(Politico)   Sen. Marco Rubio's (R-FL) memoir, "An American Son," will now be published on June 19 instead of in October, as previously planned. Why ever would he do such a thing?   (politico.com) divider line 136

NeoCortex42: Brokenseas:
I think the reason for the continued embargo is less to bring about the fall of the Communist Party in Cuba than to blunt the effectiveness of their rule. If Cuban-style socialism succeeded, then the rest of Latin America may tell Chiquita and Dole and the other multinational corporations to get stuffed and implement similar policies.

For example: Cuba is a poor third-world country. But there isn't the huge income inequality like in the rest of Latin America. My friends and I feel much more safe walking the streets in Cuba than in Mexico. They have universal education up to high school and free university education for any Cuban who can pass the entrance exams. They are poor but there isn't the desperation and street crime that third-world poverty elsewhere causes.

If the embargo was lifted, Cuba would become richer. They could sell their delicious rum in America, and export their ci ...

I hadn't considered that angle. That at least makes some logical sense.

Worked for China.

factoryconnection: browneye: Who?

Seriously? There are only 100 senators in the federal government. 100 people (plus the president) that can single-handedly STOP the government from functioning in this whole country, and you say "who?" The strange things I read on this site.

Yes, but on a national stage, the guy still hasn't done crap. He's not the great tan hope, he's a GOP back bencher and to suppose that he's going to be a knock out blow to Obama is stupid.

I hate how a lot of conservative Cuban Americans are so hawkish on immigration considering that they largely benefit from a policy that skips them to the head of the pack for landing on the shores illegally and they get expedited legal resident status and citizenship.

Meanwhile, guys like me had to wait nearly 20 years to get his citizenship. Was the country I come from just not communist enough for the US government to show me such preferential treatment, or what?

I'd bet most of the people in the politics tab - people who follow politics - couldn't name all 100 senators.

A-Rth-Urp-Hil-Ipdenu: ABQGOD: vernonFL: "Un Hijo Americano."

That is interesting, since while most people in the USA think that we are the only "Americans", most everyone else would say "NorteAmericanos" or "EstadoUnidense" to mean "USA American"

"Un hijo Americano" doesn't really mean "a son of the USA", it means "a son of America (the continent, not the country)

/Then again, its been awhile since I've taken 11th grade Spanish, so I could be wrong.

"Un hijo Americano" means "An American son." "A son of America" would be "Un hijo de America" - subtle semantic difference, but I think it matters.

It doesn't, really. It is semantically different but it makes no difference in practice. For a great deal of Latin American countries (full disclosure: personal experience limited to Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Colombia, Peru, Chile and Brazil which is a wee bit different but bear with me) "America" is used to refer to the continent. Uses of "Americas" are generally restricted to literary contexts (poetry, songs, etc). If you ask any Latin American which continent s/he lives in they will almost certainly answer "America", not "Latin America" or "Central America" or "South America".

"Americans" used to be formally referred to as "Estadounidenses". I've observed a shift from that to "Americanos" in the last 10 or so years (I'm in my late twenties so grain of salt and all that) mostly, I think, from the number of migrants travelling back to their home countries after years living in the US. Mainstream Media seems to contribute as well. You wouldn't believe the amount of US media consumed all over the place.

/been in Mexico since '09

Right, I agree with all that. I'm not debating the definition or usage of "America" or "American". I was just correcting vernonFL's "11th grade Spanish" by pointing out that the word "de" needs to be there for it to be "son of". The terms "An American son" and "A son of America" have subtly different translations.

Hey! That's pretty good! There's usually about 15 of 'em to house!

Rubio has a Birth Certificate/Eligibility problem....his parents weren't US citizens when he was born....he cannot be a Pres or VP as he is not natural born

Jairzinho: vpb: If you say "Estadounidense" to the average Mexican they will look at you like you have two heads.

Besides, the actual name of the country called Mexico is "Los Estados Unidos Mexicanos". Any Mexican can claim to be from the United States and it will be literally true. They are from the United Mexican States.

"Estadounidense" is also commonly used in Latin America. It's easily found in formal speech as the term for U.S. nationality or origin in press and TV, Even in Spanish-language TV in the U.S.

BTW, Mexico =/= Latin America.

That's odd, do you think Mexico is not latin or not in the Americas?

Fairly certain he's a natural born citizen, since he was born in Florida.

There is nothing to go "birther" about.

I'd be more concerned with the the GOP base having to choose between not voting and the Mormon/Hispanic candidate.

Headso: Don't Cubans ride here over on rafts and get to stay and Mexicans that do the same thing are called illegals by those same Cubans? Not sure that Rubio is going to lock up the Hispanic vote like the GOPers think.

Yup. The average Messican has it worse than the average Cuban, but Cuban illegals are welcomed by the GOP with open arms, while the poor Messicans are kicked to the curb.

Rubio is just another token minority in the GOP.

The same birthers that are targeting Obama are targeting Rubio. And since I'm fairly sure that the birthers aren't Democrats...

Cubans have nothing in common with other Hispanics. Cubans feel the others are "inferior" for some reason. And, generally, Mexicans hate them right back.

Even in Miami, the Cuban voting block isn't safe as other nationalities move into Miami who tend to vote Democrat more than Republican. It's to the point that the GOP had to gerrymander South Florida like crazy to protect their strong Cuban-American GOP voting districts.

At least they are consistent.

Although, I'm sure that they figured out if they acknowledge Rubio is natural born, then so is Obama.

I demand to see his birth certificate and then demand its authenticity debated for no less than a half a decade with the efforts headed up by a crazy woman and a power hungry sheriff.

Because the GOP tends to hate the gays?

I can understand Latinos being conservative because they do tend to have conservative beliefs. Too bad the GOP is pissing that potential away.

But what's really baffling is when a homosexual supports the GOP.

How can you support a political party who believes that you should be treated like a second class citizen? I can understand being a fiscal conservative but it is still baffling to me.

NeoCortex42: That makes a lot of sense, but I'm curious what their actual justification of it is. Do they think the embargo will eventually get the government to say "okay, now we'll be democratic" and it's only a matter of time before it works? I just never really understood the logic of having the embargo in effect all this time.

Cuba was once a vacation destination with wealthy landowners and dirt poor peons.
The Cuban revolution occurred because of this economic disparity. In other words, class warfare.
The wealthy landowners fled to America (mostly Florida) and began lobbying the American government.
The embargo was their attempt to regain the land and property seized by the revolutionaries.
And to punish the remaining Cubans for their cooperation with the rebels.

No. I don't think that. Of course they are in Latin America. "Mexico" and "Latin America" just cannot be used interchangeably as you apparently did or implied. Why?

Mexico ⊂ Latin America is true. Mexico = Latin America is false.

I almost forgot...I don't remember experiencing that in Mexico (at least in Mexico City where I've been). Also, if you say in South America "Hola, yo vengo de América" (Hello, I come from America) you'd sound as silly as someone here saying to you "Hello, I come from Earth".
