Sumo Surfer: The mandated waiting period is a good idea and I see nothing wrong with it. That being said, It'll be interesting to see how the erroneous abortion/breast cancer provision can withstand legal challenges with so many health organizations' research showing no such direct link.

Wait times are an awful idea. Abortion providers are not always near women who need abortions, so you get situations where a woman has to travel a long distance, taking time off work, to get an abortion. Waiting periods mean that either the woman must get a ride twice to the same provider (an iffy proposition for someone without a car) or she must stay in a hotel overnight (which may not be financially possible). At the very least it means taking an extra day off work, again, something which is a financial hardship for many poor women. It's also insulting, as it implies that women are somehow not capable of making wise decisions in their life. Wait times are all about making it too difficult for poor women to have abortions (middle-class and wealthy women, of course, will never lack abortion care).

Well thank god. I was starting to worry that the way OWS got roughed up had scared everyone into passivity.

Really, women need to start writing letters and hitting the streets hard over this shiat.

In fact, for each year that a woman's first full-term pregnancy is delayed, her risk of breast cancer rises 3.5 percent.

If you see "nothing wrong with it," then you're not looking very hard. If you bothered, you might notice that your "good idea" is a murkier bit of business than you presume.

Wait until they find out that a womans lifespan is extended a year per abortion, and her boobs grow bigger and firmer, her stomach becomes flatter
and her ass gets a perfect shape... Just wait!

Just curious, does New Hampshire have a mandatory waiting period to obtain a firearm? Cause that'd be funny if its easier to get a gun, than an abortion there.

I would have thought requiring a $200 tax stamp, background check, and a note of approval from the local police commissioner would also be reasonable. Maybe we should force them to take courses on the subject and pass a skill test.

...Oooh, right. We're talking about taking a human life through abortion, not gun sales.
No paperwork and no limits then. Fire up the falcon-punch machine!

Why is the waiting period a good idea? Do you suppose a lot of pregnancies are terminated within the first 24 hours of knowing they exist?

And if a woman decides that quickly to get an abortion, what kind of life do you suppose that kid will have.

This is a bad idea from the party of bad ideas.

Welfare and soup kitchens?

Pish Posh... If the GOP had their way, those things would be done away with because helping the poor and down trodden only hurts them.

Now for-profit prisons and tighter drug and abortion laws... That's something the GOP (and the for-profit prison industry lobbyists who will be writing the laws) can get behind.

Is the mandated wait time from when the woman finds out she is pregnant or from the first time she goes to have the procedure done?

Most women have already thought long and hard about the abortion before going to get an abortion, so what is another day going to do? Do you want to wait a day to get your antibiotics from the doctor? The farkers who complain about having to go to the doctor to refill their prescriptions are they also against this?

And this
It is also undisputed that the earlier a woman has a first full-term pregnancy, the lower her risk of breast cancer becomesIn fact, for each year that a woman's first full-term pregnancy is delayed, her risk of breast cancer rises 3.5 percent.

So are we going to lower the age of consent to protect the boobies?

It just means women better go back to having babies from the age 13 and onward . . . ya know, to protect them from cancer.

So next time I fark a 13 year old, I'll just tell her enraged father . . . and the cops . . . that I'm just concerned for her welfare.

the people pretending to be christian that currently run the GOP certainly like being ignorant and oppressing people.

lets be honest - a lot of the evangelicals currently infesting the politics in this country today aren't very christian. i'm not even sure they worship Christ at all. But they're very good at pretending to worship Christ, and they like to shout a lot about how Christ like blood, and money and total control over every aspect of our lives.

After reading the Laundry series, I'm convinced they really worship Nyarlathotep.

Liberals believe middle class intellectuals know best what is good for mankind (WRONG), that they are acting through altruism, not self-interest (WRONG) and that morality is defined by what feels fair(WRONG). Liberals conclude that anyone who disagrees with them must be right-wing (WRONG) and that anyone who disagrees strongly must be a fascist (WRONG). They claim that the holocaust was the only major human atrocitiy of the 20th century (WRONG). They think that if there is any wealth inequality, it helps to tax the difference and spend it treating the symptoms of society's ills (WRONG). They think that if there is only one of something, like the panet, then they alone should control how it is used (WRONG) and that if anybody acts selfishly, or foolishly, the world gets better when you take away their freedom (WRONG).

A lot of so-called conservatives today don't know what the word means. They think I've turned liberal because I believe a woman has a right to an abortion. That's a decision that's up to the pregnant woman, not up to the pope or some do-gooders or the religious right. It's not a conservative issue at all. -- Barry Goldwater

We cannot survive as a free nation when some men decide that others are not fit to live and should be abandoned to abortion or infanticide. My Administration is dedicated to the preservation of America as a free land, and there is no cause more important for preserving that freedom than affirming the transcendent right to life of all human beings, the right without which no other rights have any meaning. -- Ronald Reagan

Bunch of kooks. -- Barry Goldwater again
