The article also missed that Fox has .18 (Federal) as a bigger chunk of the graph than either .23 (State) or .30 (State and Local).

Gecko Gingrich: The article also missed that Fox has .18 (Federal) as a bigger chunk of the graph than either .23 (State) or .30 (State and Local).

Boy, that's really boneheaded all around.

I will admit, looking at that briefly, I would probably not have caught it.

2012-03-19 01:56:15 PM
To be fair - nothing on Fox News is intended to be a factual statement.

2012-03-19 02:05:59 PM
Bah, this is a media matters link. We all know there is nothing true about what they say. Hell, I bet they created the whole misleading graphic themselves, then surreptitiously placed it on Fox. They are just that devious.

Also it looks like .18+.23+.30 is only slightly less than $3.83.

DAMN YOU GAS MATH!

2012-03-19 02:28:39 PM
Whatever. My gut tells me 99 cents out of every dollar spent at the pump goes directly to fund Obama's corrupt buddies at Solyndra. I plan on voting accordingly.

Today:

U.S. crude oil imports during 2011 fell to their lowest level in twelve years and were down 12% from their peak in 2005, as higher domestic oil production reduced American refiners' purchases of foreign crude. Link (new window)

The smaller list is what is intended to be factual.

cloudfront.mediamatters.org

There are an awful lot of countries missing from this graph.

2012-03-19 03:04:45 PM
This should be no surprise. An appreciation of basic math would be required to get things right.

Actually, Fox News probably doesn't have much vetting of its facts and figures and depends too much on mass comm majors from Bob Jones University to make up stuff.

Gas prices up 7% in Germany!!!

This is obviously due to Obama not allowing a Canadian Company to build a pipe line to the Gulf of Mexico to sell sell oil to the Chinese...

Thanks for keeping me informed Steve, Gretchen and Brian!

God damned taxes... why don't we pay nothin' to them revenuers and have ourselves a libertarian paradise (new window).

2012-03-19 03:54:22 PM
To be fair, Fox never said they would keep you informed:

2012-03-19 04:05:51 PM
So, if Fox is to be taken at it's word, and 20% of the cost is taxes, what about the 14% that is speculative leveraging? Or is that a "bootstrap subsidy" to pay to the Job Creators?

Statistics and graphs are designed to convince, not to teach

2012-03-19 04:07:27 PM
Pretty sure the people who own the republicans don't mind the regressive nature of the gasoline tax. This graph was the work of an overzelous derper.

2012-03-19 04:08:47 PM
Why did they do this? To make viewers pissed off at states? Don't they usually hate on the federal government?

oldfarthenry: To be fair - nothing on Fox News is intended to be a factual statement.

Well, Ailes did say he would fire people for making such mistakes.

I wonder which analyst got tossed out for this one.

//Oh right, no one is getting fired over these errors, despite promises lessen them.

2012-03-19 04:11:59 PM
This contradicts my aunt's email FW:FW:FW:RE:fw:RE:fw:FW that CLEARLY explains that Obama is using the secret gas price dial in his desk to personally raise prices across the nation and 98 cents out of every dollar gasoline costs per gallon more than it did when Reagan was president goes DIRECTLY to building FEMA camps where we'll all be forced into mandatory gay marriages where the bouquets are made up of aborted fetuses and the post-ceremony confetti will be shredded Bibles.

2012-03-19 04:12:36 PM
I'm guessing 100% of Fox's viewers will never vote for Obama, no matter what the facts may be.

Huh.

It's almost as if domestic oil production has little to no impact on the price we pay for refined gasoline...

Weird.

I'd like to thank FOX News Channel for making it possible for me to use the term "Orwellian" much more than I thought I ever would.

Can't wait to see how the right spins this one, my guess is shoot the messenger.

Non-issue. Overzealous graphic.

Geez. They're entertainers! That's why it's called Fox News!

Not a conspiracy. Guy who makes the graphics just sucks horribly at his job, can't do basic math, can't fact-check his numbers and thinks that resizing the stacked bar graph so that his numbers fit inside is totally fine.

In his defense, he probably just assumed that Fox News viewers would be too dumb to notice.

2012-03-19 04:24:30 PM
I'm wondering if FAUX NEWS deliberately hires the handicapped to produce their computer graphics. Their people can't even count to potato.

Britney Spear's Speculum: Why did they do this? To make viewers pissed off at states? Don't they usually hate on the federal government?

Because one of the three Republican talking points says "Beat up Obama on the rising price of gas", as Steve Doucey read to us on air.

Well, accurate math at any rate.

I do believe it's true when Newt says he will lower the gas price down to two fiddy. Using the same methods GWB did. A little economic collapse is totally worth saving a few bucks a week on gas.

That's not quite true. My best friend watches FOX News, and he will likely be voting for Obama (again). He also voted for Bush twice, and for Clinton twice. He's a bit odd.

First the libs are all like "OMG ADA! EE!" and then libs are all like "HAHA YOU HIRED 'TARDS!" Farking make up your mind.

It's clearly part of the vast left-wing media conspiracy to continually discredit the right. There it is, just sitting there, being inflamed by the media, and people are going to trust Fox News less because of it, which, by removing the only fair and balanced perspective, just veers the political discourse further to the left off that cliff that is liberalism.

This is the kind of issue that plagued Greece before the true lefty-leftards came to power and destroyed their economy. Turns out, when all you've got to export is the ingredients to a reasonable salad and a bunch of heathen animal-raping gods, you really need to make good on the promise of salad. And that's exactly what the Demorats in charge didn't choose.

The Republicans want to deliver a salad--something real, something produced by real work. The Demorat Party just wants to make wishes to a bunch of non-existent deities and get something for nothing with a side of bestiality.

Now, as we approach voting season, folks, I ask you this: do you really want to be Greecey?

How well does the salad compliment my insatiable appetite for animal-raping?

To be fair, I am sure the left did something similar on CNN or the other liberal media msm. Granted, I dont have any facts to back up my claim, and I made my claim very vague and devoid of any context, and I really spent the post getting angrier at what I think may or may not happened instead of what actually happened while deflecting to claim that both sides are bad in order to excuse Fox, but I FEEL it in my gut to be true that CNN did this, so that makes it ok that Fox did!

Can't viewers sue news providers who lie to them under some sort of common law assumed ability or fitness to perform the task it was designed to perform?

If I buy a lawn mower and it can't cut grass...

As The Economist has noted, our relatively tiny gas taxes are one reason we're so vulnerable to price spikes
