It's legal, they just have be unloaded and at the bottom of a locked filing cabinet in checked baggage, rather than 4 hidden loaded ones in your carry-ons.

And to think, I was sweating last year when I needed to check through actual declared firearms in my luggage. The whole process was surprisingly anti-climactic after all my careful preparations.

I've heard baggage with firearms is pretty much safe from the petty thievery perpetrated by TSA and baggage handlers, only because BATF gets involved when a gun goes missing. Kinda like hyenas won't mess with a kill if the lions are around.

I've even been told professional photographers will get a license, and chuck an empty magazine in with their gear, to avoid getting it all stolen.
