This. Plus, it's a far better material to make Ethanol with, grows in more marginal soils so it opens up better agricultural area and returns more nutrients to the soil, and planting HEMP will cross pollinate with Marijuana, reducing THC levels.

Oh, and HEMP != Marijuana. Duh.

actually, it probably wouldn't burn very well at all. if its mixed with lime, I suspect it would be more fire resistant than similar structures built out of wood.

Wood has a better fire rating than steel and concrete. Steel will soften quickly in a blaze, and concrete will become weak and crumble, even reinforced (by steel...) concrete... but wood will maintain structural integrity at high temperatures much longer, even if it's on fire.

Wood burns, but a burning wood beam will not fail as quickly as concrete or steel. A blaze will destroy all three materials, but wood provides more time before your ceiling falls in.

BlippityBleep: you can't build more than 3-4 stories with only wood.

No shiat. You find an appropriate material for the application, even for something as simple as vertical vs. horizontal beam. I know fire rating is complicated, but "wood burns= stupid construction material" is a misconception. Wood is a valuable weight bearing material. Meanwhile, structural integrity and 20 minutes vs. 60 is not guaranteed just because a material does not combust or smoke.

Other fun facts: If you built a pizza oven out of concrete, it would collapse- instead, you would use brick. Reinforced concrete cracks and crumples in less than 100 years as the steel inside rusts and expands. Un-reinforced concrete can last millenia with far less matainence. We still have original un-reinforced concrete roads and structures from ancient Rome to the modern U.S.

State and federal laws do not make a distinction between varieties of cannabis used for clothing or building materials and varieties used for more psychoactive purposes, so producing hemp is prohibited. Importing hemp, however, is legal, and - Whoa, now, hold it right there. Here we have one of the most widely useful crops in the world, and our laws allow us to use it, and to buy it from other countries, but prohbit us from producing it ourselves. That's just stupid.

MacG: So how come you pot heads all have such a boner for hemp? I mean, are you as excited about carbon nanotubes?

Yes.

To be honest, haven't smoked weed in well over a decade, but the industrial/commercial uses for hemp products is extremely well documented. It amazes me that in this day and age our government still outlaws the growth of industrial hemp.

As for carbon nanotubes, well, the applications for them are growing by the day, but it's still a relatively young field of research and we're still developing more efficient manufacturing methods. As far as I know, however, their uses are far different from how we could use hemp products, so I'm not sure why you mention them in the context of hemp construction materials. Perhaps they could be used for the construction of buildings, I don't really know, but I haven't heard of that application yet.

I would love to take my Congressman (John Boehner, sadly) on a tour of some of the farmland in my area, land that in any given year that can be counted on to lose half or more of its yield because of widely varying weather conditions. Some of it floods, some of it is so porous beneath the topsoil that it dries out far too rapidly, and much of it is ideal for growing hemp, switchgrass, or other non-traditional crops. But the farmers who own the land instead plant corn, every year, knowing that they will be subsidized for planting corn, and if the crops fail due to weather, they'll be compensated for their loss by the government. Of course Mr. Boehner has no interest in proposing legislation that would change the status quo, unless someone can show him how we can use this land to grow liquor trees and booze bushes.

MacG: So how come you pot heads all have such a boner for hemp? I mean, are you as excited about carbon nanotubes?

Actually, yes. But I am not a pothead and I don't even drink.

Here's the difference between hemp and carbon nanotubes: One can cheaply and easily expand production by a massive amount and has numerous applications in multiple fields, one is an interesting building material that (to my knowledge) is still quite expensive to make in large quantities.

Yes, the pot heads just wanna get high. Yes, there are lots of people who only jump on the hemp bandwagon because of marijuana.

BUT

The fact remains there are numerous uses for it, numerous reasons to legalize it, and literally NO good reason to outlaw it.

Take a look at this thread, what reasons are listed why marijuana is bad and hemp is "teh dangerous"? Every one of them boils down to "stupid potheads wanna get high, stupid hippies, fark them." I get that "legislative inertia" means opposing a change unless there is a good reason, but the "stupid potheads" have GIVEN good reasons. Saying you don't want them to get high is fine but they can still get drunk and smoke a whole field of tobacco so it's not good enough. By the numbers federal cannabis prohibition only makes sense if you are taking payoffs from the corn lobby or the prison industry.

No, it shouldn't be free for all and unregulated, in fact it should be taxed even higher than alcohol and cigarettes, but let the little stoners have their fun and use the money to pay for something useful instead of taking loans from China to hunt the little stoners down.

It works in theory and has worked in practice.

Because pot heads are silly people.

There are even silly potheads who are not "hemp will save the world!1!!" People who can articulately explain the logical, rational reasons why it is silly that hemp is illegal, and the good that can come from its use.

I'm not saying pot should be legal or not. I'm not saying hemp could not be more useful. Hemp mania is a displaced argument for legalizing pot.

I am saying hempheads in my experience are potheads droning on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on about HEMP!!!!
