Alonso pits; Perez doesn't and is up by 12 seconds over Hamilton.

Perez is in now, leaves behind Alonso.

We've just got everyone on slicks, and light rain in the paddock.

Tsrwedge: We've just got everyone on slicks, and light rain in the paddock.

Now a downpour needs to hit and we'll have a nice finish.

Perez is gaining on Alonso. Made up two seconds already on him.

Chupacabra Sandwich: I am absolutely amazed how fast the pit crews are.

They're a tenth of a second slower than last year - F1 decided to switch back to compressed air from helium this season. The helium made the pneumatic guns a hair faster, but it was waaay too expensive and since everyone was using it, there wasn't an advantage anymore.

2012-03-25 06:28:46 AM
Perez is gaining something like 1.2s per lap on Alonso; was 7 and change out when he left the box, now 3.9

2012-03-25 06:29:26 AM
I almost wonder if Alonso isn't carrying some drama in that car apart from its normal craptacularity.

Well, one thing is for certain, this could be a very odd season.

King Something: 2.4

1.4 seconds closer and he can open up the wing.

I'll take that over everything having been decided by Suzuka last season.

And Perez took 13 too wide. He's still in P2, down by 5.2 with 5 laps to go.

In all seriousness, fark you Sauber, for taking team orders from Ferrari.

Least favorite moment of the race so far: "He's driving like a man Perezed!"

Groan...

The announcers seem amazed that this Alonso fellow is winning. Why?

The car is crap. Without the rain, he's 5th at best.

Because Ferarri had a "bad" car in normal conditions but looks like that doesn't mean much when running in weather.

The Ferraris aren't good cars this year. In fact they at times look on the very edge of being bad.

Vettel and Button both hit KAR's car, will not get points today :(

/when was the last race they both started and neither got points?
//also, when was the last time without a Red Bull on the podium? Webber is in P4, 5 and change behind Hamilton

I love it, chunks of tire on the track? No problem. In NASCAR a hot dog wrapper blows across the track they bring out a yellow.

Pastor's out.

So close to points, yet so very far.

Gutted for Perez. What a race though!

Vettel's out.

Alonso wins, Perez second, Hamilton third.

Alonso, you got handed a win by di Montezemolo. You don't deserve to celebrate, and Ferrari remain the giant bundle of cocksuckers they've always been.

If Perez didn't bobble that one turn, we're likely trying to wrap our heads around a Sauber winning a race.

Chupacabra Sandwich: What are the fundamental differences between F1 and Indycar

One is a parade where the winner is determined on the first turn. The other is Indy Car. Also, Indy Car can field more than six cars at IMS.

foo monkey: One is a parade where the winner is determined on the first turn. The other is Indy Car. Also, Indy Car can field more than six cars at IMS.

The leader at turn one finished third. The winner started from P8 and second place from P9. Yes, all determined from turn one.

Tsrwedge: WhyteRaven74: Tsrwedge: F1 is probably, what, quarter again as fast as IndyCar?

Depends on the track. Keep in mind Indy cars can do 220 plus on an oval. Or they could, not sure what the new cars will do.

Well, if F1 was running Indy, they'd have much less drag and would probably destroy the IndyCars.

An F1 car couldn't competitively run on an Indy oval without an Indy set-up. Just like an Indy car couldn't run an F1 course without an F1 set-up. Comparing a car built particularly for acceleration and cornering to a car built particularly for top speed and long straightaways is fruitless.

Today was fairly rare. When it rains all bets are off and anything can happen. In the dry, barring penalties and/or stupid driving, the results are predictable and the race does resemble high-speed parade laps for the front-runners.

You know this, so why would you get upset about someone telling it like it is?

I'm normally not one for conspiracy theories, and I was a little out of it because I was up at an odd hour. But Sauber has always been a farm team for Ferrari, and Perez is on the short list to replace Massa (and judging by how tepid Felipe is driving, they may not wait to see if Kubica is ready to drive). This reeks of collusion, in a sport where corruption has always been problematic.

I could see Ferrari saying to Sauber "C'mon, second is great for you, we provide your engines... just sayin'", but the off by Perez wouldn't have been planned, and getting past Alonso would never be easy.

The only reason I don't think that is because Sauber really, really needed that showing. For pure monetary risk/reward point of view, passing would have been too much of a risk.

Yes and no. As UNC Samurai above has stated, Ferrari are a bunch of colluding assholes, so it's certainly possible that they said, "Nice engine supply you've got there, it would be a shame if something happened to it!" However, the drivers all want to win and think of the story that would have been told if Perez won. But getting past Alonso wouldn't have been easy at all, as he is regarded as one of the strongest defenders out there.

This. especially with the radio transmission right before the turn overshoot. Perez's engineer was telling him that "We need this spot"

I can't stand all the love that Varsha, Hobbs and Matchett shower upon Ferrari

For Sauber a 2nd place is much much better than competing for 1st and breaking down/going off. Sauber don't have the money behind them and need the publicity and prize money/points of a 2nd place. I wouldn't put it past Ferrari to strong arm them but there isn't a man alive in the paddock that wouldn't of done the same thing in Saubers place. This 2nd place means Sauber will be racing next season, its that simple.

I'm not disputing that, but the timing of the message and Perez's missed turn seem a little strange. Maybe I'm just reading too much into the situation.

That being said, I can't stand the fact that Alonso won. I hope that Lotus can maintain these grid positions

Uhhhh...no shiat you are.

Perez was driving at 15/10th's...after the off, he still closed on Alonzo's ass in last few corners. Perez didn't take "team orders" from a third party, he was just driving his ass off and got a bit too excited in the situation.

If he ends up with Ferrari after this season, so be it. Honestly I loved seeing an independent-run Sauber finish on the podium. My good friend is a NASCAR guy, and he barely gave a fark what was going on in NASCAR, I had him hook line and sinker into the F1 race today.

/F1 management will find a way to fark-up all the good karma after this race.

How do you define "one of the world's great race circuits?" Top 10? Top 20? Top 30? Is there anyone who would actually be outraged if it dropped off the face of the earth tomorrow? Sure, it may be the best of the Tilke era, but half of that credit goes to the weather, as we saw yesterday. There's a reason why any motorsports fan already knows New Jersey will be the better of the two US GPs.

/It's actually on okay track
