That was nice of them to include absolutely no additional information about any of those vending machines. I mean, who would want to know the story behind them, where they're located, or any other information about them. Much better to just have a few photos.

Exactly. Also, do the infamous Japanese panty vending machines not really exist? 'Cause if they do, it seems like they should be #1 on any "strange vending machine" list.

List fails without life bait, and beer vending machines.

I could have sworn that I read somewhere that those are outlawed now. Or maybe it's the used panty vending machines.

I'm at work , so I'm not about to unleash my Google-fu for "used panty vending" to find out for sure.

Wow, the Pringles machine was absolute fail. Are those on the bottom all ones that got stuck and someone lost their money, or a decoration?

Is that a skull on the bottom?

The bike one's not so weird. Well.. maybe that specific one.

Montreal has this system where you can stick a credit card into a vending machine and receive a bicycle. Return it to any other rack in the city and you get charged based on the time you had it out (which scales up depending on how long you've removed it from the system - like free for the first 30 minutes, $1.50 for up to 60 minutes, $4.50 total for up to an hour and a half, etc.).

I thought it was actually pretty awesome.

/chose to walk because it was a nice day but I might take them up on it next time I go

#4 isn't even a vending machine - that's a crane game.

Besides, who wants a vending machine that dispenses a snack food?

Totally bizarre!!!

/Hilton in Las Vegas had an iPod vending machine near the Star Trek Experience

I saw the banana one in a tokyo subway station last year. forgot to take a picture.

Ah, I was a little off.

It's actually a $5 flat fee + time you have the bike out, but I remembered the fee schedule correctly (freaky.)

More info here (new window)

We can agree to disagree but I still think that's completely reasonable. Realistically you're not going to have the bike out for much more than 30 minutes if you're just looking to get from point A to point B quickly. And you don't need to return it to the same machine you got it from. So in theory you can use them on demand for a day and not pay more than $5. It's cheaper than a taxi.

Or you can walk if you're feeling cheap; it's a beautiful city.

Looking at the link, yes the prices do seem reasonable. It was the 4.50 for an 1.5 hours that I thought was unreasonable. And the yearly subscription for only $78 is very reasonable, I could easily spend more than that per year buying a bike myself.

I want a vending machine that vends vending machines

This one time, when I was in Rome, I went to a cigarette vending machine in a parking lot. after inserting the correct coinage, i selected a pack of cigarettes.

the machine gave me banana flavored condoms.

i loled. so did my friends. we were very drunk and this was breaking down our tenuous grasp on reality.

i did it a second time to see if I'd get more banana flavored condoms... basically testing the law of universal introduction... or contemplated the possibility of banana flavored condom and cigarette tautologies.

I selected the same pack of cigarettes. and I got the cigarettes.

someone stocking the machine put condoms in there. and they were banana flavored. we loled about that for a while, then got drunker, then I fell off a wall and hit me head after taking a chicken wing from a nearby market. oh rome. i will never really remember you.

Hmmmm... don't remember that in 2006 when I was there. Would have come in handy. Though their transit system is pretty awesome when someone isn't killing themselves on it.

(Had two suicides stall the trains on us, and saw another crazy dude trying to jump off a bridge.)

I saw one (on video that is) that was not cool, but horrible. In Japan. It sold little containers with live crabs in them. So they fold crabs up into these tiny containers, and they sit there until somebody buys it, opens the container, rips the crab apart and eats it.

Way to go, humanity.

Meh. I did too- as a teenager. I didn't enjoy it. I was from Chicago, and the city is just like Chicago with less good food and culture. Maybe as an adult I'd be able to find more stuff to my liking.

Ore-Ida Foods used to make a french fry vending machine. I tried it out when I was visiting their corporate headquarters once.

It made good fries

This reminded me of a machine that sat outside of a drive thru beer/wine place in Ohio back in the late '80's. It was an old coke machine that sold a variety of live bait, and the last slot had Busch beer in it.

That's a great idea! I'm going to start hanging out at high schools soliciting teen girls underwear, then sell "Used Schoolgirl Underwear" at a profit through low-overhead vending machines. Who will complain?

I frequently have that classic dream of being nakkid in public. Maybe now I can dream of being saved by the jeans and necktie dispensers.

And the panties. Which is strictly a comfort thing.
