That's what I'm gathering. It did lead to what could be the best line of the season: Varsha "Why am I making excuses for Gonzales?!"

Hoping to wake up for the Honda GP @ St. Pete, but that's 9:30 AM out here. Shall we use this as the thread if we don't get an Indy thread?

I have been known to watch the GP2 race to hype myself up for the F1 race, then pass out from general boredom within a few laps of the big boys gettin' going.

Tsrwedge: Hoping to wake up for the Honda GP @ St. Pete, but that's 9:30 AM out here. Shall we use this as the thread if we don't get an Indy thread?

Sure. Of course, if I can come up with a headline sufficiently clever/trollish enough to please the admins, I'll try to make a combo thread of it and the NASCAR one, to simplify things.

Speaking of more IndyCar, somehow I'm not terribly surprised Simon Pagenaud was the fastest Honda driver. Well-kept secret from the Le Mans world; I'd be shocked if he doesn't win this year.

Chevy in the top 5 does surprise me a bit, I thought Honda was rather more on the pace than that. Lotus we all knew would suck though.

Rubens's effort did surprised me a bit as well, but losing FP1 with a transmission failure isn't going to help your efforts. Still, 14th is lower than I'd have expected.

Naw. Penske brought Chevy in, so you know they're bringing their A game.

Lotus is a disgrace.

Rephrased: That Ganassi-Honda is only 7th, 10th, and 11th is shocking. Completely agree on Lotus, though I understand they're running a bit safe until they have better supply, and they have perhaps more power to find than the other two makes when they do run at full song.

Here's hoping! Rain races are always interesting in one way or the other. Hell, it's a small miracle that HRT qualified, so anything could happen!

So Vettel is starting on the hard tires, everyone ahead of him is on the medium tires. That could make things very interesting.

It's got an interesting double straight layout along the main paddock and it almost always is threatening to rain. When it rains in Malaysia, it RAINS!

Drivers to watch for, in no particular order, Sebastian Vettel, Michael Schumacher, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton. Myself I'm a big fan of Vettel. To cheer against? Not really. Also in F1 teams are a big deal, particularly Red Bull and McLaren, though Lotus and Mercedes are also looking real good.

I'm a Jenson Button fan, personally. Schumi and Vettel are very good in the rain and Massa will spin.

Sebastian Vettel (GER, Red Bull-Renault): Two-times defending champion.
Mark Webber (AUS, Red Bull-Renault): Not as quick as he once was. The recent Red Bulls don't seem to fit his driving style.
Lewis Hamilton (GBR, McLaren-Mercedes): All or nothing driver.
Jenson Button (GBR, McLaren-Mercedes): Consistent, but fast. Not quite as fast as Hamilton, generally.
Michael Schumacher (GER, Mercedes): Seven-times world champion, but he hasn't won since 2006. Retired from 2007-2010. Aggressive, and excellent in the rain.
Kimi Räikkönen (FIN, Lotus-Renault): World champion, took a three year break to get away from F1.
Fernando Alonso (ESP, Ferrari): Two-times world champion, but the Ferrari this year isn't quick.

Looks like it's raining fairly hard, so the race will likely be a complete casino. Watch Button and Schumacher.

Anything short of a monsoon, they run. Sometimes the monsoon isn't enough to stop the race.

Imagine Vettel and Schumacher going head to head lap after lap. The greatest ever against the driver who appears could take that distinction one day.

I think that armco barrier robbed us of that when it destroyed Robert Kubica's hand.

Chupacabra Sandwich: What are the fundamental differences between F1 and Indycar

Ah, yes. Each team designs its own car... F1 is probably, what, quarter again as fast as IndyCar? In terms of sheer speed around a road course, F1 is the pinnacle of motorsport.

It's easier to ask what aren't the differences. They both use open-wheel race cars.

Also, add Kamui Kobiyashi to the list of drivers to pay attention to. He was a bit reckless his first two years, leading some to call him "Kamui Kobiyashi Maru", but as he's matured he's developed into a first-class overtaker. If he ever gets in a good car, he'll be the next Felipe Massa, minus the yips from taking a spring to the head.

Chupacabra Sandwich: Do they race with some rain or cancel if it's wet?

If a complete downpour starts before the start of the race the race director will hold off the start of the race so teams can put rain tires on the cars. If the rain gets bad after the start? Well, you'll see what happens when cars with slick tires drive on a wet track. At least until they can get to the pits to change tires. Now if the rain starts but isn't a complete deluge, they have intermediate tires, they have treads, but aren't full on rain tires. Course if the rain stops while everyone is on wet tires, then it becomes a matter of how fast does the track dry and who comes in for a tire change back to slicks.

Chupacabra Sandwich: What are the fundamental differences between F1 and Indycar

F1 cars are much faster, much more technical and much, much more expensive. I remember the only track (Montreal) that Indy Car and F1 ran in the same season, the winner, Michael Schumacher would have beaten the equivalent Indy Car winner by lapping him five times.

Depends on the track. Keep in mind Indy cars can do 220 plus on an oval. Or they could, not sure what the new cars will do.

2012-03-25 04:03:05 AM
De La Rosa will start in either the pits or not at all.

By the way, nobody who's on inters will need to use hards.

It's worth noting the Champ Cars being raced there were about 400 lbs heavier than F1 cars. Which eats up a lot of performance. Also because they're longer and a bit wider they also don't turn quite as well.

Well, if F1 was running Indy, they'd have much less drag and would probably destroy the IndyCars.

Yeah, I knew F1 was top dog. I didn't know they were that much faster though, wow.

Seems odd to me they run in pouring rain. Cool though.
