I spent last week drinking local Colorado beers. The only place better is Oregon.

Just spent a wknd drinking Pyramid Apricot on a warm spring day in Houston. I enjoyed it, FWIW.

I spent a lot of time drinking beer in Bend last time I went to Smith Rocks to climb.

"Most Breweries Per Capita" is rather an easy title when your population is, like, 25...

FTFA: It's also a souvenir that will go really nicely with pulled pork.

Sounds like they've got the beer angle pretty well covered, but I'd wager that folks in Oregon don't know anything about pulled pork.

mmm. Bend is perfect, the beer is delicious, and the sun always shines.

I went on a ski trip to Bend when I was sixteen. Lost my virginity there. Worth all the bend jokes :)

I love the breweries in Oregon! hit up Deschutes, rogue, and Lucky Labrador ... i love having a dark beer on nitro!

I thought I'd lose weight when I moved to Portland what with all the hippie granola crap here. Instead I've gained 7lbs due to awesome beer. I also found a cider bar, nothing but awesome ciders. Only one in the States. So much good beer and food in Oregon!

/favorite brewery in Oregon: Double Mtn in Hood River... So good

Ahh yes, good ole Bend... come for the beer, stay for the meth (and the crazies, of which there are a lot).

/glad my stay in that town was brief and that I got out with my sanity intact

San Diego would give Bend a run for its money. Between California and Oregon, the amount of great beer brewed is staggering.

/Something about hops and their other famous cousin in the family excel in these parts
//Would love to tour Oregon brews some day... Fishing and good beer...

I had bbq at my Oregon wedding. Paired with Mirror Pond, of course. It was delish, thankyouverymuch, and I managed to keep my dress bbq sauce-free.

Oregonians certainly know how to do bbq better than California and Washington, FWIW.

Love for the Black Butte Porter here too. Just moved to the Portland area a month ago - so many beers to try! Looks like Bend will be a long weekend trip sometime soon!

2012-03-26 02:23:12 AM
Not like there's a whole hell of a lot else to do in Bend.

It's sort of like everything between Sacramento and Portland, in that respect (excepting Ashland, where getting stoned regularly is also an option).

FTFA: It was when the 20-something guest-of-honor in a beer-saturated bachelor party aboard the Cycle Pub mooned a passing limo that Bend really proved that, if anything, it's not boring.

For someone living here, this kind of article about Oregon is so boring and hackneyed, it sounds like one of the more overdone Portlandia sketches.

That is questionable... I've lived in both. But do think they know very little compared to some other places.

You say
Oh, come on. It's not like there's anything in the Midwest worth seeing anyway.

That may be true, but there have lots to taste. You can't say you know bbq if you've never been to Kansas, Missouri, Tennessee, or the Carolinas. Kansas City and St. Louis are tops!

I hear that Toronto does pizza better than Montreal, FWIW. : )

OK, I'll drop it... I'm sure the bbq in OR is just dandy. Especially when combined with beer.

My sister met, married and divorced a Bend guy. Anyways, it's how I was introduced to hash runs. If you don't know what they are, look it up. Fun as hell, and running trails while half-tanked is quite the adventure.

Rogue's Voodoo Doughnut Bacon Maple Ale just arrived in town. Not sure if I feel adventurous enough to pick one up.

Actually, Rogue's main brewery is in Newport. I stopped by there on a road trip up the coast. Unfortunately, we had to be back in Seattle that evening, so the drinking was limited. We did spend a ton at their shop, though.

Was it 2 Towns Ciderhouse? LOVE them so very much.

Lots of grat wine here, too. Can't get Italian food worth a damn, though.

Don't get one. Really nasty, quite the opposite of their bacon maple bar.

If you love beer and are in Portland, stop by Hopworks or one of the Lompoc pubs. Their house made beers are pretty good and they usually have one or two on nitro, some guest taps, and something cask-conditioned.

Love the beer in this town.

//also growlers are a pretty sweet deal

Hopefully you went to the brewery proper and not the pub on the 'historic' waterfront.

Tons of great stuff within a short walk from there, including the pirate mall. Arrr

Well, yeah. Nothing compares to legit bbq. My husband used to rave about a bbq place in Issaquah and when we finally went I just was like, "meh." It was chopped, not pulled, and had kind of an artificial smoke taste to it. The place we catered from was true Memphis-style and coma-inducing pork.

It may be the PNW, but you can sure bet your ass we smoke salmon better than anyone. Mmmmm.

Rogue is EVERYWHERE west of the Rockies though, so unless you're already a big fan there's a lot of other tastings you could substitute in.

Rogue makes some good beer, I'll give them that. There are easily 40 other breweries in Oregon alone that make better beer, 20 of which I could name by name and town.
I'm pretty sure John Maier shat his pants when he was asked to produce a beer with bacon juice and maple syrup.

/Oregon beer expert
//Rogue is a brewery founded by lawyers, that should tell you everything wrong with them right there.
///Bend breweries are the shiat, Deschutes is widely-known and awesome, but some of the smaller ones shine..Silver Moon, 10barrel, Boneyard, Bend Brewing Co, etc

Also fark all you Oregonians, in a playful way, Californians cook way meaner BBQ. We BBQ all year with winters this mild, fark all that rain and snow. The fact that you have so many hispanics down here probably handles the per capita bit (also you ever been to a real Mexican BBQ?) and the sheer population ensures greater variety and diversity in dishes. I have a true southern style ribs joint about 5 miles from me, a few great local BBQ places, and a half dozen Mexican barbacoa spots. One could drive less than 5 minutes in any direction and find excellent BBQ. More importantly, is the weather in the backyard permitting perpetual BBQ, thats where the real magic occurs.

/Ironically, one of the very few days of rain prevented me from grilling today
//Only half serious

I don't know about California's "mexican" bbq, but I do know about Memphis and Kansas City bbq. It is the finest in the world.

That being said, however, here in Tampa we have a large Cuban population, and they do their own thing with pulled pork which is amazing. You should try it sometime.

I figured Bend would have a lot of breweries just so people can forget they're in Bend.

Oh, wait. I'm thinking of Madras.

There's a cheapo hotel that's walking distance from the brewery. I stay there every time I go to Newport, mostly because I don't want to be driving after drinking there. The food's good too.

And it's also one of the most overrated and exhorbiantly priced real estate in the country. I liked Bend when it was still a "small" town and not goddamn clone of Aspen.

So now both of my childhood home towns have become alcohol Meccas...Bend for the beer and McMinnville for the wine. I only wish they had been summering other than utter crapholes while I lived there. (McMinnville especially)

Just started to carry the Deschutes at work {beer distributor}. The Mirror Pond is pretty good, but i'm not a big pale ale guy. I love the Black Butte Porter, Red Chair & Abyss though. They're selling pretty good here also {SW Missouri}.
