WanPhat: Are they sure it's not some goober playing around with explosives?

We used to do something like that by blocking the downhill side of a storm sewer with plastic sheeting and filling a few hundred feet of culvert uphill from there with acetylene from carbide, which would eventually reach the candle sitting just uphill from the carbide generator. The resultant explosion would reverberate through the storm sewer system all over town, providing a nice diffuse boom.

Me and my buddies were always too scared to try cow tipping, so we made do with BB guns doing driveby's near some of the dairy farms.

Some of the quarries and gravel pits I've gone to for work stuff have 24 hour operations, it wouldn't surprise me if fracking operations were the same.

Weren't there reports of weird noises coming out of the earth in New Madrid in 1811?

I'm not saying it's a precursor to a lengthy series of massive intra-plate earthquakes, but it could be a precursor to a lengthy series of massive intra-plate earthquakes.

I don't believe in the alien crap....BUT...

I live in S. Georgia and I was woken up more than a few times last month by these weird booms that sounded like someone was slamming a door 200yds away, or piece of wood being dropped outside.

Not quite loud enough to shake anything or really be that annoying, but loud enough to barely wake me and it would go on for about 60 seconds. But it wouldn't be like every 5 seconds or anything consistent....just a boom....then 6-7 seconds....then another...then 4 seconds...then another...etc...

I ignored it the first couple of days but after about 4 days I noticed it enough to mention it to people (and mention it now).

The explanation from WI is that it is small quakes or water running dry in the hard rocks deep in the earth makes sense. I live on the side of a small mountain and we didn't have much rain over the winter...so maybe it is the earth slightly moving.

/or fracking
//or aliens

Are there any military bases around there?

Last time (in the early 90's) So Cal had "mysterious booming noises" early in the morning it supposedly wasn't the Air Force not testing a supersecret hypersonic spy plane that didn't come in on the same flight path into Edwards AFB but left a seismic signature very different from the one the shuttle left.

So it's probably not one of those, either.

Dunno about most smart phones, but my new one came with an installed voice recorder. People need to start utilizing the technology they carry around with them all the time... I'd be recording all damn night if this was going on.

/also own a dedicated recorder
//and my Canon Eos can do video/audio...

meat0918: Are there any caves or mines in the area?

Houghton/Hancock reportedly had microquakes and loud booms from the deep shaft copper mines running through the hillside. They attributed it to massive amounts of air shifting through temperature zones (they hollowed out the hillside in some places). Since the mines have filled with water now, no more booms

Not sure about that but...
Every day at 12:20 Negaunee has a tiny earthquake and boom as they set off the explosions at Tilden.

Must be an underground skyscraper project from the Umbrella Corporation

The earthquakes are a bullshiat explanation. Even the USGS people don't think the sounds are earthquake related. An earthquake is an event with a limited duration. These booms apparently are happening all the time.

Could be, like someone else said, something in an aquifer just gave way. The seismic reading would be a reflection of that, not the cause.

Given the rush of the press to pinpoint a reason, no matter how flimsy, I'd wager that it's government-related.
