Scum of the earth.

Ok, where are these Tweets where he's making fun of that gay kid? The only one I've seen in any news article is the one in TFA: "I saw him making out with a dude. Yay." That seems kinda iffy to me.

The only thing I've seen that was particularly off the wall was that he was essentially running a peep show via streaming video. I don't get that. Maybe that was the harassment. I don't know. It was wildly inappropriate, that's for sure.

So instead of being a raging homophobe, you admit to completely lacking empathy and being unable to predict how your negative actions will impact others? Much better. And by better, I mean you are unsuitable to continue to participate in a civilized society. Please serve your sentence and then depart.

I came up against the "intention" defense last night, so I'd just like to say this again:

It doesn't matter if he didn't intend to drive Clementi to suicide, if his actions had that effect. He's still guilty of the crimes he was charged with.

So anyone will get the same punishment if they did the same thing with a heterosexual roommate right?

So if my unemployed neighbor is driven to suicide because seeing me leave for work each days pushes him over the edge I should be charged?

I view getting stuck with a gay roomate in college in the same vein as a smoking roomate. You should get to move or switch immediately without penalty.

What if I know a guy who is getting gray hair and I tell everyone and he is then driven to suicide?

What about if my coworker who's trying to diet and get healthy kills himself. Can they charge me for the crime because I have pizza and burritos for lunch in my cube (which is visable to him)

they need to charge you because you insist on singing "Heigh-Ho" until you are three blocks away.

He should not be sorry. Sticks and stones will break my bones and all. I like how offending someone is now a crime. Christ.

Just shows how unequal people want the world to be. So the dude was a pole goblin, so what? We supposed to feel sorry for him for being an idiot and killing himself? You know what drove the kid to suicide? Being a pussy. This whole anti-bullying movement is beyond retarded.

Isn't that the purpose of punishment?

But for nothing: I had a gay roommate in college. Of course, this was back in the internet stone ages in 1997-8. I would have had to VHS his encounters and distribute copies by hand.

2012-03-22 02:37:59 PM
The guy is unquestionably a douchebag, but spending years in prison for picking on somebody on the internet seems a tad harsh. The outcome was tragic, but the punishment seems disproportionate to what the guy actually did. He didn't kill the kid.

Kicked out of school? Yes. Sued for every penny he owns? Absolutely. But prison....

Pretty much this.

He should be charged for invasion of privacy, but the intimidation charge is stupid.

Well:

Ravi, 20, was convicted last week on charges including invasion of privacy and anti-gay intimidation.

Both of those require intent, and the second one requires intent related to his sexual orientation. You can't get charged with invasion of privacy for accidentally walking in on something, so far as I know.

I disagree with this completely. He only got punished because the kid was gay. If he had posted video of the kid jerking off to the golden girls or something, and then the kid killed himself, he would not have been charged. This was all media driven, and the kid got railroaded.

Not to see he's not a dick, but we all were at that age. The punishment most certainly doesn't fit the crime.

Doesn't this mean that killing yourself is the ultimate way to get back at someone who was a dick to you?

If you tried to sue him or get him kicked out of school, you're just being a whiny little biatch. But kill yourself and suddenly you're a martyr and the guy's going to hell, or jail, or whatever.

Where homosexuality is discouraged, the occasional deviant still manages to conform to the conventions of that society. The gay stereotype becomes true when no constraint is placed upon aberrant behaviour, and this causes conflicts with the standards of the community.

In short, a complete intolerance of homosexuality provides the safest environment for youngsters to correct such behaviour.

Not quite the same. You are doing nothing malicious to your neighbour.

If I drink and drive but don't intend to kill someone, I am still involved in an action that is known to cause harm. Taping someone having sex and distributing it with desparaging remarks is knowingly inflicting harm.

Driving to work is very similar to invading someone's privacy and broadcasting their intimate life to the world.

He didn't know that posting a video of his roommate doing it on the internet for everyone to see was wrong. And more than that if he was doing a girl "that weird" his actions would have been the same. We call that a sociopath.

He didn't murder the kid. He didn't assault him in any way. He picked on him and violated his privacy, but the violence itself was self-inflicted. Now, everyone is trying to hold him accountable for the violence and letting their anger blind them to what the guy actually did.

He said mean stuff on the internet. If they're going to start locking people up for that, we're going to need to build a lot more prisons.

Anti gay intimidation charges for a hetero? Of course not.

Probably depends on the state, but if you violate someone's privacy by video recording them, disseminating it, , harass them, and drive them to suicide for being caught having realtions with your fat Mom, yes you would likely be looking at some degree of punishment.

Jim_Callahan: You can't get charged with invasion of privacy for accidentally walking in on something, so far as I know.

Maybe our thought processes differ, but to me, there's a big difference between accidentally walking in on a roommate getting down and actively setting up your computer to accept connections from anyone to broadcast activity from what was believed to be a private space. It's like the difference between walking in and surreptitiously setting up a peephole, telling people to take a look.

Agreed--you cannot tell me that if he had done this to a woman, and she killed herself due to the shame we'd be viewing this through the same lens, or saying we don't care.

You don't invade someone's privacy, especially to this extent. It's mean. It's malicious. This kid wasn't ready to come out. He may not have ever felt comfortable, and it is no one's farking job, as a joke or not, to bring that out against his will.

I can agree that his roomate may not have been aware of this when he did it. That's possible. But if indirectly or directly my actions resulted in someone's suicide I'd not be pleased with myself.

2012-03-22 02:51:28 PM
Should not be a criminal offense. The family of the dead fudge packer should have sued dude for infliction of emotional distress and maybe even wrongful death. But the video taper guy shouldnt be a criminal.

This country needs to stop trying to make being a dick a criminal offense.
