Isn't this the same cat that got in trouble at some Harry Potter convention for pulling the ol' "do you know who I am?!" card?

"You were pictured on a number of occasions with a bottle full of petrol with a rag as a wick. I accept entirely the jury's verdict that you did not throw or have any intention of throwing it but merely being in possession of it would have been terrifying to anyone who saw you."

Ummmmm what did they think he intended to do with it, drink it?

He looks crabby in that picture.

What was he rioting about, getting kicked out of the buffet?

At least BBC is smart enough to not label him as a "Harry Potter star", as rags like the Daily Fail are doing. He was barely in the later movies, hardly a "star" of the series.

The Onion is prophetic: At least BBC is smart enough to not label him as a "Harry Potter star", as rags like the Daily Fail are doing.

This is totally something that would happen in 30 Rock. "The bad news is you are going to be arrested for rioting. The good news is the newspapers called you a star."

This is the kid that got arrested for weed and lost his roles in the films as a result, no?

Two years for a swig of stolen booze (which he didn't steal) and holding a petrol bomb (made and handed to him by someone else) for a short while which he did not use, threaten to use or have any intention of using.

The sentences handed down to young people for these riots are shocking. He was a bit of a dick but he in no way deserves to have his life destroyed like this. It's the state lashing out with disproportionate violence against anyone who is perceived to threaten property, money and the interests of the privileged. Marx was right. Meanwhile, psychopathic bankers who have caused unimaginable hardship, unemployment and destruction of (other people's) wealth are not only unpunished but hugely rewarded. Fark this country.

A "typical Slytherin" would have been on the side of the police in this instance. Not that the totality of the rioters were going about things in a proper manner, but the crux of the rioting was anti-authoritarian and Slytherin house is all about an authoritarian rule and keeping a boot on the neck of the proletariat.

I half agree with you.

Banks should have been punished more fully, although the government must bear a lot of responsibility for failure in regulation and monitoring.

I think that there have been some excessive sentences re: the rioting, but I'm not sure this is one of those examples. He has a past conviction, a police reprimand and two warnings between 2001 and 2005, left his home in Hampstead to seek out rioting/looting and was walking around carrying a petrol bomb.

He has a track record of re-offending after a community sentence, so a custodial sentence seems inevitable. He pleaded innocent so no discount for pleading guilty but he gets out after a year.

On top of all that, I do think that there needs to be a message sent out that taking part in a riot (even if it's only being chummy and accepting a drink from someone who has just stolen it from a shop) will be met with strict punishment. We need something to discourage people from going along and joining in on the periphery. If they think they're only going to get a slapped wrist then why wouldn't they take a chance?

The images showed him accepting a bottle of Champagne from a rioter who had just looted a Sainsbury's supermarket and glugging down the expensive contents.

Expensive champagne from Sainsbury's? Fleet Street isn't what it was.

Chinchillazilla: They wouldn't be on the side of the police. The police are Muggles.

To be fair, the prime minister is apparently the liaison between the clueless magical folk and the mundane world, and assumably this means the real-world government helps maintain the veil. So the wizard government would be on their side, largely.

I think he deserves a bit of punishment. But really? You believe his actions warrant two years in prison?

I know this story didn't take place in the United States, but we have a serious problem with what I call "prison inflation". Sentences are getting longer and longer because that's the only direction they can go. Longer sentences = tough on crime. No one will ever reduce overly harsh sentences for fear of appearing soft on crime. But at some point you reach a point of diminishing returns.

Now we have ridiculously overcrowded prisons and a sizable portion of the population that has served hard prison time. Probably longer than was necessary.

Did they replace him with black guy in that last movie? I haven't seen it, but looking there I would've thought the black character would be the one from the train in the 6th book. Can't remember the name, but he's the only black Slytherin I know of.

Damn dude, should have moved to Hollywood when you had the chance....there you can get away with anything and get probation, and if you screw up on probation, they just extend your probation or put you on house arrest in your lavish home.

Not that the totality of the rioters were going about things in a proper manner, but the crux of the rioting was anti-authoritarian and Slytherin house is all about an authoritarian rule and keeping a boot on the neck of the proletariat.

A true Slytherin would have Confunded some rioters, then persuaded them to break into something really high-end (a jeweler's or bank, say) and turn the booty over to him. If they proved resistant to persuasion, a well-placed Imperius would do the trick. Then obliviate the rioters and leave them waiting in the ruins for the Muggle police.

The black actor, Louis Cordice, plays Blaise Zabini, who is a very minor character in the books. Zabini was brought in to take Crabbe's place after Jamie Waylett was arrested for growing pot in his mum's back yard garden.

And that's how I know I'm waaaayyyy too involved with the Harry Potter books and films.

Not that I'm too familiar with British stores but I like how they don't identify what kind of champagne it is. Dunno about the 'real' stuff but here in the states the knockoff can be bought for like $5 a bottle... I say knockoff because I'm aware that the French think it's only real if it's from the region *rolls eyes*

the charge for cannibis is to me,kinda stupid. as far as im concerned,no one should ever be charged for that,it should be legal every where on the earth. but the problem i do have with this guy is that he is a priveleged lot,and really didnt have any reason to be part of the protest in the first place. for that, yes,he does deserve the sentence for simply being a lout who took advantage of a situation to just have some unruly fun. maybe the sentence will help him right himself and realize how good he actually has it.
