I lived in an orange Westfalia VW for 6 months back in 73 while travelling and producing concerts. Not as much fun as you might think.

Right after graduating high school, my best friend and I spent the summer refurbishing a 1964 VW bus. Then when it was all fixed up and roadworthy, we hit the highway. First stop, Rome, GA where a girlfriend of mine was going to college. That's also about as far as we made it before a major mechanical breakdown. Spent about a week or so there with the bus in the shop. Then headed out again. The Carolinas, Blue Ridge Parkway, DC and finally NYC. A couple of long-haired hippies driving through the South. Great road trip all in all, sleeping in the back of the VW most nights. It would have been great to take that trip up PCH.

My first one was like the one you posted, although it was lighter green. It was an Alabama Camper, with a stove, fridge and sink built in in the back along with a bed. We had that one pre-children. Of all the cars I've owned, I wish I had that one back.

Don't you remember, we always talked about how cool it would be to have a van and just drive?

I'd like to think it was because we gals were so fetching

Well we're going to need some evidence for this.

Wow. That brings back some memories. I actually did this for a summer way back when. Right before my senior year in college, A few classmates and I just decided to take off in a friend's van and see what happened. We drove all over the country. It actually turned out to be a lot of fun. Me and my best friend talked two sophomore girls into going with us, together with his huge farking retard of a dog of course. We all smelled awful after about 2 days, but we kept it up.
I'll never forget that time we broke down about a thousand miles outside of Bumfark, Egypt in the middle of the night. It was cold, it was raining, we had nothing to eat, but I could see some lights coming from over a hill. Turns out it was an abandoned theme park that was haunted by pirate-ghosts. Jenkies! that was scary.

One of the 23(?) window versions went for a little over $100,000 at Barrat-Jackson last year. It was pretty, but dayum.

Sure, the Volkswagens are all fun and games, until you need a passenger compartment heating system.

Thank God for global warming.

One of my high school Art teachers did the whole drop everything and road trip. Technically the board forced his hand by cutting the art department, but he sold all of his stuff and hit the sunset to trek through all of the states. Sounded like he started living a great life of wandering soul searching.

Really wish I had the freedom to do that, but responsibility.

I did this In '93 after I got out of the Marines, but it was a 74 Sunbug. Had about 15k saved, hit the road and drove until it burned on the side of the Indian Nation Tollway in Oklahoma. Took my last $70 to pay the wrecker to haul it away.

1979 cars are vintage now?

I feel old.

2012-03-20 06:24:35 AM
My buddy had an old VW bus, with the bigger engine and everything. We decided that a chevy van of the same vintage was categorically pretty much the same or better. The VW's are completely gutless, and the air cooled engines made for crappy heating. Get a Chevy with a small block 350 in there, and they actually are pretty fast. The mileage wasn't much different because the air-cooled 4 in the VW was beating the shiat out of itself every time you wanted to merge onto the highway or climb a hill. I guess the only advantage of a VW is that people see you as a hippy, where in a 70's van people pretty much figure you are a pederast.

I wonder if that is the panhandler with the same sign from Anchorage. I was out with a friend and he thought it was so awesome that he had to go over and give the guy $5 and get a picture taken with him

It's a tactic. It's like "39 cents short of a taco" or "will work for food". You see it on lots of signs nowadays.

Yea I figured as much, I wouldn't be surprised if it was him though. Talk to anyone in AK and one of the only other places they've been to in the states is CA or they dream of going there if they have never been outside AK.

I drove a 72' Beetle all through high school and college.

I used to have a subscription to Hot VW's magazine.

They made one thing abundantly clear in that magazine every month. The more windows the VW bus has, the more valuable it is.

I think the bus that came stock with 21 windows was the most valuable.

If anyone here remembers The Brunching Shuttlecocks, then you should know that this is what its creator, Lore Sjoberg, is doing. Except instead of a vintage VW ban, it's a Ford with blacked-out windows.

Marcus Aurelius: Sure, the Volkswagens are all fun and games, until you need a passenger compartment heating system.

Unless your wrenching skills (or your mechanic's) suck, there's plenty of heat available for warming a VW's interior compartment. In fact, the heater on an air cooled engine warms faster than on a liquid cooled engine.
