I feel sorry for all the people who are being made to suffer due to Oprah's
egomania.

It must be hard making a go of it on her shoestring budget.

I supposed they're better off than the attendees of her rape schools, though...

Oprah kinda sucks at business.

Oprah, just because my mother will watch you every day at four doesn't mean that she's going to watch your crappy network.

Is OWN on basic cable or do you have to pay extra for it, like Starz?

First This,

Also, I think it was two or three years ago, that Oprah took 50 million from Sirius XM to start a channel and do a show, where she's only one once a month for 30 minutes. Yeah SXM is stupid for allowing that, but since she obviously didn't need that money, why not pay that out to the 30 her ego network had to let go of?

Just a thought.

Now everyone look under your monitors, BECAUSE YOU'RE ALL GETTING FREE CARLOS SANTANA HANDBAGS!

I have an idea! Amidst rapidly declining cable subscriptions, I'm going to cancel my incredibly popular broadcast talk show and instead move it over to a niche cable channel!

I mean, seriously... Oprah may be hella rich, and I'm sure she got that way by being a savvy businessman, but this was one stupid decision. What on Glob's green Earth made you think that, in an era of people demanding the decoupling of cable content from cable stations, you could successfully take your show and couple it to a non-basic cable station?

Ego. Sometimes people get in their minds because they are great in one thing (as she undoubtedly was) they'll be good in everything...

Look at michael Jordan's career as a GM.

Heh. You know, I had an additional paragraph in there about how this was probably the result of her ego. But it got edited out for TV air time.

Seconded. Whoever says that Oprah is a bad businesswoman is an idiot. She's worth 3 billion for a reason. She then made a huge mistake with this, but that doesn't cancel out 25 years of good business.

\Fan of Oprah, I admit it
\\Also admit that OWN was a HUGE mistake on her part and probably a result of ego.

Hi Oprah, I'm gonna need you to sit over there by Howard Stern in the "Failed Second Acts of a Previously Brilliant Career" section, Rush should be by shortly.

2012-03-20 10:46:18 AM
Wow, her network isn't even that old. Oprah sucks anyway.

2012-03-20 10:46:48 AM
OWN has been in trouble for awhile now. Getting rid of Rosie was probably a smart move - she's dead weight, no matter the show format.

2012-03-20 10:52:08 AM
I would say the major problem, not just with OWN but all major networks right now, is the amount of commercials they inject in programming. Roughly 12 minutes out of a 30 minute slot is for commercials. And now they inject little 30, 45 second teasers of fluff in long commercial breaks to keep people from flipping channels. It's literally impossible to watch anything without a DVR.

Now add in how cheap & easy it is to set up a media server, rip all your DVD's to a hard drive and boom, commercial-free access to all your movies and TV shows. Now you don't flip to the TV for reruns, you just flip to the media server. There goes half the revenue right there from commercial injected reruns. The commercials drive away the target audience (who prefer to watch on DVR later to skip the aforementioned commercials) because there are so many of them.

Add in that TV shows compete on a major level with Video Games and also with the other 400 channels out there, and a new network doesn't make much sense.

If Oprah wants to make this network succeed, go back to having two 2 minutes comemrcial breaks every 30 minutes. People would watch the channel just because it DOESN'T have commercials all the time.

Honest Bender: What on Glob's green Earth made you think that, in an era of people demanding the decoupling of cable content from cable stations, you could successfully take your show and couple it to a non-basic cable station?

That's not what she did. She *ended* her talk show, and tried to start a whole new network of shows.

As it turns out, unemployed women just want to watch whatever is on CBS at 4PM, but if she didn't want to do the talk show anymore, and didn't need the paycheck, who can blame her?

2012-03-20 11:02:46 AM
I remember the stories of "WAAAAAH! I can't watch her anymore because I can't afford cable! How could she do this to me???" Simple- she thought enough viewers would follow her to get their daily instructions...oops, advice...on how to function. I guess they didn't.

Her network could do away with commercials completely and just do product placement.

/Ellen is more entertaining than anything on OWN.

I guarantee at some point a TV genius took the ratings numbers of her talk show and assumed they would get those numbers 24/7 on a cable network solely because it had Oprah's name on it.

bought this bad boy a few weeks ago. Hooked up NAS to it, installed two 1.5TB drives in the NAS and moved over all music and movies. Wife streams shows to the Xbox and Roku, me on the Kindle Fire. She loves watching King of Queens without all the commercials.

I love that router too. NAS is so great. Now I just need to rip all the CSI blue rays onto the network.

Pretty sure it's on cable. It replaced Discovery Health. Think it would come with most cable packages.

Oh that looks sweet. I took an old Dell, popped in a 2TB HD, an older video card and hooked it up to the TV ghetto-style. Using a wirelss card in it to stream to the laptop. The first one is just proof of concept to the wife, then when I show how awesome it is I get to put some money in something that actually looks good.

Working on setting up Saturday Morning Cartoons for the kids.

Still playing with best settings to rip movies to HD. Any pointers with Handbrake are more than appreciated.

I'm not that surprised. What did she thing was going to happen?

CSB:

The OWN was (maybe still is) planning on having a show about "real Army wives" at the base my wife is stationed at. They wanted to see how spouses handled the deployment, stuff like that. Someone (thanks whoever you are) gave them my name, e-mail, and phone number, and pointed out that I was a dependent husband. The OWN people went nuts, thought it was the coolest thing ever, it would show how "inclusive" they were. I got called 3 or 4 times, a slew of e-mails, all asking me to get back to them about being on the show. I actually called them back (mostly to tell them to stop annoying me), and answered a few of their questions. Once they found out that we have no kids, I have a decent job, don't sit around biatching about how miserable my life is, and, this is most important, I don't try to sleep with any of the wives back here, they lost interest.

I'm not a fan of Oprah, but there's no way she's a bad businesswoman. She came from some farked-up background and she built an entire empire. Plus she did it while being a black woman, and don't tell me that that doesn't make a difference.

She was over paid for a shiatty talk show. That doesn't make you a good business person. Hell Trump has a shiatload of money but sucks at business, his businesses have gone bankrupt 4 times,. If it wasn't for daddy's money, he'd just be a guy with shiatty hair.

OWN was the straw that broke the camels back for me. I was finding less and less worth watching on cable. Oprah then took over Discovery Health, dropped one of the few shows left on cable that I enjoyed, Dr. G Medical Examiner... so I finally said "Screw this!", and "cut the cord" on cable completely... and I don't miss it... and saving $100/month!

As much as I dislike Oprah (which is a considerable amount), I'm actually disappointed that it wasn't 30 Rock that got cancelled as I initially inferred from the headline. Just a terrible show...

OWN isn't on basic cable, which means shelling out serious money to get it.

And for a 'brilliant' businesswoman, she made the stupid mistake of turning down the soaps when they were cancelled. That alone would have given her a dedicated audience. But NO, let's show Dr Oz instead.

similar to what i have. 4 year old desk top (it was top of the line at the time, so surprising its not obsolete.) put in an HDMI video card, plug it into the TV. and then i never needed cable again.

Okay.
Ellen= $100,000,000 net worth max
Oprah= $3,000,000,000 net worth.

Do the math dude. She did WAY more than just host a talk show. You think it is shiatty, but aparently a lot of people didn't. So, YOU are the idiot that I was talking about in my initial comment.
