(Vimeo)   It's nice to hang out in the Space Station, looking at auroras and listening to Puccini. Wait. What was that? (around 3:20)   (vimeo.com) divider line 45

Not sure what Subby is referring to at 3:20, but around 3:27 over the left center horizon something flashes and moves off to the right before disappearing. I'd guess it's another satellite.

Or aliens.

2012-03-25 11:34:58 AM
Yeah, I saw that as well. I've seen several satellites in ISS videos like that. Just a reminder that they're not alone up there. :)

so there's no way that's just an asteroid or some space garbage? It's totally aliens??

I need more coffee.

Streetlight, naturally.

Ha. Seriously curious what that would be. That flash didn't seem right assuming it was an asteroid or other object that puts off no light of its own without atmospheric friction.

Subby here. Yes, I was being a tad imprecise with the timing. Sorry about that.

I wondered if the original flash was reflection from the solar panels on a satellite.
But then again I wondered why a satellite would have such a high relative speed.

Uhm? The earth is 26,000 miles in circumference and some of the farkers do that every 60 minutes?

There's another satellite with about the same relative trajectory at 2:05

What about 1:05, on the ground? City lights? Volcano?

Really? I thought Low Earth Orbit satellites went round in 90 minutes or so. I was talking about relative speed between the ISS and the satellite. Judging by the appearance, it looks like the ISS is overtaking a satellite in higher orbit.

You're right. In fact, there are quite a few, now that I look closely. They aren't as bright as the one at 3.27.

That's the first thing I though of. Why? I don't know.

Maybe it was the warp factor thingy that went off?

I caught more then 6 in the video, but it's around 2:40 that we see some hot satellite on satellite action. It happens at about the top quarter of your maximized screen and 2/5 of the way from the left. You briefly see a dim one trailing off to the left side of your screen while another appears for a while heading to your right. Reminded me of 2 ships passing in the night.

God, science is cool.

Yes. I'm about 90% certain that it's Piton de la Fournaise volcano on La Réunion island.

I saw that once while watching a meteor shower, just in reverse.

A point of light with the brightness of a background star and/or a satellite suddenly appeared flying in like a bat out of hell, then decelerated to a crawl against the night sky before eventually vanishing from sight.

So anyway, he's got this music out in space, and he's listening to it on his headsets, and he's just happy as a clam. And then all hell breaks loose. See, there's this whole slew of aliens out in space...

I agree the one on the right was La Réunion, but I'm fairly certain those were city lights and not lava flows. Piton de la Fournaise hasn't erupted since December 2010. The orange lights to the left are those of Mauritius. (The combined population of the two islands is almost 2 million, and it would make sense most of the lights would be around the coastline)

The video is time-lapse, right? Or at least sped up? Otherwise they'd be going around the earth once per minute at that rate. Plus, you could see the northern lights quickly wavering back and forth like a fluid... I'm pretty sure they don't move that fast.

That means that other satellite was actually going much slower than we're lead to believe from the video.

Who would want to visit us here? I know that If I was an alien and able to leave I sure as hell would.

Somebody pause and screenshot at about 3:24 and tell me the star cluster in the middle doesn't look like jaws.
