All profits are reinvested in the company or shared with employees.

Wegmans isn't ass-raping their employees. I guess that is anti-Walmart.

The only problem I've ever had with Wegman's is that it's so big, and can get so busy, that there is no such thing as a quick trip to the grocery store. If you're going to Wegman's, you've got to put aside time to do it. And wear comfortable shoes, because you're going to do a lot of walking.

On the other hand, once you've set aside the time, you need to buy some food from the prepared foods concessions, grab a good table, sit down and eat. No point shopping on an empty stomach, and the foods are usually great.

As for it being the anti-Walmart... Yes, it is. But not in a snobby way. It's just a really well-run gourmet grocery store that doesn't try to market itself to the lowest common denominator... nor the highest. Its prices are reasonable and the customer service is usually excellent.

We need to get them here in Florida, especially down in the south half of the state. I've noticed that Publix isn't even trying to compete on price down here in SWFL. Bringing a Wegman's into the area would probably change that. In other places I've lived, when a Wegman's comes in, the other stores usually take notice and actually improve -- prices, service, layout, selection -- in order to compete with them.

I worked at Wegmans for 4 years...worst experience ever. On the outside, it's all pretty with the fancy sushi and organic diapers, but working there was pretty much like any other retail job. Incompetent managers that would change stores every week or would fail at even trying to run a 7-11, HR people that basically did nothing but chat on the phone with friends all day, etc. We were always shortstaffed in every department, and they refused to hire people and bring in others for openings without letting current employees have a grab at it first. As soon as Danny Wegman was supposed to come around we had to scrub everything down and make sure everything was looking good..because other times things were absolutely disgusting. Most of the stuff, like their "famed" bakery muffins came frozen in a box. Meat was labeled with the Wegmans name would be shipped in Tyson boxes. Not to mention they "stored" garbage in the back room right next to the produce, since only management could unlock the trash compactor (so it would pile up all day until someone got around to doing their job). Re-invest the money in employees? Haha. Oh yeah the $1.00 off someweird-overpriced-organic product every 6 months coupon really helped me out! Thanks for nothing Wegmans!
\ended up getting "fired" for something insignificant and ended up collecting unemployment because I really shouldn't have been according to the State
\was about to quit anyway, so it worked out as a nice "going away bonus"
\CSB.

Forgot to add about the woman who always coughed all over the food as she made people's "subs"...it was well known throughout the store (employees would always ask, did ___ work today?), and pretty disgusting. But AFAIK, she still works in the same department.

Meh, I was visiting Rochester several years ago and was amazed by the place, so I started taking pics of it with my crappy cell phone so I could share it with my friends online back home. Some goon came up to me and threw me out of the store. Some great customer relations there.

Dark ceilings make light dimmer than it needs to be. Tiled floors make for unpleasant clattering cart pushing. Why not go all out with cobblestones.

Wegmans is awesome.

Though, it does get crazy busy, as noted above.

Best time to visit is around 8 AM - they've got the fresh meats/seafood out, but the store isn't completely mobbed yet.

As an upstate NYer, I love Wegmans. Best grocery store ever.

I wish we had them here. When I'm in Whole Foods or Trader Joes, I still wish I were in Wegmans instead.

Went to Wegmans and did not think it was worthy of the hype.

2012-03-24 07:42:26 AM
Wegmans has stores in every major city in upstate NY excepting Albany. Apparently they have an agreement with Price Chopper not to compete in their home markets; Wegmans started in Rochester, Price Chopper in Schenectady.

I hate Price Chopper.

Walmart = Low, Low Prices, brings in the disgusting masses

Wegman's = Higher Prices, nice but seemingly snootier place to shop

/also I don't think you can buy a lawnmower, television, and underwear at the Wegmans, but I might be wrong been a while since I've been to one.

In the Rochester area, Wegmans are everywhere and were not a big deal

Down here in New Jersey, Wegmans are only in a few locations, mostly where the yuppies live and the ramble on how special wegmans is. Like how iPhone users can't stop talking about their stupid phone.

I once commented to one that "you know up in Rochester, Wegmans are like on every street corner, they are looked at as just another grocery store" I got a look that I just insulted her God

Wegman's store-brand products are second to none, and they have some really good deals on stuff people actually buy. They have a pretty wide and affordable selection of organic products as well. I'm a big fan.

No, they do not have an anti-compete agreement with Price Chopper, that's an Albany area rumor that has been disproved over and over again. When it makes business sense for Wegman's to make the move to Albany they will.

I'm part of a group that plays board games, we used to play at a Wegman's before we were asked not to meet there (a no group meeting rule to avoid union formulation). It was nice. A bit pricy, and after 3 years you got sick of a lot of their different things, but still, I miss going there, since there were more space an less people.

Are you saying that Wal-Mart stores have been dramatically improved and/or remodeled in the past five years and they no longer look like that?

Or is the "ancient" photo still accurate?

I think I-81 used to be the dividing line, but now I think it's just for NY. I live in Albany, but went to grad school in Ithaca and every time I'm at the grocery store, I wish it were a Wegmans.

The one around here is pretty good, but my only complaint is that the checkout aisles are a bit too narrow that the shopping carts just fit into them... if you push the cart like one half of a degree off of straight in, it will bang into something right away.

they've been completely redesigned inside. there's alot more room at the registers, and in more urban areas they've been niced up quite a bit.

for most of lower and middle class america, walmart is the only option: its cheap. plus, we dont have wegmans- and the local kroger or a dollar higher on everything, and the food lion is 2 dollars higher.

well that and they sell things that are higher quality than you'd expect for less money than you'd expect, in a place that is inexplicably pleasant to shop in...so yeah, everything Wal-mart isn't

(anybody who thinks Wal-mart is generally cheaper than their competitors doesn't know how to comparison shop)

Wegman's doesn't exist in FL, as far as I can tell. Publix, on the other hand, is awesome.

Wegman's beer prices and selection are better than anywhere else, ever. That alone would be enough.

Kindly explain then why Price Chopper has stores all over upstate but Rochester/Buffalo and Wegman's the same excepting Albany/Utica. Furthermore, how does it make business sense that Wegmans trucks pass through Albany everyday on their way to north Jersey and now Newton, MA but there's no store actually in Albany?

Wegman's Distribution:

http://www.wegmans.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StoreLocatorView?for w ardto=StoreLocatorView&value=96&langId=-1&storeId=10052&property=VIEWR ECS&URL=RedirectView&catalogId=10002&N=157&Ns=P_Name|0

Look at that map and tell me it's not weird that the capital region being completely empty isn't odd looking. And yes, i know the trucks come down the thruway this way, I see them all the time on my daily commute. It really does look like Wegmans has made a conscience decision to stay out of the area between Utica and Albany.

Here's the Pricechopper map:

http://www.pricechopper.com/StoreLocatorMap/Map_S.las?-token.S=

Stops dead in Syracuse. Spreading into Vermont instead of Rochester/Buffalo... really? I wonder why they'd do that... you really think it's not in some way because of Wegmans?

I hear the "wah wah wah" of someone who thinks the 2 chains are colluding. "Oh poor us, Wegman's hates us.". There is no hole in the market for Price Chopper to take advantage of in Western NY, Tops, Aldi's and Wegs have the market filled. Who says the trucks headed to NJ go thru Albany, 390 South makes more sense. Mass. stores fit the expansion plans of Wegs, they go where the money is, and evidently that's not in Albany.

Wah Wahs is a good store too!

I used to live really close to a Wegmans, and it was nice. My friends who worked there always seemed to like it too.
