The only time I tried to use my Ipad as a camera was when an alligator was sunning itself on the bank next to the pond...that's by our house.

Even the alligator looked at me like I was a tard.

3. Self Mirror Shot

A girl could hide a lot behind an iPad.

The iPad is retarded as a camera - it's less portable and has lower resolution than most modern phone cameras. Why the hell would you want to carry it around for photography?

Also, were are the camera glasses like Spider Jerusalem's? Why are they not more popular? All I see are the crappy gimmicky stuff.

If you are going to use a big-assed camera, do it right:

If reasons = places then this headline does make sense, but the article still sucks.

Because it's got a crappy camera? I'll use mine to grab a quick photo of something fleeting, but it's definitely not my first choice.

Missing from the list: because the iPad camera sucks.

Seriously... what is it? A 1.0 MP camera or less? I haven't see pictures look that grainy since that Sony camera that used floppy disks. What was that... 1999 or so?

For all of the "cool factor" of an iPad and what it can do, Apple went to the bargain bin with the camera(s) on that thing.

The new one has a 5.0MP camera that actually isn't terrible. I still don't get why anybody would want to use it as their primary camera, though. I mean, we've all got cellphones, so let's get real.

Ugh, we do camera phones still not have good zoom lenses.

Tablet makers really should focus more on the front-facing camera than the rear. If you use the cameras at all, it'll probably be for video chat.

Don't. The iPad 2 has a crappy camera. I has one, I has a sad.

One thing I have heard (and I have no idea if it is the actual reason) is that the resolution on the front facing portion of camera phones and tablets is kept intentionally low so as to include the widest range of broadband connections possible for video chat. If you are streaming a 10mp video over the internet it would choke both connections.

I can see that but can't we have software auto change the resolution to factor in if you are on wifi or on 3g/4g? I mean that isn't hard tech.

The person behind you now can see the view that you're blocking. Win-win.

I'm guessing compressing the image down in real time may be a bit processor intensive? I really don't know. It's just what I've heard and very well could be bunk.

The iPAD would seem to be horrible to take a picture with. For one thing - and it's something I see even P&S shooters do - you have to hold the iPad pretty far away to be able to compose a shot, and that would lead to less stability. And pressing a button on the screen would invariably lead to shake.

I shudder when I see someone holding their camera an arm's length away from their face as if it's covered the in the Plague. Here's a hint: if all you have the LCD display to go by, at least bring it up to your face and lock you elbows. Give the camera a fighting chance to take a decent picture.

If the list doesn't contain "because you'll look like a farking twerp", it fails.

I see. Subby fails, because the list shows "where not", not "why not".

Is 1 - 10 "It's a stupid ass way to take pictures"?

If not, this article is invalid.

2012-03-26 01:20:39 PM
What's the big deal?

2012-03-26 01:26:45 PM
1. Awkward form factor - reasonably well demonstrated in this article
2. terrible light and color balance
3. insufficient pixel depth for printing or any real high resolution work
4. terrible in low light
5. lens covering easily scratched
6. terrible macro support
7. insufficient pixel depth for decent digital zoom
8. camera app STILL loads too slow, cutting down on opportunities for candids
9. no timer
10. guy in the background of that beach shot has a really big head

2012-03-26 01:40:04 PM
Here's a solution for the no timer and camera shake issues:

How is this different than taking a crappy shaky/blurry photo with your phone? One's a bit bigger but the difference is minor.

I enjoy the heck out of my iPad, but I can't imagine ever using it to take pictures or video regularly. A) It looks really stupid when you do it; B) The camera just isn't that good; C) It's not comfortable at all; and D) It looks really stupid when you do it.

That's what amuses me about the high-powered photo- and video-editing apps that are being published for the iPad. It doesn't make sense to me. I don't think many people are going to use the iPad a lot take serious photos or videos, and the other option is to move media from another camera on to the iPad, edit it, then move it back off. That sure would be a fun workflow to do on a regular basis.

One of the first things I noticed when I got my IPad for Christmas was that the camera was lousy. Was worried mine was defective. It's OK in a pinch, but by no means should it be used as your main camera. The video camera, however, works great for Skype or FaceTime.

My HTC Incredible S has a better camera than my Toshiba Thrive. In fact, the camera on my HTC is possibly one of the best cameras I've ever owned since my Canon AE-1 Programmable. I'm amazed at how easily I can take photographs, using only tools completely native to the phone and end up with results in minutes that would take me hours in the darkroom with my old film cameras.

The camera on my Toshiba Thrive is mediocre. I could probably take some decent photos with it but it would require lots of tweaking afterwards but I can't imagine a situation where I would ever rely on it for photography. My cellphone practically never leaves my side so it's hard to think of a situation where I would have my Thrive but not my phone.

Of course what would really be nice is if someone would come up with a digital camera that fits inside a regular 35mm film camera so I could use my AE-1 and all its attachments and toys and features to take digital photography. There was a vapourware product in the late 1990s called iFilm but it never came to be (and it's stats would be completely laughable now adays). I'm surprised nobody ever picked up the ball on that one.

Happened to me in India. There was this really weird looking Praying Mantis that looked half bug, half Klingon and when I was taking a picture of it with my digital camera in macro setting it launched itself at me. I screamed like a little girl and dropped my digital camera.

If we could just get people to quit shooting video in portrait mode, I'd be happy.

Because if there's anything more worthless on a beach than an ipad, it's an ipad for taking pictures on said beach.

I'll just wait to get home to see wtf I've taken a picture of, I suppose.

All that I had was "it's extremely easy to steal a huge tablet being held up in one hand."

Still awaiting nine more reasons.

2012-03-26 05:25:18 PM
It's a tablet, not a camera. Kind of like phones. Not designed to have cameras. They are handy for that WTF moment where a camera is unavailable. I'll stick to my SLR for normal camera things.

2012-03-26 05:34:05 PM
I just want an app that would allow me to control my Canon dslr with my phone or tablet the same way i can with my laptop.

2012-03-26 05:35:35 PM
Okay someone needs to explain this to me becuase I have a first gen camaraless ipad (and I like it that way).

I was under the impression that ipads now come with TWO cameras. (one on the back and one on the face). So why does anyone need to use a mirror for self-portrait shots? Why not just use the "web cam" camera for self portraits?
