Screw kites, I want a pair of those wings.

I, for one, welcome our new man-bird flying overlords.

No, subby, I won't. It's bollocks.

Not even close to possible. The wings would have to be enormous and thus would be impossible to "flap", let alone fast enough to create enough lift.

Exactly that! Find any reasonably appropriate bird, typical seagull for example. Weigh the damned thing, then measure the wingspan. Figure out weight to span ratio, then convert the wing length to your body weight. Have fun with that!

/Physics, how does it works?

No, it's totally possible. He's supposedly being aided by some lithium batteries and some tiny propellers. He would have better luck with a standard propeller, fixed wings and a bicycle setup, tho.

This is most likely faked, but it is possible with modern materials and a very strong and light pilot...

Exactly! Take a look at the soil around any large US city with a big underground homosexual population, Des Moines, Iowa, perfect example...

Still, one of the best hoaxes I've seen on the internet. There is no obvious mistake to be found, and all background looks entirely believable.

Sure the physics don't work out, but if that's the only thing, I'd say they did a really good job. Hell even CG "experts" break a sweat trying to find mistakes in the fake video.

The thing that did it for me is the CAD prototype of the engine that they show. which seems to be just random and magically moving parts. And of course that prototype was shown in Maya instead of an actual CAD/CAE program.

I'm sure someone will make something one day. Planes are based off how birds work anyhow. Are there no man-made materials that can achieve this?

Your arguments would have been better if you'd actually WTFV. He doesn't "flap"; it's motorized.

Well, for starters, it doesn't work by guessing. Jaime of Mythbusters used these fancy things called "numbers", and decided the wing size was plausible.

Still fake, but so are your arguments. Lesson: it's possible for both sides to be wrong!

I'm sad that it's fake, but man, I still hope we find a way to make something like this work before I die. No CGI, attached jets or propellers. Pure human power, and the ability to actually lift off, not just glide.

staypuft242: I'm sure someone will make something one day. Planes are based off how birds work anyhow. Are there no man-made materials that can achieve this?

Birds and planes have a lot of extra weight gone by evolution/design. Hollow bones in birds is probably the biggest thing. I don't think the materials are the issue, I think it's what would be needed to lift an average person of the ground probably couldn't be powered by the average person's arms.

And bees! They can't fly, either! Their wings are too little for their fat bodies, everyone knows that. They fly through the power of LucasArts.

Broom: Fake.

This article actually shows that it is not fake. From what I've read it is actually real. The guy isn't flapping the wings completely with his own power, but that is pretty obvious by the way it moves. The data on this is pretty extensive. Unless someone can link something that shows this entire project is faked then I will believe that it is real.

Really? Because this was the first time I saw it, and what immediately jumped out to me was how they obscure the moments of take-off and landing - presumably where you'd transition from live to CGI. The moment he leaves the ground is obscured by the camera suddenly going out of focus, and when he lands, his buddy just happens to wander in front of the camera juuuuust long enough so we don't see it.

I don't-- I don't know. I don't think so.
