider line 150

So they'll have to dump their waste in the countryside like a corporation? :P

Sounds like the bill doesn't like legal immigrants, either.

2012-03-26 08:58:09 AM
That shouldn't have any unintended consequences, seems like a good idea.

2012-03-26 08:58:32 AM
Guess raw sewage seeping into the water table is better than those dirty illegals. Cause you know, they are still going to shiat places.

You have got to be kidding me. Do these morons want outbreaks of pestilence?

Before we get to any civil rights issues... that just sounds like more work than it's worth. What are they going to do, send a plumber to every house to ask them for their proof of citizenship or green card?

It's Georgia. No one will notice the difference.

I have a hard time feeling sorry for them if they came across illegally. However, they come because they are hungry so again I don't blame them.

So, is this a poop thread now?

Or, you know, we could just pass laws that heavily fine corporations for hiring illegals, and even more so for knowingly hiring them, placing the burden on those benefiting from the cheap labor and removing the incentive to come to this country illegally.

Oh, I'm sorry; not racist enough, and doesn't allow the ignorant to place blame on a lower social caste. Keep in mind, the jobs that illegals do are among the few that can't be shipped overseas.

not just corporations, but everybody.

Nice policy of deterrence. I'm sure the people writing these laws miss the good ol' days when you could just 'encourage' people you didn't want in your state to go elsewhere by beating, burning, hanging.

Or we could go with the free market solution: open up the borders and not care about citizenship when filling positions. Eliminating their 'illegal' status would take away a lot of the exploitative nature of the work they're willing to fill, and employers would be forced to choose based on the quality of the worker instead of how little they're willing to take under the table.

Yeah, but plumbers charge pretty high rates, last I checked. Maybe less in Georgia because it's a "right to work" state.

Georgia already did that last year. There was a shortage of people available to bring in the crops in south Georgia last fall.

Also, it's obvious subby didn't read the whole article, or just chose to ignore the last sentence.

Ban them from using traffic lights and stop signs too. I can't see why they should benefit from public safety measures.

"Loudermilk said that those were unintended consequences, and that an amendment was likely that would remedy them."

Um, what were the intended consequences? Simply to drive illegal aliens out of the state? The thing is, I think this will work. Fields will go unplanted, crops unharvested, the cost of filling low skill jobs will rise and the quality of work fall, and you know whose fault it will be?

N0LABAMBA'S!

We already do that if its illegal for them to get drivers licenses... Well, technically anyway.

I could explain the purpose of this bill and what it would actually accomplish fairly easily, but really I can sum it up... Do you want to live anywhere you can't get sewer services? No, you don't, you will pack up and leave.

Winner winner chicken dinner. If you have no felony convictions and a clean TB test, welcome to America.

But it won't happen, because capitalism is about treating capital preferentially relative to labor. By making the borders opaque to labor but transparent to capital, the market is distorted and capital is valued artificially highly.

Have you actually been to the places where a lot of these people are coming from? Frequently they have outhouses, with warnings about drinking or using any of the water within a certain radius of that. Somehow, I don't think it's going to be as big as a deterrent as you think it will be especially if it means they'll be making more money than they would back home.

2012-03-26 09:26:04 AM
This could be another attempt at a large infra-structure construction scam. Often there is no direct shiut-off for a sewer line and the service is calculated based on water-in rather than waste out. They would have to retro-fit millions of line$$$....$$$

sprawl15: Equilibrium is always attained, in the long run.

An equilibrium with the billions of people that have no clean water and live on a dollar a day would mean a giant reduction in our quality of life. It'd be better if all the people that advocate turning this nation into the 3rd world would just go pick a third world nation and move there.

You do realize that such a change would not be sudden and immediate, right? The primary incentive to use illegal labor is the fact that employers don't have to work within the bounds of regulation. With that taken away, there would no longer be a wealth of jobs available for backwater people from the ass end of some other country. It's no different than cracking down on employers - the theory is that without available jobs, illegal immigration will decrease. Either that theory is just as fundamentally flawed, as illegal immigration is primarily motivated by something other than jobs, or that motivation will serve to balance out immigration far before we hit a 2 billion US population.

You're not suggesting that people illegally immigrate just for our wonderful sewage system, I hope.

With 7 billion people on the planet and many living in terrible conditions there would be more than just jobs that would bring people here. That scene from lord of war where those people dismantle the plane for scrap, that would be America.

2012-03-26 09:45:30 AM
Yeah this will be terrible. This will probably end up being worse than the plummeting unemployment rate in Alabama and Oklahoma after they cracked down on illegal scab labor.

Save us from the scourge of falling unemployment in the middle of a depression.
