Because then this thread would be full of enraged fanboys screaming about how it's not really Doctor Who if the companion isn't a girl. And the Master would lose his favorite joke.

Susan regenerated is my guess. She's the perfect character to bring back for the 50th anniversary season, especially one that promises to explore the question of "Doctor Who?".

Hm...that'd be interesting. It'd show the Time War, finally, wouldn't it, and explain how he is the last of his people.

Six_By_Nine: Oh, goody. Another cutesy-poo companion.

After 40+ years, it's transcended into a trope. The Doctor has male companions (Jack, that loser kid that tried to steal future tech, Rory, Turlough, Adric, the Brigadier, Jamie, and so on), robot companions (K-9, Kameleon, Kevin (from the comics- best. companion. ever), but he always has a female companion who is significantly younger than he is.

I'm actually hoping they have this girl be an alien, though. Even if she's no more obviously alien than the Doctor, it'd be nice to have something unusual about her.

They've explained how he's the last of his people, pretty clearly- he killed them all with technobabble. And we will never see the Time War (or, arguably, we already have- "Genesis of the Daleks" was the first battle).

I was thinking more that they would explore what happened between the time he stole the TARDIS and he and Susan abducted Ian and Barbara. Rememberance of the Daleks touched on it, but you have to wonder why the Doctor and Susan were laying low in 1963, to the point that they settled down enough to have Susan enrolled at the local school.

Mad_Radhu: I was thinking more that they would explore what happened between

Sometimes I feel like the only person that doesn't want every nano-second of a character's existence chronicled and incorporated into whatever passes for the canon for that fictional universe. Nothing that occurred between the theft of the TARDIS and the Doctor's first appearance matters. It adds nothing to the character, it adds nothing to the universe, it adds nothing.

Why were they settled in 1963? Because it was a convenient plot contrivance for what started as a vaguely educational program. We don't need the back-story, and honestly, it's entirely probable that those events have been retconned out of existence anyway. In the case of "Doctor Who", history is flexible, which is part of what makes the show as long lasting as it has been- the same monsters might show up again and again, and the fact that they were exterminated entirely two years ago is irrelevant.

Susan could be chucked out of existence by the writers without ruining the consistency of the show, and "Doctor Who" is already pretty bad about digging through its archives for monsters to trot out- let's not do the same for other characters.

//This also applies to Romana.
//That said, having a Time Lord show up and not be the Master would be a nice change of pace.

How are they going to write Rory and Amy off the show? Just have them quit, or massive universe-saving hypersacrifice?

...I got that far in the post before deciding to look it up on Wikipedia. "In December 2011, the BBC's Steven Moffat confirmed that Amy and Rory would be leaving the series in 2012 in 'heartbreaking' circumstances." Okay then.

I was somehow under the impression that he was trying to give Susan a shot at some kind of normal life by staying in one spot for awhile. Then Ian and Barbara got nosy and blew it.

It's definitely a story that isn't crying out to be told, but it could give the Doctor some interesting complexity, as the whole Cartmel Masterplan was intending before the show was cancelled. Unfortunately, the Lungbarrow novel that built off of that REALLY suffered from the prequel problem of making the hero a little too special (reincarnation of a Gallifreyan that hung with Rassilon and Omega? REALLY?). If Moffatt could explore the character in his early days without totally going all Phantom Menace on us, it would make a great 50th anniversary storyline.

Mad_Radhu: reincarnation of a Gallifreyan that hung with Rassilon and Omega? REALLY?

There's some fanon that claims that he wasn't the reincarnation- he was the mysterious third that was there when Rassilon and Omega created the time vortex. I don't particularly like that idea, either.

Mad_Radhu: If Moffatt could explore the character in his early days

If they were to do it, I'd rather see bits of the Doctor's ancient past cropping up in the present. I imagine he was a scholar, like pretty much every other Time Lord, who eventually got tired of watching from afar. He wanted to go there and see things, and essentially had the sort of moment where he just snapped and broke free of the constraints society had placed on him.

There's no mystery to his past. He went from being a normal, everyday schlub to being a cosmic savior mostly because he got tired of being bored all day.

If T3knomancer had his way books would be a very quick read:

The tired, but victorious hero having defeated evil, having saved the orphanage, having rescued and sexually pleasured the damsel in distress, having explored new worlds unbeknownst to our own, and having saved countless civilizations, gave a small yawn, turned the key to the door of his smallish apartment, leaned the gore grimed Battle Axe of the Infinite Weeping Godlings; being careful to put down some newspaper so the mess of tissue and bodily fluids wouldn't stain his worn carpet. The formerly entrepid warrior, having returned to his normal life swept sweat and blood out of his eyes, picked up his mail and entered. On the way to the bathroom for a quick pee and shower, he sorted through his mail, stopping briefly by the phone to check for voicemails (there were none) then flipping on the television before ultimately just falling asleep on the couch.

*Fin*

So I'm rolling my eyes, T3k seems to be parrotting the "it's just a popcorn flick" Fark Boilerplate Argument Meme.

In response, no story needs to be told. Not a one. All stories branch and some branches are more interesting than others. The weak branches get ignored, and the interesting ones get expanded upon. If the creators of any given story see that there's fertile ground for another good tale, then why not use it? Good world crafting makes for great story telling.

Now, Lucas, et al, started well, but took it to an extreme. And if we were discussing the Star Wars universe, you're argument might be more appropriate. The extended universe can't seem to have any regular workaday people; they all were war heroes at one point or another. Which after 30 years of story telling just makes every character a hero which is just silly.

However, Dr Who has a long way to go before it turns into the Star Wars EU trap. As far as this thread goes, you just sound pissy; like you didn't have anything to say, so you copypasta'd an argument from another thread.

I'd really like her to NOT be another 21st century chick from the U.K. for once. How about a future-chick, or a girl from the 1970s? How about someone from another fricking planet?

Why does The Doctor only seem to be able to pick up 20-something girls from the greater London area these days?

And I swear to Gozer, if she turns out to be another companion with a crush on The Doctor and a dipshiat boyfriend who she is perfectly willing to cheat on if she can get some Timelord all up in her, I'll be pissed.
