To be fair, so would I. I'd sell out so fast...that's not my issue with them. It's that they suck and think they are important. They are Kings of Leon 2.0.

I'm so sick and tired of people who rave about the Black Keys. Their songs are either; A) boring and simple or B) a rip-off of a much better song.

Black Keys fan: "Dude, have you heard the new Black Keys?"
Me: "Yeah, I heard it 10 years ago when it was performed by T-Rex."

I like the Black Keys. They aren't the best, but they write some good solid electric white boy blues.

And I don't care if bands sell their songs to be used. I would too.

Can't stand Nickelback.

I like how people get on the Black Keys for "selling out." Making money is how you get to stay being a musician you dolts. Letting people use your music in commercials doesn't have jack to do with your musical abilities.

They were a nice counterweight to the White Stripes when both were coming out as a newfangled, turn-back-the-clock rock & blues minimalist sound...thing. The Keys were a little more straight-ahead, tighter-sounding, and of course had competent percussion.

I was slowly tuning them out to being with, and now with their songs used on 1/3 of adverts I see, my "meh" is turning to annoyance.

No he won't. Electric Warrior was/is great in its own right, but it won't make someone be all "I see music in a whole new way!" If anything, he'll just understand where some of the blues style rock musicians get their influence.

Their songs are used in dozens of commercials, they're whores. It doesn't mean they don't have 'ability'.

Some bands make money by selling albums and touring, I think they call it 'being a professional musician'.

Making money off of playing music makes you a professional musician. That's kind of what it means. If letting commercials use their music brings more people to listen to them, good for them.

You do have an excellent point, but some of those bands go away as you age, and some stick with you for life. I was 17 years old, hanging out with the older "cool kids", and was also really into Sublime. I thank God that "40 Oz. to Freedom full back tattoo" never panned out.

about 4 songs in now, and without really knowing much about them (other than the US radio hit later in the album) I would say they remind me a lot of David Bowie.

Was there another band called Trex that didn't have Marc Nolan because:

a. The band has been gone since 1977 and all the members have been dead since 2003 so I doubt they did much in the last 10 years
b. Trex sounds 100% nothing like the Black Keys - glam rock vs garage rock and all that.

NutznGum: I just think they're a mediocre band

Then that's your opinion, which doesn't make you a hater. What makes you a hater is claiming they're whoring themselves out by selling their music, which is kind of the point, whether through mp3's, tickets, merchandise, etc. Unless you like your musicians poor and struggling and only producing for two years tops before reality sets in and they have to quit for daytime jobs.

haha yeah, I hear ya. I still like Sublime too though...which ain't cool on here. but I am okay with that. If I got a band tattoo when I was 17 it would have either been Led Zeppelin or Beastie Boys. I still like both, but no where near like I used to.
