Six degrees of burn? Was Kevin Bacon involved?

I don't think it's even possible to give someone a 6th degree burn with a lighter and a whole carton of cigarettes if you spent 2 days in the same spot.

Article fail!

The scale doesn't work like that. It's actually about 3,00 times worse. Or something.

6-degree burns? Well, I see that's been well-covered already. I'd guess the reporter misheard 'second' and ran with it. You'd really have to be trying in order to do better than a second-degree burn with a cigarette. Not that burning a kid at all isn't sick enough already...

According to the video, it was "six 2nd-degree burns". Copyediting for the lose.

Oh, yeah, the reason I came in...

Okay... Let's assume someone screwed up on the 6-degree burn.

This lady has problems. Someone needs to give her a once over for burn scars. If she doesn't have any, then she has deep deep deep problems.

I would venture that if she does have any, she also has deep deep deep problems.

Even if she does, she has deep problems.

I give no quarter for prior abuse when you're abusing a child, sorry.

Gyrfalcon: I give no quarter for prior abuse when you're abusing a child, sorry.

Pretty much the ONLY people who abuse children were those who were themselves abused. Sexual, physical, psychological across the board every study points to abuse as a self perpetuating cycle where the victims grow up to the be the agents.

If you don't believe in some kind of prophylactic cull of victims, then you really have to allow for some sympathy in your judgement of abusers because those same people probably got the same treatment they give. Compassion is not the same as weakness or foolishness.

No, I have as much compassion as anyone, more probably; but not for people who want to use it as an excuse for them. Sympathy is also not the same as compassion. I'm sorry if this crazy biatch was abused as a child; in fact she probably was; but I'm not about to give her one millimeter of wiggle room because of it. She's an adult, she had law-enforcement on her side, she had NO REASON not to know there were other options out there besides burning her own child. The mere fact that she trots out the "I thought they were mosquito bites" excuse tells me she is NOT ready to face her own inner demons, and she needs some jail time.

Before you go telling me I need sympathy, compassion or whatever; well, I come down like this on my own kind too. I have bipolar disorder and I've never stolen anything, whored around, robbed anyone, or blamed my excessive debts or troubles on my bipolar illness like some I can name. If you are an adult and can't face your own problems and you aren't mentally retarded or actively psychotic, then your problems are on you and you deserve whatever you get for breaking the law.

I had to look this one up, I only recall 3rd degree burns.

There is a 4th, 5th, and 6th:

Link (new window)

Fifth and Sixth Degree Burns
Fifth and sixth degree burns are most often diagnosed during an autopsy. The damage goes all the way to the bone and everything between the skin and the bone is destroyed. It is unlikely that a person would survive this type of injury but if a miracle occurred then amputation of the affected area would be necessary.

I don't think a cigarette charred him down to the bone.

No.

I just have a lot of forgiveness in my heart. If you burn a kid with cigarettes, that's forgivable. Right around the time your stop twichin' and get all stiff on the gibbet, I've forgiven ya.

I'd also like to forgive Wallstreet CEOs for ruining the economy, the insurgents who behead people, that Kony guy. I have so much forgiveness for their plights.

To play devil's advocate: she could be telling the truth about them being bite marks. I'm a bit sensitive to mosquitos (come up with a hive/welt rather than a normal bump), and I've come up with blistering burn-like bites a few times (never noticed what bit me, so there's probably some kind of midgee that I'm particularly sensitive to).

I didn't like the way the vid said the boy "eventually implicated Quartier". If you pause on the police report and guess at the blanks, it appears that they were asking the child if it was his dad (to which he said no), and then they asked if it was her and he remained silent. (This is after less-leading questions, where they just asked how he got each of the burns, but didn't get a name out of him). Not exactly a clear accusation, and it's very easy to implant false memories in kids with repetitive leading questions.

Compassion, excuse me what??
