Yeah, the last iPhone was supposed to have a bigger screen, too. It also was supposed to have/not have LTE, have/not have NFC, and have 1G RAM. The last time we got accurate pre-launch news about an iPhone was WSJ telling us about the Verizon iPhone 4.

2012-03-22 12:33:20 PM
And I'll just have my company buy me one of those, so there.

Meh. When your friends and coworkers tease you about having an old cell phone (Motorola KRZR), it's time to switch.....so I bought the 4S last month.

It doesn't matter when you buy your iCrap. There's always a newer one around the corner. That's not going to change.

oh look, it's the "they're going to make the screen bigger" article that gets posted every year. Kind of an early start this time though.

On the plus side, a bigger phone will mean a bigger Apple logo. So people twice as far away will be able to see you have the latest iPhone!

Well if by around the corner you mean months away, then yes. I've had my crappy LG for
long enough that Verizon keeps bugging me to upgrade. I will when/if the iPhone 5 shows up.

If they don't make the next one much better then someone else will. It's kinda how technology works.

I suppose I do mean "months away". I guess because I'm not a "power user" of these things and because I have the sneaking suspicion that they have Star Trek level technology just sitting around that they're dolling out little by little to rubes who have to buy the latest thing (it's not like there isn't a long precedent for this and not just with Apple or "smart products").

You are aware that cars, TVs and other consumer products have new models every few months, right? Hence someone referring to, say, the 2013 Ford Mustang. You are aware that Mustang owners and owners of all these other consumer devices don't always opt to purchase every single iteration of their favorite product, right? Just the same as someone with a phone on a 2 year contract will probably wait 2 years until thinking about another phone. Right?

Okay, first of all, please stop saying "right". Second, most Apple people I know get at least every other iteration of their iGadget. Which is fine, I'm not judging. I just never saw a line going around the block in the middle of the night since the last Harry Potter or Star Wars movie.

So everyone chill, I'm not ripping on Apple fanboys. I use Apple products in one of my careers. In fact, it'd be nice if they paid as much attention to updating their FinalCutPro and ProTools software as they are breaking out the new iTricorder, now with a new hat. But they know which ones make more money. So it's brushing up on my Avid for me. But I digress.

Except for the people who buy every version of the ipod, iphone, and ipad. Seriously, I know people with an ipad and ipad2 who bought an ipad3 as soon as it was available for preorder. And they did not sell their other ipads.

4.6 inches is unlikely. If are going to keep the same resolution of 960 x 480 and want to keep a 300+ ppi screen they can't increase the size by much. If Retina is redefined as the new ipad ppi of 264 they can go to a 4.0 inch screen. If it is a 4.6 inch screen then the dpi is 230, basically the same as 2nd rate Android devices, so no chance of that happening.

I honestly don't know anyone who rushes out to buy the latest and greatest cell phone, most have them on 18 - 24 month contracts and really don't see the point until that contract is up. I'd guess a similar situation with some of the slates and their 3G data plans. I know plenty that WANT the new shiny as and when it's released but that's a different kettle of fish.

I'm sure such people exist but I've never actually met one in the flesh.

Newer.. yes, better, doubt it. It's still an 'slave to the system fanboy' Apple product, it will have a crappy camera, average battery life at best, still a locked phone, a million fart apps in your sacred iTunes app store that Apple chooses what you can use/program/buy platform.

Ok Siri is nice to a point but really all these people jizz'ing over an poor quality phone just because Apple says it's good and the population of sheep buy into it.

I just love laughing at the stupid people camping out for the new iPhone. Their the mindless weak ones that will be in their mothers basements at 40 wondering what happened, because Siri and Apple didn't tell them what to do or what to like.

The iPhone's small screen is one of several things that keeps me from even considering one. I've been using a 4" screen for almost a year now and I don't think I could handle a downgrade in size.

I use my phone to make phone calls and read my email, so screen size means nothing to me - I'm never, ever going to watch video on it, but I do need internet access. Yes, I'm kinda old.

That being said, is this the wrong place to ask about droid vs iPhone? I'm due to upgrade from my 1st-gen small screen Droid, and I'm looking for input. The 4s seems the right size for me, and all the new Droids are big. Other than that, is there a reason to buy one over the other?

Discuss.

Some android phones are still 4", however, they are generally the lower end ones. Take a look around at Target or Best Buy to get an idea of what you like the most.

The ones bigger than that don't add much wait. A friend of mine has a Droid Razr, which is the same screen size as my Evo 3D, and it feels lighter than both my phone and my gfs iphone 4 s.

I've had my 4" android phone for 18 months now. It's a samsung galaxy so the screen is great, the gps barely works the OS (2.3) is old and the customer support sucks. In all this time I haven't found a single "killer app" that makes me want to stay with android for the long term. I see no signs that the android market will ever be anything but a million free games with annoying ads and a few apps that are ok but nothing special, so I'll give the iphone 5 a serious look.

SWMBO and I bought Droid X2s last year because they had the largest screen size at the time, and since we both have close-vision problems it made a difference. We started out liking them, but after about 8 months, we have nothing but problems with them. Mine stopped accepting the firmware upgrade, but it insists on reminding me every day that I have one. (and, no, its not rooted). Verizon tech support said, basically, since its past 90 days, buy another one. I'm about to resort to rooting it and flashing the memory with a new image.

My wife's phone's ear speaker just last night stopped working. It works on speakerphone, and with a headset plugged in, but you cant use it like you would a regular phone. Rebooting, yanking the battery, factory reset, nothing has worked to fix it.

iPhones for us next time. Unfortunately, that's a year away.

YMMV

I did a lot of research and went with an iPhone and an Android tablet. I actually got the tablet for free, but once I got rid of shiatass Honeycomb I decided I really like it... just not enough to have an Android phone.

I have an HTC EVO. Beautiful device with a big screen. Having it for months, I decided to play with an iPhone the other day. Thing feels like a small toy in comparison! IPhone definitely needs to go with a much bigger screen size.
