netweavr: So the person who reported the bounty-system was Jeremy Shockey.

On December 16, 2007, in week 15 of the season, while playing the Washington Redskins, Shockey broke his left fibula and suffered damage to his ankle. He underwent surgery, and missed the rest of the 2007 season. Kevin Boss then took over Shockey's spot as the starting tight end.

In 2007 the DC for the Washington Redskins was.... Gregg Williams.

Holy farking wow.

robsul82: redmid17: Well no. Teams in the past who've violated the salary cap (eg Broncos) have been punished. Bounties are explicitly illegal as is salary cap circumvention. If Payton and Loomis had stopped the program instead of giving a big middle finger to the league office, these punishments would be solely on Williams and the players.

Yes, it's illegal, but it doesn't rise to the level of cheating. You know, Tracy Porter got bonuses for picking off Favre and Peyton, is that cheating? While it violates the salary cap, no, obviously not.

cheat - verb (used without object - ie The Saints cheated)

4. to practice fraud or deceit: - Check

Jets-Broncos agreed to Tim Tebow trade before Denver asked NY to pay back portion of bonuses and salary already paid to Tebow. No deal yet.

Hahaha, seriously? "Uh, by the way, could you guys pay back a portion of the salary and bonuses we've already paid to Tebow, that cool?" after the deal is made? Even if that's a regular happening, that's amusing to picture.

I suppose not, I'm just trying to figure out a reason why he'd snitch. I guess the injury against the Redskins is as good as any, I'm just wondering how long it took him to figure out that Williams was the DC of the 'Skins at the time.

The guy on TV said that it's money that Tebow would have to repay were he to retire early. So, I guess it's cause if he were to retire, he'd pay that money back to NY now instead of Denver?

You have to remember that last time Denver traded away a goofy quarterback it was to Chicago. That stuff would have flown last time around.

Browns sign Usama, expected to help them bring down Jets in New York (new window)

Can't argue that the language is similar. but, at least the headline matches the story in this case. Usama Young had nothing to do with the Jets, or New York. He left New Orleans, who only played the Jets once while he was there (2009, he recorded 0 tackles, btw) to play for Cleveland, who...didn't play the Jets last year either.

Nah, just comfortable pointing out that under the dictionary definition, every single instance of breaking a rule constitutes cheating, so every time you see a yellow flag on the field, that player cheated. Oh, and that most people who played the game agree with me, that's pretty good too.

They'll be penalized too. That's why refs have those yellow flags as well as the ability to toss players from games. Thumbing your nose multiple times at the league office when they essentially saved your ass from going to jail is one of *the* stupidest things they could have done.

Well, from the sounds of it, the language was in the contract. So it's more that the Jets didn't bother to do due diligence....

And because today in the NFL couldn't get any more bizarre, the Tebow/Jets trade may now have fallen apart. Apprently someone forgot to read his contract with Denver and the Jets might have to pay back $5 million in salary to make the deal.

Tim Tebow has $5 million worth of recapture language, meaning Jets would have to pay back money to Denver. Jets might be unwilling. Complex.

The people playing or who have played the game aren't ones enforcing the rules. The NFLPA has only backed the NFL on this, and they're opening an investigation into it as well.

Link (new window)
In a statement released Wednesday, the union vowed to "vigorously protect the rights of all players."

"If the facts prove that players voluntarily and willingly participated in conduct that jeopardized health and safety, we will work with them and the league to put in place additional safeguards to prevent this in the future," the statement said. "Dangerous play and acts on the field by players intended to injure have no place in football. We must do better to ensure that this activity is not a part of our game."
"Noting those comments, the NFLPA said Wednesday that it "negotiated vigorously to protect our players from coercive actions that compromise health and safety. The current CBA contains detailed rules on what clubs and coaches can and cannot do in terms of practice schedules and places limitations on the amount of contact. These rules include how clubs and coaches can be punished for violations of those safeguards."
