LeglessDog: OOOOooooo . . . . a Rolling Stone political commentary . . . . I'm sure this is a purely unbiased and objective opinion . . . .

You're right, it's just another example of leftist trolling. It should be simple for you to go through and tear it to shreds. And... GO!

"The greatest evil is not now done in those sordid "dens of crime" that Dickens loved to paint. It is not done even in concentration camps and labour camps. In those we see its final result. But it is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice."

/quote is from C.S. Lewis, came across it a few days ago, knew I would have a use for it soon

hammettman: Shostie: Nabb1: EatHam: Nabb1: How many people even have torches and pitchforks handy, anyway?

I have a pitchfork, and some tiki torches. I only have one pitchfork, but I could share the tiki torches. They are even filled with citronella, so our mob will be mosquito free.

Mosquito free is good. Tiki torches are a good idea. My wife bought some cups that look like coconuts and we have those little paper umbrellas. We're going to need some rum.

And this is how an angry mob degenerates into a drunken luau.

Really. BofA just has to surround their HQ with tables offering Mai Tais and pineapple slices and the whole thing goes to hell. The same people who said before the assault "I've got a pitchfork" will soon be saying "I've got a pig, who's got a spit?"

HotIgneous Intruder: I can't advocate the hunting down and killing of bankers and the politicians who enable them, but if I did advocate such things, I would certainly advocate the hunting down and killing of bankers and the politicians who enable them.

You need to eliminate all the next-of-kin first to prevent the stolen wealth from being passed down.

/Of course I'm not advocating that either, that would be terrible.

FTA: Take your eyes off them for 10 seconds and guaranteed, they'll be into some shiat again: This bank is like the world's worst-behaved teenager, taking your car and running over kittens and fire hydrants on the way to Vegas for the weekend, maxing out your credit cards in the three days you spend at your aunt's funeral.

I generally always enjoy a piece written by Taibbi.

You're the jerk... jerk: Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the CRA default rate pretty high (8-9%)? Isn't it just the small number of CRA loans compared to all other sub-primes (which also default at 8-9%) and the fact they were packaged less often that limited their effect on the melt down?

Nope, you're exactly correct. I should have said as a percentage of all the bad loans, they don't make up a large enough group to say "THEY DID IT!" The default rate is high for both groups, but the private market sub prime was the bulk of the defaults.

Instead of focusing on this, the candidates are talking about BS like abortion. How many more abortions you think you're going to see when people can't buy bread?

CSB time...

TFA mentions First Union Bank that later became Wachovia. My brother-in-law was a loan officer at First Union before and during that merger. He revealed to me that First Union was far larger than the little mining bank Wachovia, and had no need of its assets or market. The merger was done SOLELY to acquire Wachovia's good name.

You see, First Union had, and still has, a toxic corporate culture that oozes down from the CEO's office via his choices of VP. That culture eventually began to alienate large numbers of customers, and so a name change was judged cheaper than rebooting the culture by firing all of upper management and the board too. So they bought up a beloved little bank with a sterling reputation.

You know what eventually happened to Wachovia. That was because it was really the rotten old First Union, hidden inside Wachovia's clothing.

You see something similar today with Comcast rebranding themselves Xfinity.

Ishkur: Debeo Summa Credo: When did I say it was ALL the homeowners' fault? My position has consistently been that the mortgage crisis was the result of a bubble that numerous parties bought into. Fed, banks, investors, rating agencies, financial guarantors, homebuyers, borrowers, Fannie and freddie, etc.

You're still trotting out this stupid line, eh? ....after I soundly thrashed it time and again in countless previous threads? Well, at least you didn't say Barney Frank or the CRA or any other stupid libertarian excuse/distractions did it.

So allow me to correct you again. ***snip****

If you add in the ratings agencies not doing due diligence and rating CDOs that were not worth the paper the contracts were printed on as AAA so that institutional investors could buy them as the keystone, then you have perfectly illustrated what allowed the collapse to be so catastrophic.

IMO, CRA's (or more appropriately, the shift in the business model for the medium/larger agencies) was the catalyst for all for this whole debacle. These agencies were paradigms for the self-policing institutions which supposedly occur in the natural makeup of the market place, but as soon as they realized that the subscriber-based pay structure was "antiquated," all semblance of legitimacy was chucked out the window.

In short: piss up a rope, Greenspan. Your bullshiat "increase competition" rhetoric was so goddamn short-sighted that it blows my goddamn mind that people still hang their hat on such nonsensical soundbites.

NewportBarGuy: Truth is, we have to consolidate banking like we have. At least on a national level. However, we need them to act responsibly, and we have to regulate them like a hawk with agencies that have teeth to make them hurt when they f*ck up. There are still small banks, credit unions and the like, but the national behemoths will continue to gobble them up until only a few are left.

Agreed, consolidation is a good thing. And US banks really aren't that big. The US is 14 times the size of Australia, but your 4 big banks are only twice the size of ours. Canada is 1/9th the size of the US, but the big banks there are only 1/3 the size of the big US ones. Taking into account country size, your banks are really kind of puny. Link (new window)

The US has a highly-populated pool filled with small to medium size fish, all in a competitive frenzy to eat each other in order to grow large enough to be "safe" from the other predators. Canada and Oz have a lower density pool, with a few shark-size banks (that are highly regulated and must ask permission to eat anything) and some minnows that are allowed to compete freely, but don't cause much disruption because they're so small. The second system is much more stable. The trade-off is that you lose some competition/innovation, but for the general public, financial stability is more important than innovation.
