Illinois Nazis For Santorum!
(He's an emission from God)

2012-03-20 04:44:59 PM
A "the dead vote in Illinois" joke. Oh wow, I mean "zing!". Fresh.

Romney wins this one by less than 15 percentage points, Newt and Santorum remain totally unfazed by their utter inability to win this thing. Wash, rinse. Repeat.

Ron Paul remains crazy, unelectable.

2012-03-20 04:45:58 PM
I bet if RON PAUL comes in 10th in a 3 man race that only means he is super awesome!

Liberderpians, ho!

2012-03-20 04:48:47 PM
Frothy should take a cue from old Honest Abe and have bogus tickets printed for the convention and distributed to his supporters. Otherwise Seward would have got it and he was unelectable. Frothy is unelectable too but funnier. Alaska.

2012-03-20 04:49:38 PM
Most of the dead voters tend to be concentrated in the Chicago area and surrounding counties, which is expected to go heavily for Romney.

That's Wrigley Field!

meat0918: This primary isn't just damaging the Republican Party anymore, it's damaging the country.

How so? Its entertaining to me. Its just a primary, it only really "means" something to Republicans.

2012-03-20 05:01:28 PM

dletter: I mean, all the minor parties basically pick by getting together in a room and deciding who they are putting up, I'm not aware of any state by state "Libertarian Party" primary system

Exactly. I believe the Libertarians just have a convention in a hotel and pick their nominee there by vote of the top dogs of the party.

There are individual state Libertarian parties, though. Maybe they get a vote.

Way back when I was a foolish college kid, I was a member of the Libertarian party. I never recall any way to vote in any primary.

SphericalTime: I think that the dead will vote for Romney in solidarity. Granted, he is a bit of a flip flopper even for a dead guy.

So I got a text message last night at midnight from some GOP Website telling me that "ROMNEY = GAY AGENDA" followed by links to sites that I had no interest in clicking.

My stepmother also told me she received a robocall from a "happy couple" telling her that if you believe marriage should be between a man and a woman, then you shouldn't vote for Romney.

Now I wonder whose campaign would be responsible for those calls/texts? Its not like we have any rabid anti-gay republicans running for...... oh wait

That doesn't narrow it down very much.

The rumor about a gay sex tape that's out there with Romney and an obviously underage boy is patently false.

I just wanted every one to know it's a lie.

40% of the voters today make more than 100k. Romney wins in a landslide

meat0918: I never thought I'd say this but.

Please pull out a win Romney. Please.

How so? Seriously.

The most effective Republican is currently President. Romney says anything but admits nothing. Why would a person who supports the Republican agenda vote against Obama?

2012-03-20 06:44:13 PM

RminusQ: Please note the following about Illinois's primary tonight: the vote does. not. matter.

I mean that 100%. Even more so than the caucus states, where there's no direct relationship between how many votes were cast at the Iowa caucuses for a candidate and how many delegates from the state he will wind up with. Tonight in Illinois, the primary vote is officially meaningless, referred to as a beauty contest.
The only results that matter tonight are subsidiary voting within each congressional district. Each DISTRICT will elect between 2 and 4 national delegates, who will be listed according to who they support. For instance, in CD 1, these twelve people are on the Republican ballot for delegate:

ARSENEAU, JEFF (ROMNEY)
MURPHY, SHAUN (ROMNEY)
REA, PATRICK E. (ROMNEY)
KOHN, JEROME (PAUL)
STETCH, GREG (PAUL)
MURPHY, MATTHEW (PAUL)
BEAUMONT, LARRY (GINGRICH)
AUGUSTYNIAK, CHUCK (GINGRICH)
NAUGHTON, MICHAEL R. (GINGRICH)
WALLACE, ERIC M. (SANTORUM)
WALLACE, JENNIFER L. (SANTORUM)
DANAHER, GINA M. (SANTORUM)

Each voter can vote for three delegates, and the three with the most votes become national delegates. This is how it worked in the US Virgin Islands with the addition of a meaningless "top-line" vote for president itself.

A voter who cast a single ballot for "Romney" today was no help to that candidate. A voter who did not vote for "Romney" but did vote for "Arseneau", "Murphy", and "Rea" did help his chosen candidate.

Also, Illinois does not post live results on their website tonight, so you are unlikely to get any useful information on how many delegates each candidate receives. Instead, drink and watch New Girl. That's what I'll be doing.

Do you have a link for more details on this?

I thought about voting for Santorum's delegates for the lulz. Then I had a moment of horror as I formed the phrase "President Santorum" in my head.

Why? Because the right wing noise machine told them too.

It feels like election cycle is going to be one of the nastiest in many decades.

Obama would have made an excellent Republican in the 70's and 80's, but let's just admit the Republicans have been tacking hard to the right since the late 80's and ceded their position as sane conservatives to the Democrats some time in the mid '00s.

They've got nothing except regressive reactionary policies that don't work and have failed every time they've been attempted.

That's what the Republican ballot looked like. There was a section where you marked the candidate, but there were two other sections listing delegates explicitly, one for primary and one for alternates. Can't chime in on the weighting, but I marked the delegates matching the candidate just to be sure. Sample:

Well, I just voted. It was almost completely meaningless to vote on the Democratic ticket in my area. There were no actual races and only one pretty meaningless referendum. But it still felt good voting for Obama again.

Isn't it more likely that the (candidate preference) suffix would be applicable if the Republicans ended up with a brokered convention, rather than saying that the vote for the candidate themselves is meaningless?

Santorum is beating Romney in the exit polls among rural voters...

...by 5 points.

That's far smaller than the usual rural/suburban spread, and far, FAR smaller than Santorum would need to pull some sort of upset win out tonight. This will get called for Mitt Romney very early, to the extent that it matters.

namatad: so even if santorum wins the popular vote in every district, he loses the delegate race because he doesnt have delegates on a bunch of ballots in some districts? this is the retarded electoral process all over again.

thank you both parties for not letting our votes count. again.

sigh

If you really cared, you would have gotten out there and helped. Winning is tougher than whining.

Since there is no Democratic primary for President this year, they will be voting for state and local Democrats... at least in Cook County. Downstaters can still engage in their usual "Fark you, Chicago!" voting patterns, secure in the knowledge that Cook County will, as usual, ignore them.

Refering to the "living-challenged" voters in Cook County, of course.

I voted today too and hardly anyone was there. The poor kid that they had as the Republican judge could barely read, if how long it took for him to find my name in the book, even with help, was any indication. The other judges weren't much better, however, it was fun to navigate the gauntlet of campaign minions with fliers on my way to the el train.

There wasn't much in the way of raced in my neighborhood either, except for a pretty hilarious race for Ward committeeman that I've been following that pitted an old machine guy, the 'hipster alderman', and a neighborhood activist/crank who strikes me as slightly unhinged against each other.

Will be interesting to see if a big Illinois win shrinks Santorum's big lead in the polls in Wisconsin.... if Romney wins Wisconsin, it is case closed (if it isn't really after tonight). Santorum will need to bounce back in Louisiana and Wisconsin (with Romney winning Maryland/DC).

I'd correct that: the Democrats started cherrypicking the Republicans' agenda when Clinton was elected. They were just too blind with hatred to see that he was taking their cake and eating it while they were trying to impeach him. And when Obama bought Clinton into his camp, he continued that trend. The Republicans, flush with their hubris, didn't see as the Democrats just took the ball and ran with it. The Democrats have set themselves up very nicely for the next few decades. Where the Republicans have nothing left but to cater to an increasingly desperate and dispirited base, the Democrats have taken all the rational points and done some good with it. When the Republicans fall, the Democrats will be the only game in town, but they have nowhere the cohesive obsessiveness that is sinking the Republicans.

The Republicans are not conservatives, they're crazies. They're authoritarian bigots blind to reality. And thanks to their short-sighted corporate model of running everything, they're falling apart just as scheduled. It's just amazing that the Democrats have taken their lunch and are leaving them with the scraps.

Romney is kicking the shiat out of Santorum at the moment, 54-28 (Paul with 10, and Gingrich in last with 7). However, everything in so far is from Chicago and Cook County. Nothing from the rural areas yet. Chicago already has 27% reporting. Overall, 4%.

2012-03-20 08:45:20 PM
It's time to put this to bed.
Santorum has been too ridiculous in the last 7 days to let him maintain any sense that this is a race.

R-Money should sew it up tonight and we can watch as he gets Obamanated come November.

From the top rope, electoral elbow.
Boom!!!
Oh Yeah!!!!

Mitt Romney is the kind of professional sobriety America needs at the moment. Out with the clowns!
