It's so rare that it happened just three weeks (new window) ago with Powerball in WV.

The individual purposefully bought 5 tickets with 5 out of 6 correct numbers. Paid off this time, but you gotta wonder how many times the guy has plunked down $5 for nothing.

/sells tickets at work sometimes, people come thru and buy 20 of the same Daily 3 numbers at a shot...

Giltric:1 2 3 4 5 6 on 5 tickets is 5 payouts of 250k when it wins.

I am so trying those numbers! Thanks!

Hey - that's the combination to my luggage; now that's a coincidence.

Since we're talking about someone playing the lottery, I'm gonna go with "1".

It has an equal chance of being 1 2 3 4 5 6 as it does any other combination.

That doesn't seem all that unlikely to me.

Metaluna Mutant: The Lottery, with its weekly pay-out of enormous prizes, was the one public event to which the proles paid serious attention. It was probable that there were some millions of proles for whom the Lottery was the principal if not the only reason for remaining alive. It was their delight, their folly, their anodyne, their intellectual stimulant. Where the Lottery was concerned, even people who could barely read and write seemed capable of intricate calculations and staggering feats of memory. There was a whole tribe of men who made a living simply by selling systems, forecasts, and lucky amulets

And lo religion was born.

There's a couple of reasons to buy multiple plays of the same numbers.

1. If you pick 5 right but not the powerball, then you win the payoff amount for each ticket. So now this guy gets 1.25 mil instead of just 250k because he had 5 winning tickets.

2. That doesn't work if you win the powerball jackpot, you'll just split it with yourself among the tickets you bought. BUT, if you have 5 plays and someone else picks the same numbers and only buys 1 play, you split the jackpot 5 to 1 with the other winner.

I'm gonna guess he picked the same numbers 5 times but with a different mega number on each:

12345 1
12345 2
12345 3

12345 5

A damned lucky accident.

If the winning numbers were pre planned and not random, and winner had a contact inside the lottery office, yes it's suspicious. This is sounding more like they don't want to pay out to a group that got their numbers from the same source.

The time traveller has two choices.

A> Buy 5 winning tickets worth $1,250,000.
B> Buy 1 winning ticket worth $241,000,000.

The time traveller picking option A is probably a moron.

The time traveling might make the brain like swiss cheese. He might have forgotten the mega ball number, or if it was written down the paper got smudged on that number.

1.Time traveller can go back in time and re-write the paper without smudging the numbers.
2. Have a wank whilst waiting as he goes through time machine
3. Profit.

Assuming fixed payout for 5 numbers without the powerball, I'm having trouble seeing why this is a worse method than picking randomly.

If you're aiming entirely for the jackpot, it's a reasonable strategy, since the payout for a near miss is still high. But the odds of winning a non-jackpot prize are cut down quite a bit. So it's kind of an all-or nothing deal. Five sets of totally random numbers have no better odds of winning the jackpot, but they do have better odds of winning a non-jackpot prize.

People have been doing this since the creation of lotteries in the US.

The reason people do it is so they get the lion's share of the prize amount.

Sure, it makes no sense if you are the only winner.

downstairs: People have lucky numbers they play all the time. Since this is a big pot, I could see someone playing those numbers multiple times.

Exactly. Way I heard it, (didnt pull up the article) there were so many winners because the numbers fall into line with being birthdays and ages crap. so a lot of people played the same numbers because a lot of people had the system of birthdays and ages.... and whoever bought 5 of the tickets probably switched out the lucky megaball number, but kept the other numbers the same, and managed not to hit the megaball.

Unless they were all true quick picks.

(a ticket with mixed picked and quick #s will still show up as a QP)

ihatedumbpeople's point is the same as nightlyraider's, though. How many times has this person played the same numbers but just switched out the megaball.. and LOST? that's a lot of money to spend per week. Hitting that once in a lifetime of actually getting it right...... is it really worth it? they got lucky, and bully for them, but 99% of the time it's stupid unless you have a shiatload of disposable income and won't miss it each week.
