jaytkay: iron de havilland: where I'm from, racism certainly has existed, but it has never been sanctioned by the state, as segregation was in the US well into the 20th century. As I understand, the only time segregation has ever been practised in the UK is during WWII, when Patton insisted upon it for GIs stationed in the UK.

Well, I guess they skipped it in your history classes, but your eternally non-racist home had a period called the "Empire" with "colonies".

For example there is a place called "America" where the English established slave plantations.

Fascinating stuff. You really should look into it. Seriously. I am not making this up.

Don't forget the chapter on ethnic cleansing in Ireland done by Cromwell......

If you're getting your information from TV, that would explain your racism.

2. What skin color was the murderer?

No, man you're right, for about 5% of American history. For the other 95%, the opposite is true. But keep on representing, my fraternal relative.

nekom: Lumpmoose: One black blogger says the point more eloquently :

This is the very reason why I tell my son not to wear hoodies and such "indicators" because when you are dead, it's too late. My message to him has been that this is the society you live in and you have to be realistic. My own parents were as frank to me, when I was a boy; over and over, they said all the talk about equality is just talk, you have to protect your life, and to do so you have to do things white kids don't have to do.

Crucify the murderer in the court of law... then take away your kid's hoodies.

I was listening to an NPR segment the other day about this, and a black caller said pretty much the same thing, he said they were all (him, his family, every black person he knows) taught at a young age how to act. Don't run with anything in your hands, don't wear certain types of clothing, don't make any sudden moves.

It's quite sad that minorities have to go through that, but I guess like it or not it IS the reality, I guess if I were black, I'd tell my kids the same.

And think about an entire lifetime of having to deal with this bullsh*t... making sure you keep your hands out of your pockets when walking through stores in the mall... jingling your car keys in the parking lot if you're walking behind a white woman so she knows you're there... making sure you take your sunglasses off when you go into a bank or other financial institution... keeping your registration and insurance papers on the top of the pile in the glovebox of your car so that the cops don't think you're reaching for a weapon and shoot you when they pull you over...

These and a thousand other things are part of the black male existence in this country, no matter what your education level, income, or attire. For some people educated black = n****r, well-dressed black = n****r, black in a nice car = that n****r stole it, and that's the way it always will be. You have to constantly watch who you approach, what you say, where you go and what you do because you never know when some wanna be Rambo will roll up on you with a mission. I'm making sure my 17 year old nephew, who has already been taught by his father (a cop for over 22 years) how to be a black male in this country, reads this story if he hasn't already.

And people wonder why black men die at higher rates of stress-related illnesses then whites.
A lifetime of watching your back will do that.

DavidVincent: LeBron James and his Miami Heat teammates did not make a show of their support of slain teenager Trayvon Martin during the pregame warm-up portion of tonight's game against the Detroit Pistons at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

Instead of a visible demonstration, some Heat players opted for a quiet statement by writing messages on their shoes. James wrote "RIP Trayvon Martin" on his shoes, and Chris Bosh wrote "We Want Justice" on his.

Earlier, James and Heat guard Dwayne Wade posted photos on Twitter of themselves and their teammates wearing hooded sweatshirts, or hoodies, in support of Martin, who was shot and killed by a neighborhood crime-watch volunteer Feb. 26 in Sanford, Fla., while wearing a hoodie while returning to a gated community.

Serious question for the trolls: Does it disgust you that you have to dial it up this high to get attention, because the Republicans just keep getting worse? That the standard for what qualifies as shockingly obscene keeps getting harder and harder to get to as the distance between "shockingly obscene" and "everyday GOP awfulness" gets more and more narrow?

Are you dreading the day you have to smear your own feces onto your naked body and tackle pregnant women at the grocery store just to overcome the noise-level put out by the people you choose to imitate?

MagSeven: and the cops seemed not to give fark all about even pretending to do their jobs.

Why do people keep saying that? They conducted interviews at the scene and then took Zimmerman to the police station on the night of the shooting for an interview. They then continued the investigation and even issued press releases about the ongoing status of the investigation. The second press release indicated that they were close to wrapping up the investigation and would be turning over all of the evidence to the State Attorney's office. The popular claim that no investigation was taking place is untrue.

Investigators don't have a lot to go on but they are going to be able to establish a pretty solid time line based on the 911 calls and eyewitness testimony. What really helps is that the gunshot can be heard on at least one of the 911 calls so they know exactly when the shooting happened in relation to all of the other calls that were received. If Zimmerman's story isn't true, there's going to be a good chance that something in that timeline is going to trip him up.

Headso: Since this is fark, asperger central, I can only assume one that doesn't suck would be velcro sneakers, sweatpants with elastic around the ankles, and a sweatshirt with wolves on it.

Hmmmm . . . I'm partial to bright yellow or neon green crocs myself (preferably worn with rainbow or polka dot toe socks) and I HATE the sweatpants with the elastic around the ankles (also hate ones without pockets).

But I DO have a rather stylish Hoodie sweatshirt with LOTS of wolves on it. (A bunch of the wolves are hidden, so ya have to find them - like the old Highlights magazine hidden pictures page - tons of fun on pinochle night,) It's my favorite Hoodie!

Does this count?
What'd I win? :-D

Anyhow, I'm an old fark and I LOVE HOODIES!
They keep my huge round old grey head warm.

(Now the falling down, over-sized pants, with butt and boxers hanging out, do look really SILLY to me - however . . . since no one forces me to wear them - I could give a furry rat's behind.)

Recently heard wearing pajamas everywhere was starting to trend and THAT sounded REALLY comfy. The anal-retentives are already feverishly working on making it illegal though - before it even has a chance to get going. Fad killers! Those soulless suits could suck the fun outta a roller-coaster.

Never occurred to me someone might actually SHOOT me for wearing Hoodies though. . . Golly!
(Always figured it'd be the day-glow crocs and rainbow toe socks that'd push someone over the edge.)

Well, it's better than having that "final" heart attack and falling face first into the used kitty litter I suppose.

Does anyone know if they make glow-in-the-dark crocs??????
Those would sure be fun!

But I digress . . .

M's already been taken.

ChuDogg:
Very good and thorough post. I do have a couple points of disagreement.

1) The screams on the 911 call, are in fact Zimmerman.
"in fact" is "in dispute", actually, although I do agree it is likely him.

2) Zimmerman was being violently assaulted and had reason to believe he was at risk for physical injury or death
Zimmerman chased after someone who had no idea why he was being chased. Zimmerman is the aggressor, in the POV of Martin who then has right to Stand His Ground (after, appropriately, attempting to get away).

3) He was trapped below Martin, and thus could not "attempt to flee", thus, "Stand Your Ground" law is irrelevant. This is purely a self defense matter. This same situation could have happened with in any State with a "Attempt to Flee" clause".
Zimmerman may have voided security of stand your ground by taking pursuit after someone. He might still be able to claim self defense, but he escalated the situation. (Remember, Martin has no idea why he's being chased. Zimmerman was not pursuing someone in the commission of a crime)

13 year old boy is second witness to Zimmerman on the ground. Only sees a man in a Red Shirt (zimmerman) before his dog ran away link
This is the boy's and his sister calling 911 link

Martin's father reviewed the tapes and denies it is his son's voice screaming: link

his father denies having said that.

I don't think Zimmerman set out to kill a black kid that night. I do think he had a fear of the black kids entering his neighborhood (he called 911 on a 7 year old, iirc). He felt a kid moseying through the neighborhood (walking while talking, so probably not briskly walking) was up to no good and probably on drugs or something. (my paraphrase of the call).
I don't think he said "coon", fwiw, during the call. I don't think that helps the situation any that people keep screaming that it sounded like it.
I can understand that Martin was kicking his ass and he worried for his life. I get that. I think he added to the situation and was not defending anything in pursuing. Manslaughter or whatever unintended murder might be.

Wondering if Martin saw the gun when Zimmerman passed and then took action when Zimmerman turned around...

Of course not. The derp of the race card is infused in all these discussions.

This. It is the same in Omaha. Wherever two or more Blacks are gathered together for anything, there will be gunfire. And nobody ever sees a thing. Heck, the cops have put gunfire locating devices in North Omaha (really, I'm not kidding) because about the only way they are going to catch the shooter is if they are on the scene while the bullets are still flying. It is also incredible how many show up in the ER with gunshot wounds and don't say a thing to the police. So, the prevailing attitude is "who gives a fark if two n****** shoot each other. They don't care, so why should we." Now if a black person shoots a white guy, they will find some black guy to arrest. And if a white guy shoots a black guy, there will be the usual outcry about "hunting season on black boys", even when the black "child" had a farking gun pointed at the white guy when he got shot. The whole thing is disgusting - all of it. Hell, people are disgusting, no matter what race they are.

wambu: Would the dialog from all those concerned be the same if Zimmerman were white? Or Martin an Islamic student?

I think the bigger issue is that Zimmerman was a Neighborhood Watch leader, and the rules of his organization state that members should never confront people they believe to be suspicious.

There's also the fact that his father released a statement claiming "At no time did George follow or confront Mr. Martin," despite the fact that there is a recording of his call to 911 in which Zimmerman tells the dispatcher that he's following Martin.
