My mother asked me if I was going to get a new iPad. I have the first gen iPad without a camera or 3g. It does everything I want it to so I told her "no".

I just don't understand the fuss. It doesn't even play flash for goodness sake.

If your iPad 1 works for you and you have no desire for the new stuff like the new screen and much faster processor and graphics (compared to the first iPad) then of course... no reason to upgrade.

Flash is garbage and a cancer on the Internet.... and its going away. Even Adobe officially announced the end of Flash development for mobile platforms. 95% or better of the websites worth their salt have moved embedded video over to HTML5. Heck I even run an extension to block flash content on my computer.

It's not going away fast enough. I have to walk all the way down the hall to my office to watch video clips...dammit.

I just use the ipad to browse the internet while I watch TV.

I was in an Apple store the other day to get an iRig (pretty cool, actually) and there were four cops standing outside. Like actual cops with Glocks and shiat. They were just standing around talking of course because what can you steal from and Apple store. I think one of them was texting. I stopped and thanked them for protecting me. One of them looked like he was going to taser me so I got the hell out of there.

I believe you and realize that wasn't the point of the story. It's just that after reading your comment I couldn't think about anything but that image and needed to post it to get it out of my system.

What's even crazier is, according to AppleInsider, this number likely is only actual sales, and does not include preorders.

Just got a blackberry playbook the other day for an open-box price of $150. With OS 2 on it, it works pretty well and I chose it because it fits into most larger pockets. 10 inch Ipads and droids need a bag that's just as big as my laptop uses so I don't see them as a more portable alternative, therefore kind of pointless.
If apple ever does a 7 inch, Ill be very interested, but then again, they'll probably want $400 for it.

From your link:
⅔ of the market is already supporting HTML5. That being said, Flash is not obsolete. On the desktop, Internet Explorer 6/7/8 make up a large pecentage of the market share (28%), and are here to stay for at least a few more years. Since IE 6/7/8 do not support HTML5, alternatives like Flash remain critical for video playback. As for the other browsers, they already sufficiently support HTML5 video.
Written like someone who has never heard of Google Chrome Frame. To use it, a web developer need only add one Meta tag to the Head area of HTML pages on the site. The user does need to install it once, but that's no more onerous that installing Flash Player the first time.

From then on, whenever viewing any page with that metatag, while their browser (user interface) is still WinIE, the rendering engine is Google Chrome's Webkit, and has all of the modern HTML5 and CSS3 and other standards-compliant goodness of Webkit.

If you've ever used the IE Tab Add-On for Firefox or Google Chrome, think of this as like that in reverse, only automatic. It's only activated when a web developer specifically requests it via the meta tag, and so would never activate for a site designed for WinIE's Trident engine or ActiveX technology (e.g. Windows Update, Microsoft Update, some outdated corporate intranet sites, etc.). All the user knows is now sites that didn't look good nor work properly in their outdated browser now work just fine.

As for the web developer, s/he can just code for standards-compliant modern browsers and add in that metatag instead of having to code hacks and conditional comments loading IE-specific .CSS files and such to get around IE's standards-noncompliance.

Not really a fair comparison to refer to your "$99" Touchpad as if that implies the iPad is $400 too expensive. But regardless, I'm cool with folks who are happy with whatever they own. After all, nobody buys the 2012 Camry just because they had the 2011 and now there's a new one, so I don't know why the media makes such a big deal about whether people are adopting the new model.

That said - I bought an iPad 1 and loved it. Traded it for a Galaxy Tab 10.1 because I was fed up with some of Apple's policies and closed hardware. Hated it for the last 6 months or so until I caved and bought the iPad 3. And now I love it again. The Android phones are great, but none of the competing tablets are even half of the iPad in my opinion.

My wife ordered one, but she skipped the iPad 2 and is going straight from an original model to the new one, so for her it is actually a pretty worthwhile upgrade.

Who the hell just throws away their old Apple products? You either sell them or you repurpose them. An old iPhone turns into an iPod Touch when you remove the SIM, and my 7 year old iPod that barely holds a charge found a great new home living in my car plugged up to a charger all the time.

Apple products tend to hold their value well enough to make it worth trying to resell them. Hell, you'll even see people selling old PPC Macs on Craigslist still. I'd say most Apple products tend to have a longer service life than most consumer electronic devices.

Flash isn't going anywhere. The reason why, is because HTML is a shiatty open standard that stifles innovation and progress.

So HTML5 has an integrated video player? Oh gee farking whiz. That would have been nice to have 12 years ago, when video was taking off. See, flash will continue doing what Flash has always done; being 12 years ahead of HTML; filling in the gaps created by the W3C's glacially slow development of HTML standards, and the browsers manufacturers chronic lack of rendering consistency and reliance on proprietary solutions.

There is SimCity on iPad (and Civ and Settlers II) and they are a great amount of fun. Hell - they even have the old "Ascendency" - a space civ game which came out after MOO2 in the 90's (and it looks like a direct port as it's a bit raw but a lot of fun).

Hell you can play minecraft on iPad.

I will never forgive Apple for killing Silverlight. Javascript and its mutant variant Actionscript are some of the most awful languages on the planet and I detest programming anything on the web with them because you simply cannot design properly architected software with those crappy languages. Microsoft explodes onto the scene with a layout system that actually works (WPF) and a proper language that isn't some retarded hack (C#), and I finally start liking web development. Then Apple decides to be absolute shiatheads and refuses to support it. Now everything is going to HTML5 and I'm stuck fighting this dreadful javashiat language again. Unbelievable.

Mechanically/electrically, they don't. However, the fact that it is an Apple product is what preserves its value. It's more of a societal "service life."

I wish that all electronic devices could be charged and synched via a USB mini connector. It would make things much simpler.

But since you can get USB cables with the Apple 30-pin connector for pennies, and they give you one with every iThing you buy, I don't have a problem with it.
