This is why I like Japanese Anime. The monsters are way better than the boring old European ones.

My mother's people loved their odd monsters...

I have decided to use the outdated Whitewolf Hengeyokai book instead of the L5R book by process of coin flip. Against these creatures I would...(flipping through the book)...(ahh, Kitsune Page 156)...(Sorcerer, Doshi)...Use Ghost Speech, find out what the hell it wants. If I don't like that then I would use Command Spirit and screw with the local businesses. Go into fox form and then run away.

As opposed to a combined Spirit+Prime Sphere effect, with maybe a jade focus? To be fair, if you use Werewolves' own Gifts, or even Hedge Magic, you can avoid the Paradox...

Yeah, because "Let's throw random shiat into variations on amorphous blob" is way better than something like a werewolf. I don't know if I should be afraid of it or make it into soup.

Spoken like someone that hasn't really looked into actual European folklore. The eastern european stuff gets especially messed up.

Yeah, I love me some anime but some of their creations are more confusing then scary. Not that western society makes better monsters.

Space Coyote (you may know her from her interpretation of The Simpsons as anime characters (new window)) began a manga called Yokaiden (new window) that was to explore many of the lesser known spirit creatures of Japanese folklore. Unfortunately, she only got 2 books published before it all went tits up. It's a shame really, as I'd argue the comic had a lot of potential.

Water spirit that lures children to be drowned. But it has a bowl of water in its head and will lose its strength if this is drained or spills. Also hate and fear metal objects/weapons, such as Tiffany Aching's frying pan.

Takashi Miike did a really interesting/weird movie called the Great Yokai War a couple of years ago. It's billed as a kid's fantasy movie, but because it's Miike don't show it to your kids unless you want to explain a bunch of stuff you can't explain.

I enjoyed it, but I think I would have enjoyed it more if I knew the stories better.

Yeah, true. The most I am familiar with are western European stuff, vampires, werewolves, gnomes, goblins trolls leprechauns etc. Maybe they are just too familiar.

I am always looking for new things, so sources welcome!

3.

One pile of skulls to decorate. One pile that is in the process, and one pile that is finished.

Duh.

You remember correctly. It's from a Japanese ceremony called Setsubun, and part of the ceremony involves throwing roasted soybeans at oni, as that is their weakness.

And while your assumption -- that Yuugi and Watermelon would be sporting some nasty blisters -- is valid, you gotta remember that you can't let yourself be held back with common sense in Gensokyo.

This website is devoted to mythical creatures from Japanese folklore (new window). It's very interesting and thorough. If you're a fan of Kwaidan, I'd suggest starting with Yuki-onna. If you're a weirdo, I'd suggest starting with the Shirime.

You left out the best part. It goes after the shirikodama, which is located in the anus. Retrieving it kills its original human owner.
